Varios Artistas – Instrumental Bossa Nova (1989)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 11 de julho 2007.

Here we go on another Caetano Rodrigues contribution, actually, highly recommended by Caetano and the kind of album that should be released more often. We do not have a band here, either a main performer, perhaps I'm wrong, but this is just top-notch Brazilian musicians assembled to record instrumental renditions of Bossa Nova tunes. Let's check why this album is Caetano's favorite pick.

This is Instrumental Bossa Nova (1989), for Visom. The fun of this album is to hear performances of classic Bossa Nova tunes by new generation musicians using new recording technologies. Personnel is available bellow, as well tracks.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Marinho Boffa (piano)
Idrss Bodrioua (sax alto)
Paulo Belinatti (violao)
Paulo Braga (bateria)

with special guests

Paulo Russo (bass)
Nico Assumpção (bass)

Track List

01 - Imagem
02 - O Barquinho
03 - Garota de Ipanema
04 - Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce
05 - Tristeza de Nos Dois
06 - Samba de Verao
07 - Wave
08 - Inutil Paisagem
09 - Terço

Os Cariocas – Minha Namorada (1990)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 06 de Novembro 2008.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Hello, good evening! I found this album on one of those old vinyl shops in Rio, and I always thought it was just a compilation with tracks taken from previous albums.

If I knew this is the first album recorded by Os Cariocas after a 21 years hiatus, I would have made it available at Loronix earlier. Minha Namorada features a repertoire with the greatest Os Cariocas tunes. The cover brings autographs of each component, where Quartera signs in place of Luiz Roberto, who unfortunately died in this period. Confirmation is needed, but I believe this album was signed by Os Cariocas after the tragic Luiz Roberto passing.
Let’s see.

This is Os Cariocas – Minha Namorada (1990), for Som Livre. It is unbelievable this album is out of print. The recording quality is amazing and I really recommend that you take good headphones to hear the sophisticated vocal arrangements made by Severino Filho. Os Cariocas is really a unique and very special vocal group.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Severino Filho
(piano, 1st voice, arrangements)

Badeco
(violao, 2nd voice)

Luiz Roberto
(bass, 3rd voice)

Quartera
(drums, 4th voice)

Track List

01 – Minha Namorada (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Samba do Avião (Tom Jobim)
03 – Tema Para Lúcia (Severino Filho)
04 – Samba da Pergunta (Pingarilho / Marcos Vasconcellos)
05 – Você e Eu (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
06 – Ela É Carioca (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – Wave (Tom Jobim)
08 – Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)

Hello, good evening! Let’s start today showing a tribute album released by Coca Cola company to an artist never approached before at Loronix, which is Maestro Claudio Santoro, a very important musician that influenced renowned Brazilian popular artists, such like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Radames Gnattali.

Claudio Santoro was a very prolific composer, leaving nine symphonies, three piano concertos and seven string quartets. He died in the city of Brasilia on the March 1989, while conducting the rehearsal of an orchestra. I urge Loronixers to visit the official Claudio Santoro website, owned and maintained by Alessandro Santoro, it truly one of the best tribute website I have ever seen to a musician, featuring both Portuguese and English section, at
http://www.claudiosantoro.art.br.

This is Claudio Santoro – Preludios e Cancoes de Amor (1989), sponsored by Coca Cola company and never made available commercially, only distributed to customers as part of 1989 Christmas celebrations. Gilson Peranzzetta plays piano and leads a constellation of Brazilian musicians to perform ten Claudio Santoro compositions, such as Oscar Castro Neves, Quarteto em Cy, Boca Livre, Jacques Morelenbaum, among others. The back cover brings liner notes by Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim.

João Gilberto, Sylvia Telles & Dick Farney – João Gilberto, Silvia Telles & Dick Farney (1988)

This is a very interesting compilation sent by Dona Iara that it is not listed on any discography, at least the ones that I could check. By the way, several compilations were released in the late 80′s and most of them are pretty unknown. I don’t know if it is a matter of limited editions, but they are really worth checking. This LPs were recorded in the turn of the shift between vinyl to CD and they have a pretty good sound. This one is really obscure featuring remastered tunes of three great artists. Let’s see.

