Various Artists - Bossa 12 Vezes (1965)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 03 de janeiro 2007.

Here is another cool record sent by Caetano Rodrigues to Loronixers, Bossa 12 Vezes (1965), for Farroupilha, mixing four different artists - really different - on a single LP, featuring, Jongo Trio, Leny Eversong, Conjunto Farroupilha and Bobby Mackay (completely unknown to zecalouro). Refer, if you can assist us on Bobby Mackay, we appreciate.

Have you ever stop to think how many good records were released in 1965? What a year! I like statistics and I think that it would be very interest if someone makes to Loronixers some kind of Loronix albums per year chart. I'm quite sure that we will see 1965 taking the lead over the other years.

Tracks include:

01 - A Resposta (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle) - Conjunto Farroupilhas
02 - Aleluia (Edu Lobo / Ruy Guerra) - Leny Eversong
03 - Seu Chopin Desculpe (Johnny Alf) - Jongo Trio
04 - Bossa Nova (I Say) (B. Mackay / J. Bradford) - Bobby Mackay
05 - Samba Internacional (Sidney Morais) - Conjunto Farroupilhas
06 - Arrastão (Edu Lobo / Vinicius de Moraes) - Leny Eversong
07 - Ela Vai Ela Vem (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli) - Jongo Trio
08 - Cool Cool Samba (J. Bradford / R. Simpson) - Bobby Mackay
09 - Rio Rio (Francisco de Assis Bezerra de Menezes) - Conjunto Farroupilhas
10 - Gangazuma (Carlos Cruz / Almeida Rego) - Leny Eversong
11 - Garota Moderna (Evaldo Gouveia / Jair Amorim) - Jongo Trio
12 - The Girl From Sout Zone (Balanço Zona Sul) (Tito Madi / Vrs. B. Mackay / Vrs. D. Gordon) - Bobby Mackay

Obrigado.
Gostou da bolacha?
Abraços, zeca

Zeca,
Assim, o rubor me queima a cara e a vaidade pulsa...
Quem sabe, exista algum material gravado disso... (?)

Hello, Good Evening! There is a great excitement around a vinyl fair in Sao Paulo scheduled for tomorrow. I will spread my wings and fly away there just to check with Caetano what is new. Actually, we will really check what is old, what is new does not apply to this business. It will be amazing to meet Loronixers, I will be with Caetano, so it will be easy to realize who is zeca, otherwise, look for a green guy, naked, 15cm tall and barefoot with four fingers, two in the front and two in the back. That's zeca. I'm tired today and I need to start easy and great.

This is Varios Artistas - Hits da Bossa Nova - Nr. 3 (1964), for Philips. We had already a very successful Hits da Bossa Nova Philips compilation at Loronix, Number 1 was very well received by Loronixers. Thanks Cesar Saldanha for sending Nr. 3, featuring Jorge Ben, Tamba Trio, Os Cariocas, Bossa Rio and Sergio Mendes, Luiz Henrique and Meirelles e Os Copa 5.

Tracks include:

01 - Pula Baú with Jorge Ben "Jorge Benjor"
02 - Sonho de Maria with Tamba Trio
03 - Telefone with Os Cariocas
04 - Nanã with Bossa Rio / Sergio Mendes
05 - Vou Andar Por Aí with Luiz Henrique
06 - Vamos Embora (Uáu) with Jorge Ben "Jorge Benjor"
07 - Tristeza de Nós Dois with Tamba Trio
08 - Chove Chuva with Jorge Ben "Jorge Benjor"

Cinco Estrelas – Interpretam a Bossa Nova (1963)

Publicado no Loronix em: Wednesday, March 21, 2007

Interpretes:

Carminha Mascarenhas
Elizeth Cardoso
Lucienne Franco
Marisa (Gata Mansa)
Morgana

Taking the advantage of the enormous success and feedback given to Caetano’s last RGE compilation O Melhor da Bossa, I will pick another one sent by the same and tireless Caetano Rodrigues. Now we go with ten Bossa Nova interpretations by 5 Brazilian female singers.

Let’s see.

This is Cinco Estrelas Interpretam a Bossa Nova (1963), for Copacabana, featuring Elizeth Cardoso, Marisa, Carminha Mascarenhas, Morgana and Lucienne Franco. Perhaps I’m wrong, Copacabana label did not release much records like this, since this is the first Copacabana compilation I have seen so far. Anyway, really a nice treat to hear the ladies singing Bossa Nova and also hear for the first time the voice of Carminha Mascarenhas, never released before at Loronix. I don’t need to say that this is a really hard to find album provided by Caetano Rodrigues.

