Manfredo Fest – After Hours (1972)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 20 de Novembro 2008.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Hello, good evening! Mr. Jose Ignacio Neto, kindly known as JIN, the third generation of the Ignacio’s family, a family devoted to Brazilian music, and also the owner and maintainer of the legendary “A Volta” Podcast, is back to Loronix.

JIN brings fantastic contributions this time, which includes a great “surprise to zeca”, an unknown album that JIN guarantees it is something never heard before by many friends. Stay tuned in the forthcoming days.
Let’s see.

This is Manfredo Fest – After Hours (1972), for Daybreak, featuring Manfredo Fest piano backed by a group of American musicians. JIN wants to start great and I agree this is a great start. Manfredo Fest is one of the most requested artists by Loronix community. He was a Bossa Nova pioneer in Brazil and had also a very solid career in the US, where he made his move in the mid 1960′s, invited by Sergio Mendes and never came back to Brazil. JIN also says this album is a sought after collectors piece and widely unknown in Brazil.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Manfredo Fest
(piano)
David King
(drums)
Jay Goetting, Dick Studer
(bass)
David Karr, Ray Komishke
(flute, sax)
Jack Gillespie
(trumpet)

Many thanks zeca and JIN.
I had seen information somewhere about this album a few years ago, but I’ve never heard the recording. Manfredo is still missed… a wonderful pianist.

oh what a smooth album! Thanks JIN for the upload! These recordings are just full of cool. I absolutely love the break down at the end of ‘Theme From Love Story’.

Manfredo e Seu Conjunto – Bossa Nova Nova Bossa (1963)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 18 de dezembro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

I was really decided to make a classic Samba Jazz album as the last post of the day and I hope my choice will make Loronix friends really pleased. It has been a while since we made available an album by Manfredo Fest, a gifted pianist that released several albums in the style in the 60′s.

Bossa Nova Nova Bossa features Manfredo Fest with a Conjunto, not as a traditional trio, and accompanied by great musicians. This album was first made available with the help of Low Cost Music and now comes back to Loronix as it is no longer commercially available.

Let’s see.

This is Manfredo e Seu Conjunto – Bossa Nova Nova Bossa (1963), for RGE, one of the earliest Manfredo Fest releases featuring a repertoire of Bossa Nova standards performed in Samba Jazz style. In this session Manfredo Fest plays piano, sax and organ, being also in charge of arrangements. Toninho Pinheiro, Hector Costita, Clayber and Os Titulares do Ritmo are Conjunto members, as described on personnel listing.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Manfredo Fest
(organ, piano, sax, arrangements)

Toninho Pinheiro
(drums)

Hector Costita
(sax, flute)

Clayber
(bass)

Os Titulares do Ritmo
(vocals)

Track List:

01 – Garota de Ipanema (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Batida Diferente (Durval Ferreira / Maurício Einhorn)
03 – Nós e o Mar (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
04 – Eu Sou Feliz (Lili Galiteri Fest)
05 – O Amor Que Acabou (Durval Ferreira)
06 – Bossa na Praia (Pery Ribeiro / Geraldo Cunha)
07 – Minha Saudade (João Donato)
08 – Bossa no Choro (Manfredo Fest)
09 – Outra Vez (Tom Jobim)
10 – Ah Se Eu Pudesse (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
11 – Olhou Pra Mim (Silvio César)
12 – Você e Eu (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)

Zero comments on a Manfredo Fest album. Again I find myself amazed, I have not been able to keep up with loronix for a long time and when I return I see this. Samba Jazz is represented by Manfredo Fest in a very nice way, he is an essential artist, and I would encourage all loronixers to try out his works. I mean, if you’re not completely obsessed only with Choros or the likes

Bossa Rio – Alegria! (1970)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 20 de outubro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

We have been very formal in the last couple of days trying to understand the origins of Bossa Nova, making associations like scientists and delivering some complex music.

Tomorrow is Saturday and it is time to make a short break. I said short break, because I like those Joao Gilberto discussions and the very old music we have been gathering to Loronix.

This album is one of the first made available at Loronix. He was there at the end of the row waiting for a rescue. However, he was not considered since a repost demand upgrades and I did not have this album. The panorama changed this week and I even made a challenge to identify musicians, very nice challenge with several friends participation until the final missing piece of the puzzle, solved by Mr. G. Let’s see.

This is Bossa Rio – Alegria (1970), for Blue Thumb Records, the second and last Bossa Rio LP a Brazilian group produced by Sergio Mendes that cannot be taken by mistake as the instrumental only group also lead by Sergio Mendes, the Bossa Rio Sextet. Sergio Mendes has a strong influence on Bossa Rio, the group sounds like Sergio Mendes Brasil ’66, but in my humble parrot opinion, Alegria is nicer to hear than any other Brasil ’66 LP, perhaps the participation of part of Bossa Tres (Octavio Bailly Jr. and Ronie Mesquita), Manfredo Fest, Pery Ribeiro and Gracinha Leporace, a very nice team.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Ronie Mesquita
(drums)

Octavio Bailly Jr.
(bass)

Manfredo Fest
(keyboards)

Gracinha Leporace & Pery Ribeiro
(vocals)

Dwight Dickerson
(piano)

Sergio Mendes
(producer)

Track List

01 – Spinning Wheel (D. Thomas)
02 – Zazueira (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)
03 – Girl Talk (B. Troup / N. Hefti)
04 – The Night Has a Thousand Eyes (B. Weisman / D. Wayne / M. Garrett)
05 – Que Pena (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)
06 – With You Love Now (Mustang Cor de Sangue) (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle / Vrs. Norman Gimbel)
07 – Open You Arms (Andança) (Danilo Caymmi / Edmundo Souto / Paulinho Tapajós / Vrs. Jay Livingston / Vrs. R. Evans)
08 – Eleanor Rigby (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
09 – Don’t Go Breaking My Heart (Burt Bacharach / David)
10 – Blackbird (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)

Yep! Dustygroove is a great resource to gather information about LPs. The only care we need to take is to not take their reviews without checking other sources. They sell the LPs and all reviews are good.

