I was googling something that I cannot remember this week when I found an article written by Aramis Millarch in 1977 at the great Tabloide Digital. Millarch said that Nana Caymmi was among the top five Brazilian singer and ironically she was widely unknown by the audience in Brazil. Immediately, I went to Loronix to Find It Nana Caymmi and I got surprised when Find It returned only one album, made available almost two years ago. It is necessary to bring Nana Caymmi to Loronix first page.
Let’s see.

This is Nana Caymmi – Nana (1977), for RCA Victor, featuring Joao Donato, Dori Caymmi, Durval Ferreira (diretor criativo) and Dorival Caymmmi as special guest on track 02 – Milagre. This is a beauty of an album recorded by a great singer with a great team of musicians. Most of these tunes are well known by Nana Caymmi and other artist’s performances with my highlights on 02 – Milagre, 05 – Falam de Mim, 08 – Cais and 09 – Se Queres Saber, which is the track listed at Loronix Preview Center.

I was browsing the posts made at the very beginning of Loronix wondering about one of those mandatory upgrades. I found this one and I understood immediately that I was in front of those ones who deserve better media and also visibility at the first page. However, opening the comment section, I found a writing of one of the most respectful and renowned fans of the music from Brazil, B.J. Major, the owner and maintainer of The Music Discographies at www.bjbear71.com, serving up the best selected discographies on selected musicians since 1999, which make me feel really moved. I will take the opportunity to bring B.J. Major comment to this post. I could not make better.

Oh yeah! This is really a wonderful record. BJ really captures the beauty of this in his words. I couldn’t agree more. Donato’s piano playing is so achingly beautiful, each note with its own unique weight and careful attention. I’ve always wondered whether Brazilians thought these type of records were too “Americanized” (or more accurately, “U.S.ized”)…that somehow the rhythm was off. But to me it sounds pretty good. Goodwin and Richardson may not be Brazilian, but they certainly provide lovely support for Joao here.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Zecalouro, you taught me about Joao Donato, and especially about this perfect album. Now I have an upgraded version of it because of this re-post, and I am extremely grateful.
Claus Ogerman is brilliant; his work on this album rivals that of Jobim’s Wave. When Diana Krall wanted to make a bossa album, she made sure to get Ogerman to help add authenticity. Like Owen Bradley in the field of American “countrypolitan” music, Ogerman’s sound is immediately recognizable.
I thank you again, Zecalouro, for this upgrade.

I would like to understand why albums like this one are released, gone out of print and being kept unknown for many people, even those who collect Brazilian music. This is another great contribution by AdHoc, a gorgeous LP recorded by Miucha for Continental in 1989 that never had a CD reissue. I admit that I never heard about this one, and probably you did not also. AdHoc transition from classical to popular was great.

This is Miucha – Miucha (1989), for Continental, featuring the very special guests Pablo Milanes at track 01 – Buenos Dias America and Miucha’s daughter Bebel Gilberto at my favorite so far, track 06 – Saudosismo (Caetano Veloso). AdHoc highlights the overall music quality, the repertoire selection, arrangements and Miucha singing, which is really awesome. There are also four very early compositions by the Brazilian guitarist Guinga in partnership with Paulo Cesar Pinheiro. AdHoc delivers nice covers scans, including personnel listing with musicians identified by track, which I will list here as a whole. Thanks Adhoc, you really Rocks!

Well this has been released on CD in Japan. I paid megabucks for it. I knew I should have waited. Mine has a different cover, however. It’s a painting of her, in a similar pose. Which is the original?
For me this album is especially notable for the four Guinga ineditas – it was recorded just before Guinga began his recording career, although he’d been writing songs since the early ’70s.

It was also released on CD in France around 1990 (apparently that’s the version posted here). Both the French and the Japanese CDs are unavailable in the major online retailers, which means that they’re out of print. As for the cover, I’ve never seen the original Brazilian LP, but Pablo Milanes who played in the album displays the “French” cover in his web site. It probably means it’s the original.
If you don’t mind my curiosity, when and where did you buy your CD and how much is “megabucks”?

I bought it maybe six months ago on eBbay from someone in Japan, for about US$35. (Of course, the US dollar was worth a lot more then versus the Canadian dollar. Today it doesn’t seem all that expensive!)

Just a footnote to zecalouro’s comments:
“Solitude” is in different mood (no wordplay) compared to the other tracks of the album. This piano and voice rendition of Duke Ellington’s standard was recorded in New York City with pianist Albert Dailey and with the legendary electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos as sound engineer. Was it a one-song session? Or was it part of an abandoned project? Are there more songs from this session in a vault somewhere out there? Miúcha can tell.
Footnote to the footnote: Wendy Carlos was also sound engineer for João Gilberto’s 1973 LP (see Loronix post dated 8/14/2007), arguably, his best. Every sound detail is rendered with such an acute clarity that the perception of the rhythm is enhanced to the point of being almost hypnotic. This unique sound quality of João’s 1973 album stem in direct line from Wendy Carlos’ own recordings. In the late sixties and early seventies, she (well, actually he, at that point of his/her life, and under the name of Walter Carlos) recorded a series of seminal albums of electronic music in collaboration with Robert Moog, notably “Switched-On Bach”, featuring a synthesized baroque orchestra. Many other albums followed, including the OST for Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining”. This music still sounds amazing. Check her web site.

Albert Dailey played the piano in all tracks of “The Best of Two Worlds” (1976), the second Stan Getz / João Gilberto album (with Miucha). Actually, he played a lot with Stan Getz in the mid-70s. That’s where his Brazilian connection comes from.

This is Caetano Rodrigues homage to a very good friend of Loronix, Maria Helena, daughter of the friend you see at this beautiful cover. Amazon River is an unique release at Loronix, featuring Paulo Andre Barata, one of the most important artist from the city of Belem do Para at Amazon region.

