Here we go on an album that I want to see at Loronix since the beginning. Thanks to tcisalpino for making it to our community using FLAC files to provide the best possible quality. This album was posthumously released in the year of 1997 by the label El Dorado and was recorded live at MAM, Museu de Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro. My searches were not successful to understand why we have to wait more than 20 years to have this record released. Anyway, it is not everyday an album is released featuring Luiz Eca and Victor Assis Brasil performing together. Let’s see.

This is Luiz Eca & Victor Assis Brasil – Ao Vivo no Museu de Arte Moderna (1997), for El Dorado, featuring Luiz Eca at the piano and Victor Assis Brasil at sax, performing a repertoire based on Brazilian and international standards. Definitively, this is not an album for beginners; you will have to take it for a spin several times before acquiring some intimacy. Sometimes Luiz Eca goes to a direction and Victor Assis Brasil seems to take the opposite, vice-versa. In 1997, Editora Globo released a series called “Historia do Samba”, very similar to “Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira” and “Serie Grandes Compositores”, released in the 70′s and already available at Loronix through a few editions.

This series has 40 volumes, each one with a CD inside. I have volumes 1 to 25, kindly sent by the mysterious Samba contributor a month ago. I decided to search for the remaining 15 volumes to start showing the whole series to Loronixers. However, it seems impossible to find these 15 missing volumes in the quality given by our mysterious contributor.

That’s why I decided that starting today, I will be releasing volumes from this series, making it by the reverse order, starting with number 25 until the last and first Volume. Meanwhile, I urge Loronixers to look for the missing volumes, so we can get the whole collection. Let’s see.

This is Os Grandes Sambas da Historia – Volume 25 (1997), for Editora Globo, featuring selected Samba songs performed by several artists. The mysterious contributor made it with truly amazing cover scans, including inside booklets with lyrics of each volume. Let’s feedback this release using comment section, I like very much this series.

I was looking for music from Brazil performed by someone from outside of Brazil, but I did not want some of those once in a lifetime Bossa Nova opportunistic performance. I was looking for an album featuring an international artist with tight connections with the music from Brazil, such like Toots Thielemans, Stan Getz and many others.
I’m amazed that this CD released in 1998 has gone out of print very soon, in the other hand, I’m really happy to share another record by Lani Hall, she has a solid connection with the music from Brazil and this album is very beautiful, featuring several Brazilian artists. Let’s see.

This is Lani Hall – Brasil Nativo (1998), for BMG. Lani Hall sings in English, Portuguese and on an Amazon language that it is impossible to identify with my knowledge on tracks 01 – Tres Curimins and 05 – Brasil Nativo. Dori Caymmi has a major participation from the start until the end as arranger, vocalist and guitar player. Herb Alpert, which is Lani Hall’s husband, also deliver trumpet playing and arrangements together with Paulinho da Costa, Michael Sapiro, Heitor Pereira, Jimmy Johnson, among many others.

Many tributes albums were released by the time of Jobim's passing and I'm sure this is one of the best ones. As a matter of fact, it is a Caetano Rodrigues selection to Loronixers who takes his peaks very seriously, specially as part of out tribute to Antonio Carlos Jobim. Let's check this delicious record.



This is Heirs to Jobim - A Musical Tribute (1997), for RCA, as an Amazon reviewer, Tom Jobim would be very proud of this tribute, featuring The New York Voices, Philip Hamilton, Lisa Ono, Joao Donato, Arto Lindsay, Randy Brecker Session, Flora Purim, Leon Russell, Gil Goldstein and Antonio Carlos Jobim, performing Estrada Branca with Lisa Ono.

I had the chance to hear this LP for the first time yesterday; I did not know what I was missing. I decided to post this album as the second of our tribute to show how this record surprises me. I don't know details of Manfredo Fest biography and his association to the works of Antonio Carlos Jobim, but the first thing that came on my mind yesterday was that I had in hands a sincere and emotive tribute to Tom Jobim made by a fan, a sincere admirer of the Maestro, so great is the repertoire and so wonderful is the interpretation and details on each song. Thanks for this LP Caetano, truly amazing.


This is Manfredo Fest - Just Jobim (1998), for DMP. On top of everything I said before, this is the last Manfredo Fest LP. I use to never put my personal opinion on records at Loronix and I will make an exception this time, run for it. Period. Some tracks are not well known Jobim works and belongs to a movie soundtrack that you will hear about today, stay tuned.

O manfredo fez um LP com seu trio que eu considero dos fundamentais

vocal e instrumental fantasticos. Acabou, como tantos outros, fazendo carreira nos EUA onde morreu. Deixou um herdeiro guitarrista que chegou a gravar com o pai. Vou assim que tiver, ouvir esse trabalho jobiniano dele.

Great idea!
Some great records like “Tom Canta Vinicius” and “Salena Jones sings Jobim with the Jobim's“.
A significant one “Orfeu da Conceicao” from 1956.
Side by side with the schmaltz of Doris Day and the unnecessary tribute from 1997.
If you can, I would like to hear more live albums and rarities…

M. Fest: I wonder - really really pray for! - any of the great Manfredo Fest albums for Concord Records in California, of the '80s and '90s. Unbelievably they're out of print. Anybody...?