Manfred Fest went to USA with an American singer called Johnny Tallon who lived in Sao Paulo. I suppose he sung on Bossa Rio soon before Pery Ribeiro but I’m not sure. Does somebody know what happened to him?

Os Sambeatles - Os Sambeatles (1966)

We cannot mention UK without showing this masterpiece, Manfredo Fest Trio as Sambeatles, playing Beatles with Samba Jazz groove. Fascinating, even if you are not a Beatles fan. This is a repost and it is one of the first albums made available at Loronix. Perhaps nobody had the chance to see it at archives, so this is the chance that you cannot miss. Tracks include:
01 - Can't Buy Me Love (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
02 - Michelle (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
03 - A Hard Day's Night (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
04 - Girl (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)

05 - Ticket To Ride (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
06 - I Should Have Known Better (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
07 - Help (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
08 - Yesterday (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
09 - All My Loving (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
10 - And I Love Her (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
11 - Ask Me Why (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
12 - If I Fell (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)

I'm a huge fan of The Beatles, I said it before, not once, but many times, that's why UK picture is the legendary Abbey Road cover artwork. UK participation at Loronix was really solid with 173 cities getting in touch with Loronix last year. London takes the lead with 37% of visits, followed by Brentford, Manchester and Birmingham.

I have several friends from UK that I had the chance to make with Loronix. As I woke up today with memory gaps, I will not mention them, afraid of forgetting someone. My greeting goes to all Loronixers from UK, I hope you stay connected next year with the same strength you did last year.

Thanks, zecalouro

Manfredo e Seu Conjunto - Evolucao (1964)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 01 de março 2007.

I happened again, not a tragedy and no big deal, just the willing to make things perfect, but the post we decided to be the great close of the day is cancelled. Perhaps tomorrow. But I'm not bored, the replacement is great. Look at the picture. This is a very hard to find album, requested by several Loronixers. Sent by Caetano Rodrigues, The Great.

This is Manfredo e Seu Conjunto - Evolucao (1964), for RGE, perhaps one of most sought after album released by Manfredo Fest. Take a special attention to the quality of these MP3s, ripped by Caetano Rodrigues on best of breed equipment. Caetano is also an expert on those mysterious cartridges, stylus, tone arms brands and serial numbers. It is amazing. He knows everything by heart and I learned a lot with him. This is all for the benefit of our community, the deliverables were improved a lot in the last weeks and issue reporting are being kept to a minimum.

I was supposed to speak about Manfredo Fest and I'm here talking about equipments. It's because the music is self-explanatory, missing on several serious collections and essential. Mr. JimR will be pleased. Thanks Caetano.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Dorimar Vasconcelos
(piston)

Álvaro Brito
(vibrafone)

Luis De Andrade "Boneca"

02 - Samba Torto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
03 - Rio (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)

I had the chance to hear this LP for the first time yesterday; I did not know what I was missing. I decided to post this album as the second of our tribute to show how this record surprises me. I don't know details of Manfredo Fest biography and his association to the works of Antonio Carlos Jobim, but the first thing that came on my mind yesterday was that I had in hands a sincere and emotive tribute to Tom Jobim made by a fan, a sincere admirer of the Maestro, so great is the repertoire and so wonderful is the interpretation and details on each song. Thanks for this LP Caetano, truly amazing.

This is Manfredo Fest - Just Jobim (1998), for DMP. On top of everything I said before, this is the last Manfredo Fest LP. I use to never put my personal opinion on records at Loronix and I will make an exception this time, run for it. Period. Some tracks are not well known Jobim works and belongs to a movie soundtrack that you will hear about today, stay tuned.

Tracks include:
Personnel

Manfredo Fest
(piano)

David Finck
(bass)

Cyro Baptista
(percussion)

Steve Davis
(drums)

Track List

01 - Aguas de Marco
02 - Wave
03 - Desafinado
04 - Double Rainbow
05 - Amparo
06 - Girl from Ipanema
07 - Anos Dourados
08 - Agua de Beber
09 - Ligia
10 - So Tinha que Ser com Voce
11 - Quiet Nights
12 - Luisa

O manfredo fez um LP com seu trio que eu considero dos fundamentais
http://loronix.blogspot.com/2006/12/manfredo-fest-trio-manfredo-fest-trio.html
vocal e instrumental fantasticos. Acabou, como tantos outros, fazendo carreira nos EUA onde morreu. Deixou um herdeiro guitarrista que chegou a gravar com o pai. Vou assim que tiver, ouvir esse trabalho jobiniano dele.

Hi Zeca,
thank you for this Manfredo Fest album.
I would also like to hear Manfredo Fest e seu Conjunto "Evolucao" 1965(RGE XRLP-5.239)
Perhaps you or Caetano have this album too?

Fuzzy Bear on Thursday, 25 January, 2007
Great idea!
Some great records like “Tom Canta Vinicius” and “Salena Jones sings Jobim with the Jobim's“.
A significant one “Orfeu da Conceicao” from 1956.
Side by side with the schmaltz of Doris Day and the unnecessary tribute from 1997.
If you can, I would like to hear more live albums and rarities…
And thanks for the consistently posting superb music!
Obrigado,
Fuzzy Bear