This is Joao Gilberto, Sylvia Telles & Dick Farney – Joao Gilberto, Silvia Telles & Dick Farney (1988), for EMI-Odeon, perfect for those who are giving the first steps towards Brazilian music and want to have in a glance Bossa Nova cuts from three legends. These recordings range from 1957 to 1961, as detailed on track list.

Tracks include:

01 – Desafinado – JOAO GILBERTO (1958)
02 – Dindi – SYLVIA TELLES (1959)
03 – Este Seu Olhar – DICK FARNEY (1959)
04 – O Barquinho – JOAO GILBERTO (1961)
05 – A Felicidade – SYLVIA TELLES (1959)
06 – Alguem como Tu – DICK FARNEY (1958)
07 – Insensatez – JOAO GILBERTO (1961)
08 – Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce – SYLVIA TELLES (1957)
09 – Corcovado – JOAO GILBERTO (1960)
10 – Copacabana – DICK FARNEY (1958)
11 – Estrada do Sol – SYLVIA TELLES (1958)
12 – Samba de Uma Nota So – JOAO GILBERTO (1960)
13 – Marina – DICK FARNEY (1958)
14 – Eu Sei que Vou te Amar – SYLVIA TELLES (1959)

What an album! Really great music. We had a great feedback from Loronixers on the last Olivia Byington record, Anjo Vadio. Now it is time to get along with another nice album by this great Brazilian singer, pretty different from the last one and really solid.

Olivia Byington performs with the Brazilian pianist Joao Carlos Assis Brasil, twin brother of the legendary saxophonist Victor Assis Brasil, a gifted pianist with a classical background, but also a great popular music performer. This should be a real treat. Let’s see.

This is Olivia Byington & Joao Carlos Assis Brasil – Olivia Byington & Joao Carlos Assis Brasil (1990), for Columbia, Olivia voice with Joao Carlos piano. I have no doubt that Olivia Byington is one of the greatest singer active in Brazil, being also a great collaborator, such as she did with Egberto Gismonti on her early recordings and now with Joao Carlos Assis Brasil.
I had a thought time making this ripping. Actually, I did it twice, the back cover does not bring the correct repertoire and I took a time to understand that the correct listing was available at both labels for side A and B at the vinyl media. I hope everything is fine this time.

Tracks include:

01 – Medley “Cole Porter” Just One Of Those Things (Cole Porter) I Get a Kick Out Of You (Cole Porter) Let’s do It (Let’s Fall In Love) (Cole Porter)
02 – Medley “Gershwin” Summertime (George Gershwin / Dubose Heyward) Bess You Is My Woman (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin) Embraceable You (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin) I’ve Got Rhythm (George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin)
03 – Medley “Tom Jobim” Canta Mais (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) Anos Dourados (Tom Jobim / Chico Buarque) Por Toda a Minha Vida (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
04 – Medley “Cartola” O Mundo É Um Moinho (Cartola) Acontece (Cartola)
05 – La Vie En Rose (Edith Piaf / Louiguy)
06 – Medley “Kurt Weill” Don’t Be Afraid (K. Weil / B. Drecht) September Song (K. Weil / M. Anderson)
07 – Uva de Caminhão (Assis Valente)
08 – Luar do Sertão (Catulo da Paixão Cearense) Tico-tico no Fubá (Zequinha de Abreu)
09 – Caravela (Egberto Gismonti / Geraldo Carneiro)
10 – Beau Soir (C. Debussy / P. Bourget)
11 – Medley “Victor Assis Brasil” One For Madam (Victor Assis Brasil) Elba (Victor Assis Brasil)

Zeca, the last track is definitely the Villa-Lobos medley, just as the cover says. I suspect the Victor Assis Brasil Medley may be a bonus track on the CD version, but nobody seems to know — maybe Carlão does?
Anyway, what a voice! Thanks for this. What’s next, her Cuban album, Identidad, or her very ’80s-pop, Música?

