Pernambuco e Seu Conjunto – Em Ritmo de Dança (1957)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 30 de Julho 2009.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Hello, good evening! And thanks Moos for writing. Loronix was on hiatus for almost two weeks and things were really strange down here. My health has been stable; it was only a matter of accumulated work. I’ve been working as freelance since January and two websites I was making for my customers reached the final development stage in the last days, all together. Weird time of very hard work.

I will keep the community informed as soon as the result of these engagements gets on-line. Who knows someone needs a website and hires me, helping also Loronix.
Let’s see.

This is Pernambuco e Seu Conjunto – Em Ritmo de Danca (1957), for Polydor, with the well know pistonist Pernambuco delivering piano playing backed by a Conjunto, surprisingly credited by Polydor. This is not the first Pernambuco album at Loronix and you should not take by mistake the percussionist Pernambuco do Pandeiro, also active during the 1950′s. Pernambuco was also in charge of arrangements and some organ playing. The conjunto brings important musicians, such like the bassist Luis Marinho and the legendary Brazilian guitarrist Bandeirante.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Pernambuco
(piano, organ, arrangements)

Luis Marinho
(bass)

Sutinho
(drums)

Sylvio (Tancredi?)
(vibraphone)

Bandeirante
(electric guitar)

Antonio
(flute)

Pinocchio, Gilberto
(percussion)

Track List

01 – Pois e (Ataulpho Alves)
02 – You’re Sensational (Cole Porter)
03 – O Menino Grande (Antonio Maria)
04 – El Cubanchero (Rafael Hernandez)
05 – Historia de un Amor (Carlos Almaran)
06 – Requebrando (Mario Teresopolis / Guido Medina)
07 – Kalu (Humberto Teixeira)
08 – Tea for Two (Irving Caesar / Vincent Youmans)
09 – Ginga de Urubu (Pernambuco)
10 – Folha Morta (Ary Barroso)
11 – Begin the Beguine (Cole Porter)
12 – Forro no Limoeiro (Edgar Ferreira)

Caro Zeca,

Hello, good evening! I had today my great nephew Pedro with me throughout the whole preparation process of this album. We made everything together, including the vinyl washing, transfer, cover scanning, processing and the Google searches to gather information about.
Pedro was amazed with the fact this album was from 1956, which is something hard to believe for such a young person. He got really amazed with the results, the 10-inch format and even collaborated with the research, bringing us relevant music facts from 1956, as follows:
15/mar – Birth of Oswaldo Montenegro (Brazilian singer and composer).
15/mar – First run of My Fair Lady musical, New York, US.
28/mar – Birth of Zizi Possi (Brazilian singer).
15/jun – John Lennon is introduced to Paul McCartney.
05/nov – Passing of Art Tatum (American pianist).
14/Nov – Birth of Almir Satter (Brazilian singer, composer and instrumentalist).
…and he could also gather
Ribamar birth in 09-dec-1919 and his passing, 06-set-1987. Thanks Pedro.
Let’s see.

This is Ribamar – Dancando com Ribamar e Seu Conjunto (1956), for Columbia, featuring the first LP recorded by Ribamar and his third album available at Loronix, which is a very small amount. Ribamar was a very important musician and composer. He made a very famous duo with the Tito Madi, being also a frequent composition partner of Dolores Duran. Dancando com Ribamar e Seu Conjunto features Ribamar playing his first instrument, the accordion. Such like many other accordion players, Ribamar adopted the piano as soon the bossa nova was birth. The repertoire features a blending of Brazilian and international tunes; including two compositions written by Trio Surdina members, Chiquinho do Acordeon, Fafa Lemos and the legendary Garoto. Musicians were not credited by Columbia.