Tracks include:

01 – Menino Travesso (Moacir Santos / Vinicius de Moraes) - Elizeth Cardoso
02 – Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini) - Marisa
03 – Ciúme Teu Ma (Walter / Joluz) - Carminhas Mascarenhas
04 – A Flor (Vera Brasil / De Rosa) - Morgana
05 – Da Rosa Que Nasceu Nosso Amor (Baden Powell / Heloísa Setta) - Lucienne Franco
06 – Céu e Mar (Johnny Alf) - Marisa
07 – Imenso Amor (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo) - Lucienne Franco
08 – Cravo Vermelho (Pernambuco / Sergio Malta) - Morgana
09 – Nós e o Mar (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli) - Carminha Mascarenhas
10 – Seu Olhar (Laís Antunes) - Elizeth Cardoso

Varios Artistas – Introdução (1965)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 23 de abril 2008.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Hello, good evening! There is a curiosity behind this post and this album, I will tell you.

This is a contribution made in December 2006 by our great friend Caetano Rodrigues and at that time, I could not understand what was behind this album, except the concept of presenting new artists, which is quite clear through the title, Introducao. However, I did not understand the reason of the phrase “Teenager Series” in the lower right.

We received this week the visit of Juliana Mingotti, who said to be looking for this album for a couple of years. Juliana is the daughter of Wagner Mingotti, author of the first track and pianist of Wan Trio, participating also at the second track as bassist. Wan Trio is the best this album has to offer, recorded by Wagner Mingotti when he was sixteen and probably, all others are below eighteen.

In a quick search, I could realize that Silvinha was the participant that could develop a solid career and according with Juliana, Wagner Mingotti decided to terminate his artistic career after recording this album, which is again available for everyone to know the work of Wagner and all artists at this session. I am keeping the original text, with some modifications.
Let’s see.

This is Introducao (1965), for Mocambo, a unique opportunity to listen for the fist time several artists that we never heard before, such as: Wan Trio – Bossa Jazz, Patricia – Singer, Impulso 4 – Bossa Jazz (this one everybody knows), Tony Carbonell – Instrumental, Quinteto Berimbossa – Bossa Jazz, Joao Paulo – Singer, Silvinha – Singer, Octons – Instrumental and Ezequiel – Singer. Most of these artists were probably not successful on their careers and this is what makes this LP a very interesting piece.

Tracks include:

01 – Selvagem (Wagner Mingotti) – Wan Trio
02 – Onde Está Você (Oscar Castro Neves) – Patrícia
03 – Morte de Um Deus de Sal (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli) – Impulso 4
04 – Desarmonia (Tony Carbonell) – Tony Carbonell
05 – Blues Walk (C. Brown) – Quinteto Berimbossa
06 – História de Duas Crianças (Tony Carbonell / Hernesto Domingues) – João Paulo
07 – Maria Moita (Carlos Lyra) – Silvinha
08 – Tokio’s Blue (H. Silver) – Octons
09 – Paz e Amor (Ezequiel Silva / João Magalhães) – Ezequiel
10 – A Felicidade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) – Quinteto Berimbossa

Varios Artistas – Festival da Bossa Nova (1963)

Bonus: Arquivo em FLAC.

I have been monitor price and availability of this album since the very first beginning of Loronix. Perhaps this amazing cover artwork has called my attention to this record. I never had the chance to find it by a price I could afford at on-line auction sites and never had the chance to take it on my hands to understand what kind of Bossa Nova Festival was that.

Today I got it on my favorite old vinyl store in Copacabana for a unbelievable price.
Let’s see.

This is Festival da Bossa Nova (1963), for Odeon, unfortunately, not the live recording of a Bossa Nova Festival, but a compilation of Bossa Nova tunes performed by selected artists from Odeon cast, as follows: Walter Wanderley, Joao Gilberto, Isaura Garcia, Pery Ribeiro and Luiz Bonfa. The album was new as it would be in 1963 and played so nicely that I did not need to use any noise reduction application. This is the perfect record for those who are new to Bossa Nova and for those who are looking for a session performed by great artists based on a nice repertoire.

Tracks include:

The Performers

Isaura Garcia
Joao Gilberto
Luiz Bonfa
Pery Ribeiro
Walter Wanderley

Track List

01 – Samba de Uma Nota Só – João Gilberto
02 – Só Em Teus Braços – Isaura Garcia
03 – Menina Flor – Luis Bonfá
04 – O Barquinho – Pery Ribeiro
05 – Insensatez – João Gilberto
06 – Você e Eu – Walter Wanderley
07 – Desafinado – João Gilberto
08 – Fio de Canção – Luis Bonfá
09 – Corcovado – Isaura Garcia
10 – Chega de Saudade – João Gilberto
11 – Meditação – Walter Wanderley
12 – Melancolia – Luis Bonfá

This record is a compilation from well known Odeon LP`s from the featured artists, but “So em teus bracos” is not on a regular Isaura Garcia LP. This comes from an interesting album called: Hebe Camargo “Hebe comanda o espetaculo”1961 (Odeon MOFB-3224). This is the album with the famous living room front cover. On the whole album Walter Wanderley arranged and played tunes for different singers. It would be nice to see this album too one day at Loronix.