I would like to understand why albums like this one are released, gone out of print and being kept unknown for many people, even those who collect Brazilian music. This is another great contribution by AdHoc, a gorgeous LP recorded by Miucha for Continental in 1989 that never had a CD reissue. I admit that I never heard about this one, and probably you did not also. AdHoc transition from classical to popular was great.

This is Miucha – Miucha (1989), for Continental, featuring the very special guests Pablo Milanes at track 01 – Buenos Dias America and Miucha’s daughter Bebel Gilberto at my favorite so far, track 06 – Saudosismo (Caetano Veloso). AdHoc highlights the overall music quality, the repertoire selection, arrangements and Miucha singing, which is really awesome. There are also four very early compositions by the Brazilian guitarist Guinga in partnership with Paulo Cesar Pinheiro. AdHoc delivers nice covers scans, including personnel listing with musicians identified by track, which I will list here as a whole. Thanks Adhoc, you really Rocks!

Well this has been released on CD in Japan. I paid megabucks for it. I knew I should have waited. Mine has a different cover, however. It’s a painting of her, in a similar pose. Which is the original?
For me this album is especially notable for the four Guinga ineditas – it was recorded just before Guinga began his recording career, although he’d been writing songs since the early ’70s.

To pawlyshyn.
It was also released on CD in France around 1990 (apparently that’s the version posted here). Both the French and the Japanese CDs are unavailable in the major online retailers, which means that they’re out of print. As for the cover, I’ve never seen the original Brazilian LP, but Pablo Milanes who played in the album displays the “French” cover in his web site. It probably means it’s the original.
If you don’t mind my curiosity, when and where did you buy your CD and how much is “megabucks”?

I bought it maybe six months ago on eBbay from someone in Japan, for about US$35. (Of course, the US dollar was worth a lot more then versus the Canadian dollar. Today it doesn’t seem all that expensive!)
By the way, Zeca, my booklet includes photos and the lyrics. If you’re interested I could scan the whole thing and send it to you.

Just a footnote to zecalouro’s comments:
“Solitude” is in different mood (no wordplay) compared to the other tracks of the album. This piano and voice rendition of Duke Ellington’s standard was recorded in New York City with pianist Albert Dailey and with the legendary electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos as sound engineer. Was it a one-song session? Or was it part of an abandoned project? Are there more songs from this session in a vault somewhere out there? Miúcha can tell.
Footnote to the footnote: Wendy Carlos was also sound engineer for João Gilberto’s 1973 LP (see Loronix post dated 8/14/2007), arguably, his best. Every sound detail is rendered with such an acute clarity that the perception of the rhythm is enhanced to the point of being almost hypnotic. This unique sound quality of João’s 1973 album stem in direct line from Wendy Carlos’ own recordings. In the late sixties and early seventies, she (well, actually he, at that point of his/her life, and under the name of Walter Carlos) recorded a series of seminal albums of electronic music in collaboration with Robert Moog, notably “Switched-On Bach”, featuring a synthesized baroque orchestra. Many other albums followed, including the OST for Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining”. This music still sounds amazing. Check her web site.

Dear Mr Carter,
Albert Dailey played the piano in all tracks of “The Best of Two Worlds” (1976), the second Stan Getz / João Gilberto album (with Miucha). Actually, he played a lot with Stan Getz in the mid-70s. That’s where his Brazilian connection comes from.

Toninho Horta – Diamond Land (1989)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 30 de setembro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Here we have an artist that everybody asks for an album at Loronix. It took a long time until we have the necessary to make available one of his works, but the long waiting really worth, this is one of the best albums recorded by Toninho Horta and it is amazing that Diamond Land never had a CD issue, being out of print on “CD era”, at least the far as I could search.

This is Toninho Horta – Diamond Land (1989), for Philips, featuring a true legend of the Brazilian guitar, Toninho Horta, backed by several renowned musicians, including the acclaimed Wayne Shorter.

It’s very hard to describe Toninho Horta, so I’m taking the liner notes of Diamond Land, written by Pat Metheny. I could never make better.

