Joao Roberto Kelly e Luiz Reis - Samba a Quatro Maos (1964)

.
.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 27 de janeiro 2007.

When I took this LP for a hearing I did not realize how good it was. Like the Jazzman uses to say, do not walk to it, run. This is an enjoyable set of two pianists playing and singing Samba. People say that zecalouro uses to say that all records are Samba records while they are Bossa Nova, etc. Forgive-me if I'm wrong, but this LP is a Samba LP by definition.

This is Joao Roberto Kelly and Luiz Reis - Samba em Quatro Maos (1964), for RCA Victor (BBL 1270). Joao Roberto Kelly and Luiz Reis are pianists and composers and this is the difference on this LP that seams that was recorded on a very relaxed session with smiles on the face of both. I have been asking everybody about this LP and I could only hear people saying that it is a solid release, from start to end, don't miss it and join this selected club.

Tracks include:

01 - Cara de Pau (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
02 - Faço Um Lê-lelê (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) -- Gamação (João Roberto Kelly)
03 - Samba de Balanço (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) -- Pirata da Calçada (João Roberto Kelly)
04 - Leilão (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) -- Brotinho Bossa Nova (João Roberto Kelly)
05 - Lá Vou Eu (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
06 - Samba de Teleco-teco (João Roberto Kelly) -- Desfolhando a Margarida (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
07 - Só Vou de Balanço (João Roberto Kelly)
08 - Boato (João Roberto Kelly) -- Lamento Bibop (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
09 - Ciuminho (João Roberto Kelly)
10 - Sua Boca É Um Perigo (João Roberto Kelly) -- Samba do Trouxa (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
11 - Palhaçada (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) -- Zé da Conceição (João Roberto Kelly)
12 - Canequinho (Aloísio Silva Araújo / Luis Reis)

Conjunto OK - OK! Samba! (1964)

Incluido: Lamento de Peneira

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 23 de abril 2007.

It is crazy what is happening with this last Caetano Rodrigues set, several albums are some sorts of "collector dreams items". Actually, some of these albums are well know by collectors and Bossa Nova fans. I'm not talking about the music; the covers are well known to everybody available at the legendary sabadabada.com, bossa.net, auction sites, gemm and other places to go for Brazilian old vinyl’s.

Now it is time to get in touch with the music, great music not commercially available from decades that did not loose the strength and appeal of the many friends who loves the music from Brazil.

This is Conjunto OK - OK! Samba! (1964), for RGE (XRLP - 5259).
I need Quimsy guidance to describe the first and only Conjunto OK album. Walter Arid is in charge of Conjunto OK, the same Walter Arid we already know by Som Okey 5. Perhaps Som Okey 5 is the "evolution" of Conjunto OK. Pretty self-explanatory release that will make the day of those who like cool Brazilian funky grooves (I'm learning) Hammond B3 organ, trombones...

Tracks include:
Personnel

Walter Arid
(piano, organ)

Augusto
(drums)

Jair and Vieira
(percussion)

Ismael
(trombone)

Perez
(piston)

Epaminondas
(sax tenor, alto and flute)

Peri
(violao)

Clemente
(bass)

Nilton Siqueira
(vocal)

Track List

01 - Balanço do Mar (Zil Rosendo)
02 - Samba de Verão (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
03 - Borandá (Edu Lobo / Ruy Guerra)
04 - Soldadinho de Papel (Vica / Afonso Sarmento)
05 - Ainda Mais Lindo (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
06 - Atmosfera (Dizzy Gillespie)
07 - Consolação (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
08 - Trombone Triste (J. Venceslau Neto)
09 - E Vem o Sol (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)

Hello, good evening! I use to follow a classification of the music made available at Loronix, this is important to address several audiences. We have instrumental music, Choro, Samba, Para Dancar, MPB, singers, divas, orchestra among others.

This is the first orchestra album made available in 2008 and it is a repost of an early contribution of the mighty Caetano Rodrigues. Actually, I thought it was not a repost, since both covers are really different, being the second one by Caetano Rodrigues and the first by zecalouro.

I think Caetano’s cover is the best one and so far I did not understand why Odeon released both covers. I’m making the original text written in January 2008. Let’s see.