Sivan Castelo Neto – 60 Anos de Musica (1984)

Hello, good evening! Let’s start today with something really unique a tribute album recorded in 1984 in homage for a very important Brazilian popular music artist, which is Sivan Castelo Neto, father of the singer and composer Vera Brasil and the journalist Berto Filho.

In spite of being of a great importance on the development of several different aspects of Brazilian communication and entertainment industry, Sivan Castelo Neto is unknown for many people. He was the first to record jingles in Brazil, being also a gifted musician, recording more than 3,000 jingles at his own recording studio. This album was produced by Berto Filho and Hugo Marotta and had the sponsorship of Petrobras, never being commercially available, a nice surprise sent by the great cvllos, featuring the participation of renowned Brazilian musicians on tracks never released before, such as: Luiz Eça, Tito Madi, Mauricio Einhorn, Helena de Lima, among many others.
Let’s see.

This is Sivan Castelo Neto – 60 Anos de Musica (1984), featuring two records, the first with music composed by Sivan Castelo Neto and performed by a constellation of special guests, and the second (Depoimentos) with Testimonials and jingles by Sivan Castelo Neto, which is very interesting for the friends who understand Portuguese and appreciate old jingles. This album was found by cvllos on a really bad condition and I decided to include the back cover with no image processing.

Sao Paulo Bossa Nova | Brazil 1

Sao Paulo represents 17% of Loronixers in Brazil and deserves this position. I have been in Sao Paulo several times in my life for Business, being the last two times to visit Caetano and hunt for records. It was enough to change several things in my mind about the city and people. People in Sao Paulo have a different attitude when together over a community such like Loronix, they value and put effort to be in touch with each other on a open and friendly environment. I have been learning a lot by Loronix affairs with Sao Paulo and I want to say THANKS to everybody who lives in this great city.

São Paulo is to Brazil what New York is to the United States - a cosmopolitan city, bristling with business activity and people from all over the world - both executives on the road and immigrants who settled there for good. And it shows in the music. A melting pot of civilizations, you will find a bit of everything in Sao Paulo. If you move to the interior, you will be immersed in country music, Sao Paulo style - at its best, very different from US country music, for instance. It is more subdued, more romantic and laid back.

But it is in the capital city that Sao Paulo shows the strength of its culture - it is there that experiments tend to be made, there you will find the avant-garde of Brazilian music, the absorption of the newest trends, mingled with local roots, the sounds of Europe, Asia and all of Brazil. Music for the night, for the brains and the body. Purely São Paulo.

This is Sao Paulo Bossa Nova, Caetano's compilation for the most connected Brazilian city at Loronix, featuring:

[brazilpost.jpg] No words, just feelings, Rio de Janeiro delivered a strong participation on Brazilian cities share of visitors at Loronix last year. It is the city that I live and as more as I try, I'm always talking, talking and talking about Rio de Janeiro. Actually, it is the city where Bossa Nova was born and the place that everybody interested on culture should go in the golden age of the music from Brazil.

Rio is a hotbed of musical creation, the homeland of styles such as choro, lundu, jongo, maxixe, samba (in all its many varieties, from the music of the samba schools to bossa nova and beyond), and many others. Rio is the birthplace of Chiquinha Gonzaga, Ernesto Nazareth, Jacob do Bandolim, Tom Jobim, Edu Lobo, Oscar Castro Neves, Baden Powell, Luiz Bonfá, Luiz Eça, Villa-Lobos (the greatest Brazilian classical composer) and too many to list here.

Therefore, it is impossible to summarize this entire musical explosion in two paragraphs. It can be wild, like in samba schools, or cool and sophisticated in bossa nova; or mellow and elegant, like choro; or aggressive like our local form of funk music. You could spend a lifetime listening and not hear it all. And Loronix is proud to present a nice chunk of it.

Bossa Nova nas Gerais | Brazil 3

[brazilpost.jpg] I will not hide my sympathy for the great State of Minas Gerais, my second State in Brazil. When I was a kid, I use to spend three months in Minas Gerais every year on a city located on south called Sao Lourenco. Minas Gerais is all about nature, bike ridings at the mountains and also birds. I have some of my birds there, they had to go away for living a better life and bring peace to my neighbors, they were about to expel me a couple of years ago.

Minas Gerais is a very special place; it was there that gold was first found in Brazil, spawning a rich culture during the Baroque period -- with the churches, status and classical music all around. It was there that many Portuguese noblemen came to live and make money, bringing along the tradition of European instruments and styles -- especially the music of bards and serenaders.