Unique and at the same time beautiful, showing an artist very connected with the traditions of the Amazon region with a touch of the big Brazilian cities, perhaps given by Joao Donato, in charge of piano playing, music direction, vocal and instrumental arrangements.

Thanks to Maria Helena, her active participation at our community makes us remember this great artist.

This is Paulo Andre Barata – Amazon River (1980), for Continental, featuring compositions by Paulo Andre and his longtime partner and father, Ruy Barata. Brazilian friends will immediately remember the song 04 – Foi Assim, a blockbuster in the mid 70′s and the most successful song by the Brazilian singer Fafa de Belem. This album is the best of several words, Paulo and Ruy Barata compositions, the Amazon atmosphere, arrangements by Joao Donato and a constellation of musicians in the set.

Dois grandes precursores da Bossa-Nova: Johnny Alf e João Donato

Estes dois grandes músicos brasileiros foram talvez os mais importantes influenciadores de João Gilberto na criação da famosa "batida", característica principal do estilo Bossa-Nova.

Alfredo José da Silva, o Johnny Alf, nasceu no Rio de Janeiro em 19/05/1929, começou a aprender piano clássico aos nove anos com uma amiga da família, demonstrando logo cedo interesse por compositores do cinema norte americano como: George Gershwin e Cole Porter. Seu apelido veio por volta dos 14 anos, sugestão de uma amiga, quando de sua apresentação em um programa de Jazz na rádio MEC. Por esta época também fazia parte do instituto Brasil-Estados Unidos, ajudando na promoção e intercâmbio de música brasileira e americana.

Com este grupo do instituto, Johnny fundou um clube, que se reuniam para exibição de filmes, análise de orquestrações, shows, etc.

Um nome já famoso na época (1949) regressava dos EUA, e passou a fazer parte deste grupo, era Dick Farney, e o clube passou então se chamar "Sinatra-Farney fan club", tendo entre seus sócios entre outros: Tom Jobim, Luis Bonfá e Nora Ney.

Johnny se profissionalizou na noite a partir de 1952, quando começou a tocar em barzinhos e boates, primeiro no Rio e depois em São Paulo (a partir de 1955). 

No Rio tocou na Mandarin, depois o Clube da Chave, Drink e Plaza, onde João Gilberto ia ouvi-lo com frequência, e se impressionava com aquela modernidade ao ve-lo executar "Céu e Mar" e "Rapaz de Bem" duas composições suas.




Outro importante membro do "Sinatra-Farney", era um garoto com 15 anos então, que tocava acordeão e participava de algumas jams sessions, no clube e até na casa de Dick, este jovem prodígio era João Donato. 

Donato havia chegado do Acre  a 4 anos atrás com a família a 4 anos atrás, com 11 anos (e já com o acordeão).

Desde que se tem notícia, Donato sempre teve um swing, um gingado muito próprio com seu instrumento, alguma coisa com um pé no Brasil e um pé no Caribe, tocou também em boates, conjuntos e a partir de 1958 passou a tocar apenas piano,foi nesta época que compôs com João Gilberto, a música "Minha Saudade", que foi seu primeiro sucesso no início da Bossa-Nova.

A dupla de compositores Roberto Menescal e Ronaldo Bôscoli

Conheça um pouco mais da dupla de compositores: Roberto Menescal e Ronaldo Bôscoli, autores de grandes pérolas da MPB como : 'Tetê', O Barquinho, Ah se eu pudesse, e muitas outras.


E na interpretação destas jóias: Elis Regina, Sarah Vaughan, Maysa, Lúcio Alves entre outros... E na seleção musical uma gravação muito rara do grupo vocal 'Os Namorados' de 1953, com João Donato tocando ainda sanfona, com um suing parecido com o que João Gilberto desenvolveria 5 anos mais tarde e criaría a Bossa-Nova. Esta faixa foi extraída do Loronix, e ainda: Tom Jobim, Edu Lobo, Caetano Veloso e muito mais.

Olá a todos que nos visitam aqui no Rádio FORMA E ELENCO, uma homenagem ao melhor da produção musical brasileira, sua história e curiosidades. Martoni já postou o programa sobre Roberto Menescal e Ronaldo Bôscoli. Esses dois trouxeram muita luz do sol das praias do Rio de Janeiro, areia do mar e a beleza das mulheres cariocas para suas canções.

Ronaldo Bôscoli sempre foi um paquerador inconteste, já Menescal sempre muito tímido. A maioria de seus grandes sucessos como: O Barquinho, Ah se eu pudesse, Voçê e muitas outras, Ronaldo fez para sua grande paixão e musa Nara leão. Ele conta em seu livro de memórias que nunca se recuperou da separação, e ele dizia que Nara também não. O pivô da separação dos dois foi um suposto romance de Bôscoli e a cantora Maysa. Maysa ao retornar ao Brasil depois de uma turnê pelo cone sul das américas (Argentina, chile, etc...) com Bôscoli e demais músicos brasileiros, convocou uma coletiva de imprensa no aeroporto, e ao chegar anunciou seu casamento com Ronaldo (que não estava sabendo de nada). Foi o suficiente para o seu noivado com Nara ir por agua abaixo.

Mais tarde Ronaldo se casaria com Elis Regina, mas segundo ele, nunca esqueceu Nara. Estas e outras histórias vc conhece aqui no FORMA E ELENCO. Inclusive que esta blusa que João Gilberto usou para a foto da capa de seu primeiro LP (foto aí ao lado), era de Ronaldo. Na época, João morava de favor no apartamento de Bôscoli, e João vivia emprestando algumas peças do amigo.