Wow! A Sunday of Caetano’s contribution and now a really different Samba with orchestra LP. I appreciate the LPs with Samba rhythms and orchestra arrangements. Maestro Portinho is the one that deliver the best results in my opinion. I will never forget a release available at Loronix with
Portinho making a Tribute to Noel Rosa, a perfect example of Samba with Orchestra.
Let’s see what Caetano shows now to Loronixers.

This is Os Sambistas da Guanabara – Show de Samba Volume 2 (1964), Odeon SMOFB 3388. In spite of this breathtaking cover artwork, that takes me several samples to achieve a great result, this LP is more oriented to what is used to call as the Samba made by the “Malandros”, hard to explain in English, so I will ask the help of Wikipedia to define it. The music is different in terms of the highlight given to specific percussion instruments, such as: tamborim, pandeiro, reco-reco, cuica, etc. including some solos. Take a look at the Malandro definition, just bellow.

Tracks include:

Malandragem is a Brazilian Portuguese term for the Bohemian lifestyle – an ethos of idleness, fast living and petty crime – traditionally celebrated in samba lyrics. The exponent of this lifestyle, the malandro, has become significant to Brazilian national identity as a folk hero. Constantly present in Brazilian literature, besides other arts such as cinema and music, the malandro resembles the Italian Picaro, but, differently from this, he has a more criminal character, and frequently sees his espertos (Portuguese for smart) actions not working as expected.

01 – Bigorrilho (Sebastião Gomes / Paquito / Romeu Gentil)
02 – Falsa Baiana (Geraldo Pereira)
03 – Sa-saruê (Marino Pinto / Pernambuco)
04 – Eu Não Tenho Onde Morar (Dorival Caymmi)
05 – Provei (Noel Rosa / Vadico)
06 – Sal e Pimenta (Nazareno de Brito / Newton Ramalho)
07 – Berimbau (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
08 – Miss Balanço (Hélton Menezes)
09 – Mas Que Nada (Jorge Ben “Jorge Benjor”)
10 – Implorar (Kid Pepe / Germano Augusto / Gaspar)
11 – Está Nascendo Um Samba (Tito Madi / Romeo Nunes)
12 – O Orvalho Vem Caindo (Noel Rosa / Kid Pepe)

Grande disco! Adorei! )
Show!

Os Cinco-Pados – Os Cinco-Pados (1964)

.
.

When we start thinking that there will be no more surprises it is the announcement that more surprises will come.

Os Cinco-Pados, an instrumental BossaJazz Combo from the early 60’s, probably 1964, which is Heraldo do Monte (guitar), Hector Costita (sax), Buda (trumpet), Arrundinha (drums) and Gabriel Bhalis (bass).

A very early Heraldo do Monte is making one of his first recording appearances at this LP as band leader, making this LP unique for the many fans of this renowned guitarist.

This is probably the only record from this nice group, once again, zecalouro praises for Loronixers help to gather more info about Os Cinco-Pados and this awesome LP, which had a reissue in 2002, going out of print again since then.

Various Artists - Bossa 12 Vezes (1965)

.
.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 03 de janeiro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos

Here is another cool record sent by Caetano Rodrigues to Loronixers, Bossa 12 Vezes (1965), for Farroupilha, mixing four different artists - really different - on a single LP, featuring, Jongo Trio, Leny Eversong, Conjunto Farroupilha and Bobby Mackay (completely unknown to zecalouro). Refer, if you can assist us on Bobby Mackay, we appreciate.

Have you ever stop to think how many good records were released in 1965? What a year! I like statistics and I think that it would be very interest if someone makes to Loronixers some kind of Loronix albums per year chart. I'm quite sure that we will see 1965 taking the lead over the other years.