But Minas Gerais put a spin on it, as they do with everything is easy to sense and feel the style: never aggressive, very melodic, subtle, full of surprising harmonies to be played and sung carefully. It is well known in Brazil that people from Minas Gerais are expert at conversations that can last for hours. The same applies to their music: it feels like good conversation, acoustic guitar at hand, or the local form of the Spanish / Moorish with several different tunings, weaving sound around beautiful lyrics.

This is Bossa Nova nas Gerais, Caetano's compilation with Bossa Nova classics performed by renowned Brazilian artists and groups, featuring.

Bahia de Todas as Bossas | Brazil 4

[brazilpost.jpg]Here we go with the music from the country number one, Brazil. First of all, I would like to say that Caetano without knowing made one of my dreams come true. One of the most common questions of new Loronixers is how to start with Brazilian music, which is the best album for beginners? What to hear first? The answer comes with this set of four compilations, each one dedicated to one of the top four Brazilian States, ranked by number of visits to Loronix.

Bahia is the number four and is where the Portuguese first touched Brazilian soil, and also the first African slaves. It was there, also, that they first mixed and matched together with indians to create our race and our culture. Being a Northeastern state, close to the Equator, Bahia is usually hot, and hot is certainly their music (and their food, yes !).

Music from Bahia is easy to identify: strong beats, fierce rhythms, and an irresistible desired to swing your body. If not as harmonically sophisticated as others in Brazil, it is however unique in its high spirits and dancing quality. You will seldom find instrumental music in Bahia -- the mood there tends to singing at full voice, preferably in open spaces.

This is Bahia de Todas as Bossas, a compilation featuring best of breed Brazilian music. This is the music you should take with you to drive alongside the beautiful beaches from Bahia, Bahia de Todas as Bossas brings:

Harold_Z on Friday, 08 June, 2007I downloaded all 4 discs a couple of days ago but didn't get any into the cd player until today on the way to work and back. Thank you Zeca and Caetano.
What a great cd! Lots of people I have not heard previously (novice to Bossa Nova that I am)and, of course, some that I have. All great.
Zeca, these discs fulfill what you said about providing the best discs for beginners to Brazilian music. "One of the most common questions of new Loronixers is how to start with Brazilian music, which is the best album for beginners? What to hear first? The answer comes with this set of four..."

zecalouro on Friday, 08 June, 2007Hello Harold_z,

I’m very smart on saving this album for a special occasion, Caetano's Birthday. I hope this album can thrill the master. I'm quite sure that Caetano has it on his never-ending vinyl collection, but the idea is celebration and this album is perfect for the occasion. Let's see.

This is Sinter - 5o Aniversario do Lancamento do 1o Long-Play Nacional (1956), for Sinter, a very special album for Caetano's birthday, the legendary Sinter label tribute to the 5th anniversary of the first Brazilian LP in 1951. Sinter made a compilation of their main 10-inches released between 1951 to 1956, a truly unique and amazing album featuring sixteen tracks and 42 minutes of music, something really hard to see by that time. The cover artwork is also amazing with thumbnails of early Sinter 10-inches, the original releases of this fantastic compilation. Happy Birthday, Caetano.

L.A. Transit - DeNovo (1986)

Here we go again on another international release provided by Caetano Rodrigues. Actually, I think this is not exactly International, let's say it is a mix of Brazilian and International musicians assembled as a group to release this album, by the way, very hard to track information at the internet. My searches always felt on Los Angeles Transit department. It does not matter much, the little I known about it is enough to urge Loronixers to go jump on it.

This is L.A. Transit - DeNovo (1986), for Interface (Japan). Taking a DJ vocabulary, I would say this is a nice lounge jazz elevator music vibe and groove music. I think is much more, it is such a party of renowned musicians, such as Oscar Castro Neves, Jose Marinho, Tom Scott, Gracinda Leporace, Paulinho da Costa, Alex Acunha and others, making a record for fun accompanied by a trio of female voices that really makes the difference. Check personnel and do not miss this one.

Tracks include:

Track List:

01 - Mas que Nada
02 - Wave
03 - Zazueira
04 - How Insensitive
05 - Muito Mais
06 - Agua de Beber
07 - Pretty World
08 - Anything can Happen
09 - Summer Without You
10 - Tristeza

Great choice! I've enjoyed this disc for years. I think the songs & musicians definitely trascend the glossy 1980's production values. This was apparently a collection of artists brought together especially for this recording. In case anyone cares, here are the songwriting credits for the 3 new songs:
Muito Mas: Regina Werneck/Yutaka Yokokura
Anything Can Happen: Kate Markowitz/John Vester/Daihachi Kojima
Summer Without You: Lani Hall!!!/Yutaka Yokokura

Hi, I was familiar with these Japanese guys and a story about this album. They are enthusiasts of brasilian music and wanted to create an album like Sergio Mendes without Sergio. Recently, Yutaka was touring around the world as a member or Sergio's "Timeless" band.