“Musicians everywhere love Toninho Horta’s songs. Through his work with Milton Nascimento, his own recordings and the cover versions of his tunes that have appeared on various albums throughout the past decade or so, Toninho has emerged as one of the most harmonically sophisticated and melodically satisfying Brazilian composers of recent times.
Somehow, he writes chord progressions that defy gravity, moving up when you think they’re going down. His melodies stay with you for days; you’re sure you’ve heard them before, but they are brand new. And as an arranger, he’s a master. (Not just with his own music either – check out what he does here with “Diamond Land”). As a guitarist, he’s one of the world’s great “compers” on viola. (That’s a nylon-string guitar to us gringos). He plays such great voicings with such a cool time feel… (I’ve often described him to other musicians as the Herbie Hancock of Bossa Nova guitarists). His love of jazz guitar playing is well represented here, as is his excellent singing.
In short, Toninho Horta is an incredible musician, the rare guitarist who understand harmony in its most intimate ways and – above all – one of the finest and gentlest people I’ve ever had the good fortune of knowing. This record, DIAMOND LAND, is a great addition to Toninho’s ongoing work, and will also serve as an excellent introduction to those listeners not yet familiar with his music.”-Pat Metheny

Luiz, it’s really true that TH had “Diamond Land” issued on CD in US. The “Verve Forecast” label released other two amazing TH albums: “Moonstone” (with Pat Metheny on one track) and “Once I Loved” (with Billy Higgins and Gary Peacock). All of them had CD issues in the past, but are out of print worldwide, as far i am concerned. That’s the reason this post is very special.

Clara Sverner & Paulo Moura – Vou Vivendo (1986)

Hello, good evening! Let’s start this Saturday with another classy contribution by cvllos, featuring Clara Sverner and Paulo Moura. It was very wise of cvllos to send this one for the weekend. It’s cold in Rio de Janeiro and this album is a perfect match, at least with my mood today. Let’s see.

This is Clara Sverner & Paulo Moura – Vou Vivendo (1986), for EMI Odeon, featuring the classic piano of Clara Sverner and the acclaimed sax player Paulo Moura performing Pixinguinha, Radames Gnattali, Chiquinha Gonzaga and Ronaldo Miranda. This is a live recording of a concert at Escola Nacional de Música, Salao Leopoldo Miguez in Rio de Janeiro. A music video by Pedro Mendes is also available with Clara Sverner and Paulo Moura performing at Sala Funarte Sidney Miller in 1983.

Tracks include:

01 – Vou Vivendo (Pixinguinha / Benedito Lacerda)
02 – Lamento (Pixinguinha / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Ingênuo (Benedito Lacerda / Pixinguinha)
04 – Atraente (Chiquinha Gonzaga)
05 – Amapá (Chiquinha Gonzaga)
06 – Io T’amo (Chiquinha Gonzaga)
07 – Monotonia (Radamés Gnattali)
08 – Samba-canção (Radamés Gnattali)
09 – Devaneio (Radamés Gnattali)
10 – Fantasia (Ronaldo Miranda)

.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 19 de agosto 2007.

I had the chance to watch a little performance of a new and very solid Brazilian vocal group, Grupo Nós Quatro, a quartet of voices lead by the mighty Celia Vaz, a Brazilian arranger, violonista and composer, with songs recorded by many Brazilian artists and arrangers delivered to classic albums, such like Dom Um Romao - Hotmosphere, one of the most downloaded albums at Loronix.

I spoke with some friends at that concert about this Brazilian vocal group - Grupo Chovendo na Roseira - introduced to me by Carlos Braga and just a few said know their existence. That's why I think this nice album will make the day of several fans of female vocal groups. Let's see.

This is Grupo Chovendo na Roseira - Interpreta Tom Jobim (1988), for Som Livre, another Caetano Rodrigues contribution made by request of Carlos Braga. Carlos knows everything about Chovendo na Roseira and sent to us a nice text with the information that nobody knows, as follows (Carlos, correct if I made a mistake on translation, please):

"Grupo Chovendo na Roseira features Bia Paes Leme, Belva, Soraya e Lu (daugther of singer Carlos Jose and nephew of Luiz Claudio Ramos, which is a violonista and official Chico Buarque arranger). In the year of 1977 the group had a different name, "Quatro Cantos" and as far as I know, they did not released any recordings. I tried to produced a LP, with the help of Raymundo Bittencourt, but the girls had others name in mind -- the violonista Ary Sperling and the pianist Joao Reboucas -- their mentors at that time.