Tracks include:

01 - A Resposta (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle) - Conjunto Farroupilhas
02 - Aleluia (Edu Lobo / Ruy Guerra) - Leny Eversong
03 - Seu Chopin Desculpe (Johnny Alf) - Jongo Trio
04 - Bossa Nova (I Say) (B. Mackay / J. Bradford) - Bobby Mackay
05 - Samba Internacional (Sidney Morais) - Conjunto Farroupilhas
06 - Arrastão (Edu Lobo / Vinicius de Moraes) - Leny Eversong
07 - Ela Vai Ela Vem (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli) - Jongo Trio
08 - Cool Cool Samba (J. Bradford / R. Simpson) - Bobby Mackay
09 - Rio Rio (Francisco de Assis Bezerra de Menezes) - Conjunto Farroupilhas
10 - Gangazuma (Carlos Cruz / Almeida Rego) - Leny Eversong
11 - Garota Moderna (Evaldo Gouveia / Jair Amorim) - Jongo Trio
12 - The Girl From Sout Zone (Balanço Zona Sul) (Tito Madi / Vrs. B. Mackay / Vrs. D. Gordon) - Bobby Mackay

Obrigado.
Gostou da bolacha?
Abraços, zeca

Zeca,
Assim, o rubor me queima a cara e a vaidade pulsa...
Quem sabe, exista algum material gravado disso... (?)

Hello, Good Evening! Let’s start with a very successful formula, which is Bossa Nova recorded outside of Brazil by an international artist. Actually, I cannot understand why I did not release this one earlier, it is among my favorites in the style. Let’s see what happens?

This is Ramsey Lewis Trio – Bossa Nova (1962), for Argo, also featuring the Brazilian singer Carmen Costa and Josef(?) Paulo, which is probably the Brazilian singer Jose Paulo that were with Carmen Costa and the constellation of Bossa Nova legends at Carnegie Hall first Bossa Nova US concert in 1963.

Ramsey Lewis Trio is Ramsey Lewis (piano),
Eldee Young (bass) and Redd Holt (drums), delivering a nice job, really above the averege of the very beginning US Bossa Nova albums.

Tracks include:

01 – Samba de Orfeu
02 – Manhã de Carnaval
03 – As Criancinhas
04 – A Noite do Meu Bem
05 – O Pato
06 – A Felicidade
07 – Whirpoll

Incluida: pequena biografia do artista

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 11 de novembro 2006

Remember that LP that made a great noise about the color of the cover? Conjunto Carcara – Barra Limpa, the one with two chicken at the cover with a blue background, in fact red, it was changed by the friend who made the rip for fun, to see where the record would reach after time.

This release has in common with Conjunto Carcara the is that both are from the mysterious record label Paladium from Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Kindly sent by Trix, this is Hugo Luiz – Hugo Luiz, seu Violao e Ritmo, Bossa Hugo (196?), Paladium.

Believe me, really obscure. I started a small quest with Trix to gather information about Hugo Luiz, unfortunately, no success. Anyway, if someone has additional information about Hugo Luiz, please let us know.

The last Festival da Balanca release was nice and useful to remember an important instrumental combom from the 60’s that did not have a single release at Loronix.

Conjunto 3D, is also known as Trio 3D. Conjunto 3-D – Tema 3-D (1964), for RCA is the debut LP, followed by Trio 3-D Convida and Muito na Onda, the last one with Eduardo Conde and Beth Carvalho on vocals.

Antonio Adolfo (piano) is Conjunto 3-D leader, listed on set of all three releases.

Tema 3-D, has Antonio Adolfo (piano and arrangements), Cacho (bass and vocals on tracks 04 and 10), Nelson (drums). Adittionaly Tema 3-D has Arisio (acoustic guitar), Claudio (piston on tracks 02, 04 and 09), Dom Um Romao (drums on tracks 01, 09, 10, 11 and 12).
A perfect cover and always welcomed Bossa Jazz classic for a great day closing.

Trio 3-D - O Trio 3-D Convida (1965)

.
.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 22 de novembro 2006.
Comentários originais incluídos.

This record is really great, my only problem is the cover with these armed military men, but this is a minor issue. Just to remember, the first Trio 3-D release at Loronix was that one with the guys standing at the keyboard of a giant piano, all black with Trio 3-D on a yellow and very modern typeface. Actually, I'm never 100% happy.

Anyway, it is Trio 3-D, instrumental Bossa Jazz from the 60's with the LP Trio 3-D - O Trio 3-D Convida (1965), for RCA. Trio 3-D at this released is:

Antônio Adolfo (piano)
Carlinhos Monjardin (bass)
Nelsinho (drums).