Tracks include.
01 – Dó Ré Mi (Fernando César)
02 – É Tão Sublime o Amor (Love Is a Many Splendored Thing) (Paul Francis Webster / S. Fain)
03 – Autumn In Rome (Weston / S. Cahn / Cicognini)
04 – Insinuando (José Scarambone)
05 – Duas Vidas (Ribamar / Esdras Pereira da Silva)
06 – Stranger In Paradise (R. Wright / G. Forrest)
07 – Mambinho (Garoto / Chiquinho do Acordeom)
08 – Nós Três (Chiquinho do Acordeom / Garoto / Fafá Lemos)

Great find, Zeca!
Downloading the flac file as I write.
I consider Ribamar as one of the greatest personalities in all Brazilian music. It was actually enough for me to hear him once to realize that such heavenly piano playing I have never heard before. Needless to say that I started a freneticall search for all his recordings, which looked like an impossible task as they are so rare, but luckily proved successful: I managed to find 3 more of his LPs besides the ones which were allready posted on Loronix.
Now I can’t wait till the download is finished to hear this one!
Thanks a thousand times for posting it!
Cheers

Eu agradeço a comunidade.

Second comment after listening for days to Dancando com Ribamar e Seu Conjunto:
It is on top of my “Favorites from other blogs” list.
From my personal faraway, Serbian point of wiew (unburdened with general conventions, local prejudices, historical significance of an artist etc), Ribamar is part of the “Holy Trinity” of all Brazilian music, together with Moacyr Silva and Waleska.
Actually the album that they performed together on (A Fossa), is still the one I consider as the absolute highlight of all music I have ever heard…
Zeca, If it were not for loronix, I am afraid that the best music that was ever produced would be completely hidden and forgotten.
Thanks once more

Milan

Hello Milan,

Many thanks for all the support you give to Loronix.
I have good news. Just remembered another Ribamar LP at Loronix, released by the legendary SPOT label. Ribamar plays that common role of recording with a fictitious name, which is Quinteto Romantico – Bastante Intimo (no date).
Hope uEnjoy!

Milan Filipović on Wednesday, 09 September, 2009
Thanks Zeca, I had no idea that Ribamar recorded under another name too. “Quinteto Romantico” isa actually the mono version of the “Nosso Encontro de Amor” which you have on loronix, with a different cover name etc. I have also a third version of the same album (no difference in sound, also released by Equipe) on my blog, just the name is “Duas Faces de Amor” and it has a black snd white, jazz looking cover.
Cheers

Hello, good evening! I spent a lot of energy trying to make a nice transfer of this beautiful and important album. Unfortunately, the outcome was a little behind the others.

Violao solo albums are always difficult to transfer. Sometimes the silence is part of the music and any imperfection becomes easily audible. However, this is an above the average violao only album, recorded by one of the most influent Brazilian violao players, Dilermando Reis
Let’s see.

This is Dilermando Reis – Sua Majestade o Violao (1957), for Continental, his 12-inch LP, featuring fascinating Dilermando Reis renditions of classical tunes on side A and Brazilian popular music on side B.

I cannot decide which side I like most, but track 05 – Noturno Nº 2 Opus 10 (Frederic Chopin) really made my mind today and it is my choice on our preview feature, available just before the download links.

Tracks include:

01 – Malagueña (Ernesto Lecuona)
02 – Pavana (Francisco Tárrega)
03 – Clair de Lune (Debussy)
04 – Romanza (Schumann)
05 – Noturno Nº 2 Opus 10 (Frederic Chopin)
06 – Se Ela Perguntar (Dilermando Reis / Jair Amorim)
07 – Romance de Amor (Vicente Gomes)
08 – Índia (José Asunción Flores / Manuel Ortiz Guerrero)
09 – Foi Bôto Sinhá (Waldemar Henrique / Antônio Tavernard)
10 – Araguaia (Dilermando Reis)
11 – Marcha Triunfal Brasileira (Benedito Chaves)

O Quarteto – Antologia da Bossa Nova . 20 Anos Depois (1977)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 24 de Abril 2009.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Do you like vocal groups? I do. It is nice to hear and understand arrangements made for voices and this group excels on this kind of thing.

O Quarteto recorded only three albums, two are available here at Loronix, while the third, released in 1969, is totally unknown to my ears.

This is a reposting with several improvements, including the FLAC files and high quality front and back cover scans. I will keep my original writing with a few and cosmetic adaptations.

Thanks once again for the successful funding raising campaign we made in just three days. Stay tuned for new features.

Hello, good evening! I feel great today. I think it was a snack that made me feel bad yesterday, nothing better than 12 hours of continuous sleeping to get yourself fixed. Since I feel good, let’s have a great start today with a record that I like a lot, taking advantage of the last records picturing Bossa Nova 10, 29, 30 years after.
Let’s see what we have here.

This is O Quarteto – Antologia da Bossa Nova 20 Anos Depois (1977), for Philips. You probably remember
the first O Quarteto LP released at Loronix, but if you don’t, O Quarteto is a vocal group that released only two self-titled albums in the late 60′s, in spite of the active participation they had on several Festivais da Cancao. Antologia da Bossa Nova 20 Anos Depois was released with an interval of 9 years between the second LP. I do not have available info of the reasons they do not made albums, since they are a great vocal group that is always backed up by renowned musicians, as you can check bellow at personnel listing.

Tracks include:

Personnel

O QUARTETO
Paulinho Palarico Correa
Walter Gozzo
Carlos Alberto de Lima Vianna
Hermes Antonio Dos Reis

Vocal Arrangements
Carlos Alberto de Lima Vianna & Walter Gozzo

Arrangements
Cesar Camargo Mariano

Cesar Camargo Mariano
(bass, piano, fender, syntorchestra, percussion)

Dudu Fortes

Carlos Alberto de Lima Vianna

Track List

Dear Zeca, I’m very disappointed.
I was so happy… I was sure to have at least one album you don’t have, an old brazilian LP from a group named “O Quarteto”, a Bossa Nova anthology. I was already searching it in my collection, ready to send it to you as a humble gift, a small thank compared to what you offer to us.
But before, I have googled the web, in order to see what is indicated about this group and this album (and a possible re-edition in CD):
- I typed “Quarteto” & “20 anos depois”
- pressed button “Search”
- … and here I am, return at Loronix!

Is there any brazilian disk that can escape you? I despair to be ever able to pay my debt with brazilian music as money…
I have a few other ideas, but now, big thanks for this original and interesting disk: my record-player is old, head must be changed and I can’t find easily what’s needed: I have hundreds of old LPs and am unable to listen to them. I can now hear again this LP with pleasure (and with the best quality).
Hat off, Mr. Zeca!

O Quarteto – O Quarteto (1968)

Yesterday, I was chatting with Cleber and Renato at Loronix Live Chat, which is the chatting application inside Loronix Forum and Cleber suggested an LP from the vocal group O Quarteto. Cleber said also that the four O Quarteto members are all engineers, something that I could not check.

The first time I saw a LP from O Quarteto was at NAmerica Loves SAmerica from Now, that has the last and late O Quarteto LP recorded in 1977.

I’m introducing this vocal group with another release; this is O Quarteto – O Quarteto (1968), for Phillips, which is O Quarteto debut LP. I was not successful searching bios information from this band, but many people appreciates this group that apparently had a short life, recording two LPs in the late 60′s and the last release available at Now’s blog. They have also important participations at Brazilian music festivals from the 60′s. Let’s see how O Quarteto performs here at Loronix.

Tracks include:

01 – Os Grilos (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
02 – Live For Life (Vivre Pour Vivre) (F. Lai)
03 – O Velho (Chico Buarque)
04 – Bonita (Tom Jobim)
05 – Rua Antiga (Roberto Menescal / R. Richter)
06 – Who Needs Forever (Q. Jones / Greenfield)
07 – Waves (Tom Jobim)
08 – Maria Madrugada (Toninho Horta / Junia Horta)
09 – Canta (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
10 – Here There And Everywhere (John Lennon / Paul McCartney)
11 – Isso Não Se Faz (Pixinguinha / Hermínio Bello de Carvalho)
12 – Tenderly (W. Gross / J. Lawrence)

Hello, good evening! I’m very proud of you. We are very close to reach our goal at another dedicated server campaign. This is really awesome. Thank you! I thought we would not make it this year. And the most important, this kind of initiative is all about commitment, is about my commitment to the community to keep Loronix alive for another year. Anyway, I cannot say anything besides thank you to all and the show must go on.
Let’s see.

This is Moraes Moreira – Cara e Coração (1977), for Som Livre, which is the second solo LP of Moraes Moreira, founder and perhaps the most successful member of the legendary group Os Novos Baianos, a favorite of many Loronixers. This is the first Moraes Moreira career LP released at Loronix, kindly provided by AdHoc, which is a guarantee of an impeccable transfer, high quality scans and mainly, a very solid listen, as aways. Thanks AdHoc.

Henry Nirenberg e sua Orquestra - Percussão Espetacular (196?)

.
.
O Jogo dos Pseudônimos
.

Duncan Lamont - Best Of The Bossa Novas (1970)

Comentários originais incluídos.

If you are reading this text just to realize if this record is good or not, take my advice and skip my writing going straight to the music at the link bellow. This is a fantastic album. Duncan Lamont is the name of the main performer.

I’m not versed on Jazz such many Loronixers, but I bet that this album and Duncan Lamont is unknown to many friends. I will be straightforward; it is not fair to drag you with my writing this time.

This is Duncan Lamont – Lo Mejor de La Bossa Nova (1970), for Pathe (Argentina). Duncan Lamont is not Argentinean and Caetano shows us the Argentinean edition of The Best of The Bossa Novas, originally issued by MFP in UK. Duncan Lamont was born in Scotland and is a renowned studio musician, played with almost everyone in show business. It is a pleasure to hear Duncan sax on this very solid album, but what amazes me most is the performance of the three bass players at the set, everything works fine with The Best of the Bossa Novas.

Tracks include:

01 – Desafinado
02 – Un Hombre y una Mujer
03 – Sunny
04 – Meditacion
05 – Manana de Carnaval
06 – Insensatez
07 – La Chica de Ipanema
08 – Corcovado
09 – Samba de una Nota Sola
10 – La Sombra de tu Sonrisa
11 – Llamame
12 – Llevame voltando a la Luna

Martoni:

Superb! First, Roy Budd. Now, Duncan Lamont…what next, the Dudley Moore Trio? Thanks for another tasteful international LP. Awesome cover too. How about some bossa from Scandanavia & Japan?

Hello, good evening! In the year of 1978, RCA released a tribute album in honor of Bossa Nova 20th year’s anniversary, “Velha” Bossa Nova, featuring musicians from RCA cast or from the record labels later acquired or merged by or with RCA. This is the short intro of one of the best compilations I have heard in decades. Believe me?

Caro, Zeca

Hello, good evening! This is the third album I’m making available from this obscure record company with the name and logo based on an animal that does not exists in Brazil, the legendary Tiger.

Little I know about this label except these albums, the excellent
Moacyr Marques e Seu Conjunto – Jazz & Bossa Nova (1959), a contribution of my Mentor Caetano Rodrigues and this early Hermeto Pascoal recording with Pernambuco do Pandeiro e Seu Regional – Batucando no Morro (1958), both really worth checking out.

Catulo de Paula is an artist requested by many friends, many and important friends, such like Frank-Oliver Hellman, which I want to say thanks for recommending Catulo de Paula a long time ago.
Let’s see.

This is Catulo de Paula – Catulo Canta no Michel (1959), for Tiger. Catulo de Paula delivers a repertoire based on his performances at Michel Bar, a nightclub I never heard about. According with Guio de Moraes liner notes, Catulo de Paula performed on Michel Bar for more than a year, accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. Ze Menezes delivers fantastic instrumental accompaniment to Catulo de Paula leading a trio of guitar, drums and bass. By the way, Ze Menezes gives a real lesson of how accompany singer with a guitar. Really worth checking out.

Martoni: Catulo de Paula = Hermenegildo de Paula.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Catulo de Paula

Ze Menezes
(violao)

Paulo
(bass)

Trinca
(drums)

Track List

01 – Balada Triste (Dalton Vogeler / Esdras Pereira da Silva)
02 – Viva Meu Samba (Billy Blanco)
03 – Suas Mãos (Antônio Maria / Pernambuco)
04 – Pau-de-arara (Guio de Morais / Luis Gonzaga)
05 – Tenho Pena da Noite (Catulo de Paula / Marino Pinto)
06 – Lamento (Djalma Ferreira / Luis Antônio)
07 – Castigo (Dolores Duran)
08 – Aliança (Madame Fulano de Tal) (Cyro Monteiro / Dias da Cruz)
09 – Nosso Mocambo (Catulo de Paula)

Hi Zeca,
thank you that you remembered my wish to hear a Catulo de Paula album after all this time. This is a great album and I didn´t know its existence. In the discography at allbrazilianmusic his 1963 album “A Simplicidade de Catulo de Paula” is listed as his debut (Odeon MOFB 3345). This Tiger album from 1959 is not listed there so this is a real find. The 1963 album looks also interesting because all compositions there are by Catulo himself.
Catulo de Paulo was also involved in the soundtrack recording for the Jean-Paul Belmondo film “L´homme de Rio”, which was shot in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia in 1963. He participated also in the album “Pobre Menina Rica” by Carlos Lyra and Dulce Nunes, already posted at Loronix. Thank you again Zeca for this great post

Só tristeza e dor vai me acompanhar
Até que a fé que tinha
A minha esperança quer me abandonar

Hello, good evening! My Internet access stills very limited with extremely slow upload rates. I did not want to keep Loronix with no updates today and my solution was gathering a 10-inch album, which is not an issue since we have truly amazing albums to explore in the format.

This one is a perfect example, this is the second LP released by Maestro Radames Gnattali at Continental. For reasons that I cannot understand Radames Gnattali name is not available at the front cover, just like the first one. It is necessary to read the back cover for this information. I would like to remember that covers and individual tracks are always available at the end my writings as individual downloads; the covers are available as direct download links with no Rapidshare.
Let’s see.

This is Radames Gnattali – Joias Musicais do Brasil (1954), for Continental, featuring Radames Gnattali selections. arrangements and piano.

A small and not credited band makes the accompaniement. All my searches on this album failured, which was the way I choose to retrieve credit information on the good musicians we have here, especially the guitar and accordion player.

Tracks include:

01 – Rancho Fundo (Ary Barroso / Lamartine Babo)
02 – Despertar da Montanha (Eduardo Souto)
03 – Casinha Pequenina (Tradicional)
04 – Luar de Paquetá (Hermes Fontes / Freire Júnior)
05 – Nuvens (Eduardo Souto)
06 – Carinhoso (Pixinguinha / João de Barro)
07 – Guacyra (Hekel Tavares / Joracy Camargo)
08 – Linda Flor (Henrique Vogeler / Cândido Costa / Luiz Peixoto)

Absolutely lovely album. Thank you so much.

A correction: the lyricist of “Guacyra” is Joracy (not Juraci) Camargo.
Also, since the lyricists of the other songs were named, it’s only fair to name those of “Linda Flor” as well. They are Cândido Costa and Luiz Peixoto (who wrote different lyrics but are traditionally included in the credits).
Thanks again for this jewel.