Later on, the group got new members - Ary Sperling (vocals) and Ronaldo (vocals) -- and changed their name to Viva Voz, with one album already available at Loronix. When Viva Voz terminated, the original girls of "Quatro Cantos" assembled Chovendo Na Roseira and lauched this first an only tribute album to Tom Jobim with Orchestra arrangements by Eduardo Souto Netto, also in charge of some vocal arrangements. The other arrangements are from Bia Paes Leme, which made a career as arranger after the end of Chovendo na Roseira.

In my opinion this album is wonderful, with highlights to the soprano voice of Lu (Luciana), the beautiful arrangement of Estrada do Sol, my favorite. I sure Loronixers will appreciate this album."

Thanks Carlos Braga!

Dick Farney – Dick Farney (1988)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 01 de agosto 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

This magnificent album features the last recordings of Dick Farney taken from a mix of concert and speech performed at MIS – Museu da Imagem e do Som, in Sao Paulo, 1987. Additionally, Dick Farney performs several songs, the songs that he like most to play, recorded at Dick Farney home by a friend, Cesar Pereira Lopes using a professional tape recorder. This record was not released commercially; it was part of a marketing initiative of a Brazilian company, Polibrasil, in the celebration of its 10th anniversary.
This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney (1988), for Polibrasil, a double album featuring a single track on disc one, side A, the last Dick Farney concert at MIS and remaining tracks the remastered home tapes recorded by Dick Farney at home through several sessions in 1975. Thanks once again Luiz Harding for sending this very hard to find album to our community, this is a very moving album for Dick Farney fans all around the world.

Tracks include:

01 – On The Sunny Side Of The Street (D. Fields / J. McHugh)
02 – Prelúdio Nº 20 de Chopin (Frederic Chopin)
03 – These Foolish Things (J. Stachey / H. Link / H. Marvell)
04 – You Go To My Head (H. Gillespie)

Zeca, acho que essa obra é póstuma! Inclusive no 2o LP, a voz do Dick é ouvida meio embargada, claudicante.

L.A. Transit - DeNovo (1986)

Here we go again on another international release provided by Caetano Rodrigues. Actually, I think this is not exactly International, let's say it is a mix of Brazilian and International musicians assembled as a group to release this album, by the way, very hard to track information at the internet. My searches always felt on Los Angeles Transit department. It does not matter much, the little I known about it is enough to urge Loronixers to go jump on it.

This is L.A. Transit - DeNovo (1986), for Interface (Japan). Taking a DJ vocabulary, I would say this is a nice lounge jazz elevator music vibe and groove music. I think is much more, it is such a party of renowned musicians, such as Oscar Castro Neves, Jose Marinho, Tom Scott, Gracinda Leporace, Paulinho da Costa, Alex Acunha and others, making a record for fun accompanied by a trio of female voices that really makes the difference. Check personnel and do not miss this one.

Tracks include:

Track List:

01 - Mas que Nada
02 - Wave
03 - Zazueira
04 - How Insensitive
05 - Muito Mais
06 - Agua de Beber
07 - Pretty World
08 - Anything can Happen
09 - Summer Without You
10 - Tristeza

Great choice! I've enjoyed this disc for years. I think the songs & musicians definitely trascend the glossy 1980's production values. This was apparently a collection of artists brought together especially for this recording. In case anyone cares, here are the songwriting credits for the 3 new songs:
Muito Mas: Regina Werneck/Yutaka Yokokura
Anything Can Happen: Kate Markowitz/John Vester/Daihachi Kojima
Summer Without You: Lani Hall!!!/Yutaka Yokokura

Hi, I was familiar with these Japanese guys and a story about this album. They are enthusiasts of brasilian music and wanted to create an album like Sergio Mendes without Sergio. Recently, Yutaka was touring around the world as a member or Sergio's "Timeless" band.