But what make this LP different are the special guests:
Raul de Barros (trombone)
Ed. Maciel (trombone)
Paulo Moura (sax alto)
Meirelles (Sax tenor).

The arrangements are from Trio 3-D leader, Antonio Adolfo, the exceptions are tracks 7 and 12, arranged by Eumir Deodato.

Tracks include:

01 - Água de Beber (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 - My Heart Stood Still (Lorenz Hart / Richard Rogers)
03 - Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
04 - Tamanco no Samba (Orlann Divo / Hélton Menezes)
05 - Reza (Edu Lobo / Ruy Guerra)
06 - Batucada Surgiu (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
07 - Só Tinha de Ser Com Você (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
08 - Minha Namorada (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
09 - Tema 3-d (Antônio Adolfo)
10 - Bye Bye Blackbird (Hay Anderson)
11 - O Passarinho (Chico Feitosa / Luis Fernando Freire)
12 - Peter Samba (Durval Ferreira / Maurício Einhorn

I cannot make a whole new package right now, only tomorrow morning. A replacement for track one is available, may you try it again?
Cheers, zecalouro

NELSINHO (BATERISTA) um show a parte.

I also can’t get the file to unzip — it stalls on track 1.

Excellent! One of the best albums from the golden era of instrumental Bossa Nova! Thank you very much.
Jose Garcia.

Gene Ammons – Bad! Bossa Nova (1962)

.
.

Eugene “Jug” Ammons (saxophonist) was born on April 14, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois and passed away on July 23, 1974 in Chicago, Illinois at the age of 49.

Ammons developed a playing style that was initially inspired by Lester Young. This style alternately featured strong powerful playing punctuated with sharp bursts or “honks” and low, deep notes while playing ballads. Ammons played a rich, soulful music overlaid with an aggressive attack – a style that moved him towards the outer edges of the bop tradition yet never quite slipped over into fully fledged soul or R&B. Ammons enjoyed considerable success thanks in part to his enthusiastic playing and the concurrent popularity of jazz soul music throughout the 60s.

Besides co-leading a two tenor group in the early ’50s with Sonny Stitt, Ammons worked as a single throughout his career, recording frequently in settings ranging from quartets and organ combos to all-star jam sessions. Drug problems kept him in prison during much of 1958-1960 and, due to a particularly stiff sentence, 1962-1969.

When Ammons returned to the scene in 1969, he opened up his style a bit, including some of the emotional cries of the avant-garde while utilizing funky rhythm sections, but he was still able to battle Sonny Stitt on his own terms. Ironically, the last song that he ever recorded (just a short time before he was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 1974) was “Goodbye.”

Joni James - Bossa Nova Style (1965)

.
.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 06 de março 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Here we go again with another release sponsored by Caetano Rodrigues, The Great. Caetano presents this time a female singer and I'm very confident that this post will be a treat for many Loronixers. It was a surprise to see the tremendous feedback given to Pat Thomas and I hope that Joni James hits the same honors gave by Loronixers to Pat Thomas. Let's check another Caetano's gem.

This is Joni James - Bossa Nova Style (1965), for MGM. Hearing Joni James, I sure that you will remember the anthological Julie is her Name, by Julie London. Joni James seems to be from the same school and her interpretation of Bossa Nova is really different. I like Joni James singing and this is a very pleasant LP. Thanks for this one Caetano.

Tracks include:

01 - Dindi
02 - I Could Have Danced All Night
03 - September Song
04 - My Foolish Heart
05 - I Wish You Love
06 - While We're Young
07 - I Understand
08 - The Girl from Ipanema
09 - Guilty
10 - Once I Loved
11 - My Romance
12 - You're Nearer

Very classy. I really appreciate your presentation of international bossa nova releases. I find an outsider's perspective on the genre fascinating, illuminating and, even sometimes, amusing. But always entertaining, never boring. Keep up the great work!
PS I would like to share my Isabelle Aubret, Helen Merrill, Morricone, Gimmicks etc files in the future.

Friends,
I'm happy that you were thrilled by Joni James. Each new international release from Caetano is also a treat to me. The challenge is to write info from artists and music that I'm not used.
Cheers, zeca

Zecalouro:
