Tânia Maria – Apresentamos Tania Maria (1966)

Some of Loronix friends says that this is a late release, but I think, after more than 400 releases the timing is good to present Tania Maria – Apresentamos Tania Maria (1966), for Continental.

I’m not sure if it is Tania’s debut LP, but it is a very early release of this Brazilian singer, active through three decades since she started with the age of 13 encouraged by her father, also musician.

Tania Maria is also a pianist, building an active career outside Brazil, being recognized as a Jazz singer on several countries and by renowned musicians such like Charlie Byrd.

Tania Maria
piano e voz

Neco
guitar

Luis Marinho

Once again Edison Machado show us that he is the real *samba* drummer.

This was her first album. Wonderful! I’ve wanted this forever and could never find it.
I think she made one more in Brasil before she moved to France.

I also look for Para Dancar Vol.2,
but as far as I know, Para Dancar
came after Apresentamos Tania Maria and is her 2nd album.

Frank, Arara, Friends,

This is the first Tania Maria LP:
PARA DANÇAR – VOL. 2 – Tânia Maria e Seu Conjunto (1963) Entré/CBS 4013
Para Dancar Vol. 2 is Tania Maria as band leader, not as solo. Anyway, it is only a matter of criteria. I will agree with my friends. :-)
Cheers, zecalouro

Wow! I attend to a Tania Maria concert in Spain a couple of years ago, and I bought her CD “Viva Brasil”.

Glad to see here her first solo LP. [Downloading, downloading!]
Thanks a lot, Zecalouro!

Stan Getz – Stan Getz with Guest Artist Laurindo Almeida (1963)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 21 de abril 2007.

Caetano sent this album as part of his latest package of treasures to Loronixers and I need to say open and honestly it was the first time I had the chance to hear this classical record.

Among the several things I could learn with Loronix, a important one is to consider Stan Getz as a Brazilian artist, such tremendous was his dedication to Brazilian music and the work he made to “announce” the great new from Brazil in the early 60′s, the Bossa Nova.

This is Stan Getz – Stan Getz with Guest Artist Laurindo Almeida (1963), for Verve. This is a really amazing album and I think I cannot make better than Richard Ginell from All Music to describe this session and what was in the air during those years.

Personnel includes another surprise, Edison Machado on Drums.

AMG Review:

Three weeks after completing his meeting with Luiz Bonfá and only two days after the epochal Getz/Gilberto sessions, Stan Getz was back in the studio recording more bossa nova. Producer Creed Taylor was obviously striking while the iron was hot, getting in as many Brazilian sessions as he could, yet the quality of the music-making remained consistently marvelous.

Continuing his practice of running through one star guitarist after another, this time Getz has Laurindo Almeida as the designated rhythm man, featured composer, and solo foil. The rhythm section is an authentically swinging mixture of American sidemen (including Steve Kuhn on piano and George Duvivier on bass) and Brazilian percussionists. Almeida didn’t like to improvise, so his solos stay close to the tunes, inflected with a perfectly matched feeling for the groove along with classical poise. Jobim’s “Outra Vez” is a particularly lovely example of Getz’s freedom and effortless lyricism contrasted against Almeida’s anchored embroidering.

Sessions like these might have been seen as cashing in on the boom at the time, yet in the long view, one should be thankful that these musicians were recording so much cherishable material.

Personnel:

Edison Machado

 Luis Parga
Jose Paulo
(percussion)

 George Duvivier
Dave Bailey

 Steve Kuhn

 Laurindo Almeida

 Stan Getz

Track List

01 – Menina Moça (Young Lady) (Luis Antônio)
02 – Outra Vez (Once Again) (Tom Jobim)
03 – Winter Moon (Laurindo de Almeida / Portia Nelson)
04 – Do What You Do Do (Laurindo de Almeida / Jeanne Taylor)
05 – Samba da Sahra (Sahra’s Samba) (Laurindo de Almeida)

07 – Corcovado (Tom Jobim)

Cooool! I love this version of Outra Vez. To me, Getz & Jobim are two sides of the same coin: seemingly simple, however deeply profound.
I recommend Viva Bossa Nova & Ole Bossa Nova, 2 more albums where Almeida plays with American musicians. His A Man and A Woman LP is pretty great as well.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful music.

Agostinho dos Santos – Agostinho dos Santos (1973)

.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 10 de outubro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

This is the last album recorded by Agostinho dos Santos before his passing in 1973 at a flight accident close to Orly Airport in Paris, France. When I took this album for a spin a couple of days ago, I could understand why Agostinho dos Santos receives wonderful acknowledgements by reviewers and fans after decades of his passing.

This album brings a mature singer, performing definitive renditions of well-known Brazilian standards. It is disappointing that we did not have the chance to know what Agostinho dos Santos would be if he did not take that flight.

This is Agostinho dos Santos – Agostinho dos Santos (1973), for Continental. I’m really proud on making this album available to our community; everybody was tracking it down for months. Agostinho makes something that would be a norm, instead of an exception; he introduces musicians, one by one at the beginning and then delivers a fantastic singing on top of a very nice repertoire. Side A features four tracks, being the last one a medley, while side B brings standard six tunes with arrangements by Maestro Luiz Arruda Paes. I’m not sure if the musicians introduced in the beginning take also part on side B. Anyway, it will be easy to know. Edison Machado play drums and Luiz Harding can identify his playing on side B tracks.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Edison Machado
(drums)

Guilherme Rodrigues
(flute)

Guilherme Vergueiro
(piano)

Ion Muniz
(sax, flute)

Ricardo dos Santos
(bass)

Luiz Arruda Paes
(arrangements, side B)

Track List

01 – A Felicidade (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 – Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Estrada do Sol (Tom Jobim / Dolores Duran)
04 – Manhã de Carnaval (Luis Bonfá / Antônio Maria) Lamentos do Morro (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes) Samba de Orfeu (Luis Bonfá / Tom Jobim) O Nosso Amor (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
05 – Paz Sem Cor (Agostinho dos Santos / Nancy dos Santos)
06 – O Amor Está no Ar (Agostinho dos Santos / Joab Teixeira)
07 – Dindi (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
08 – Foi a Noite (Tom Jobim / Newton Mendonça)
09 – Céu e Mar (Johnny Alf)
10 – Sin Palabras (Mariano Mores / Enrique Santos Discépolo)

Zecalouro is the best.

From now on, I will announce my future plans at Loronix, such as I did a couple of days ago. I said I was looking for high quality media of some essential records already available at Loronix.

The response came very fast this time, tcisalpino is the fast fish; he read my comment and decided to please our community with FLAC files, the second contribution in the new format. tcisalpino says that RIO 65 Trio is a present to our community. Let’s thanks him.

This is Rio 65 Trio – Rio 65 Trio (1965), for Philips, one of the greatest Samba Jazz album ever recorded featuring Dom Salvador, Edison Machado and Sergio Barroso. Do I need to say more? I don’t think so. This is the kind of album I would select to stay in the front page when leaving to a vacation. Thanks once again tcisalpino. Friends who are new to our community, don’t think twice, this album should be listed on every serious list of top records of any kind.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Dom Salvador
(piano)
Edison Machado
(drums)
Sergio Barroso
(bass)

Track List

01 – Meu Fraco é Café Forte (Dom Salvador)
02 – Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sérgio Valle)
03 – Farjuto (Dom Salvador)

This is the CD edition which was released some years ago in Brazil. The problem is, that track 11. “Aruanda” is missing:
A faixa “Aruanda”, presente no repertório do LP, não foi autorizada por seu autor – Geraldo Vandre -a figurar no CD.
But this track was also used for the soundtrack LP “Cronica da Cidade Amada” which was also posted on the Loronix site in 2006.
So, to get the original LP order you have to take this track from the soundtrack as track 11.

My hope is to get the vinyl first issue to make this missing track and update this post with an equivalent quality.
I think I can make it in a few days, stay tuned.

Sergio Mendes – Quiet Nights (1963)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 13 de setembro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

This is a special repost of one of the greatest accomplishes of Loronix. It is also a tribute to our friend Caetano Rodrigues, a great friend of mine that I could only have the chance to meet through our community. For those who does not know who is Caetano Rodrigues, he is just the greatest Bossa Nova LP collector in Brazil, blessing Loronix on an on-going basis with albums from his personal collection.
I said before and I want to say it again, Caetano’s contribution to our community is such like a once in a lifetime opportunity and this post is to make people understand – specially the new Loronixers – why Caetano is so important to Loronix by making his whole collection available to us to the love he has to the music from Brazil and the great sympath to our website.

This is Sergio Mendes – Quiet Nights (1968), for Philips, one of the rarest Bossa Nova albums, never made available in CD. As I said, Quiet Night is being reposted to homage Caetano and also to address major improvements cover artworks, MP3 files with higher bitrate and the now popular FLAC looseless alternative. I’m keeping original post information adding personnel info, which is still uncertain after months.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Sergio Mendes
(piano)

David Pike
(vibes)

Eddie Higgins
(vibes on Insensatez)

unknown
(guitar)

Sebastiao Neto
(bass)

Chico Batera or Edison Machado
(drums)

I decided to make a chronological approach showing excerpts from conversations made until this publishing, as follows:

The first citation from Bossanov, the starter of this post:
August, 28th, 2006 – “Do you have some of the most mysterious Sergio opus – LP Quiet Nights (Philips, 1967 in my opinion or 1963 as mighty www.allmusic.com insist?)?”

Frank Oliver Hellmann introduces the mysteries that surrounds this release:

August, 29th, 2006 – “The Quiet Nights album was recorded 1963 or 1964 in USA and was released by Philips not before 1967, after the success of Brazil 66. It has Dave Pike on vibes, Tiao Neto on bass and Chico Batera on drums. It was produced by Eddie Higgins who replaces Pike on one track. The guitar player is not known, but possibly it is Rosinha de Valenca. I have the original LP, this is a great record (real instrumental Bossa Nova) and the only one which is not reissued in CD yet.” zecalouro’s note: I decided to do not push our friend Oliver to get the LP, just to keep the discussion live!

Caetano Rodrigues shows a real excitement about Quiet Nights:

“This LP was not released in Brazil and was recorded in the USA, February, 1963, just before the anthological Carnegie Hall Show. This LP is FANTASTIC with Sergio backed up by Dave Pike. Eddie Higgins was invited by Dave Pike to play vibes on Insensatez, since Dave was unfamiliar with the harmony. The bass player was Tiao Neto, drumming is credited to Chico Batera. I spoke with Chico Batera to bring more clarification about this LP and Chico said that he did take part at the recording session and is quite sure that Edison Machado did it. The guitar player is still unknown. Hearing the acoustic guitar, it seems that Oscar Castro Neves or even Antonio Carlos Jobim would be playing.”

zecalouro reads today at BJBear71, complimentary information provided by Frank Oliver:

“Pianist Eddie Higgins was working in the recording booth at this session. Dave Pike had been playing vibes during the session but was unfamiliar with the melody for “Insensatez.” The group was running out of studio time, so Higgins started the tape and ran out into the studio and played vibes on this one track. The group was Sergio Mendes’ Brasil ’65. Another track in the album, “Abraco a Sergio,” was composed by Higgins and played by Mendes. The guitar player is unknown but it might be Rosinha de Valenca who was working with Mendes’ Brasil 65. The record was issued in 1967, but was recorded November 1964 or 1965. An interesting note about the session is that Mendes was brought in to record some background music for the Seeburg Company and was VERY upset when Philips put it out later as an album. That was not supposed to happen.”

Take your own conclusions. Some mysteries are still to be revealed. Take your time to discuss at Loronix Forum with our peers about this LP. Together, we can have all the answers revealed.

Before you run away to get the LP, please send your virtual compliments to Caetano Rodrigues who provided this record without noticing, just reading those initial comments from Bossanov and Frank Oliver. Thanks Caetano for another strike, our community should acclaim Quiet Nights.

So, it’s really misterious record!
My another wish was the Bill Perkins “Bossanova wis strings attached” from Liberty. Some tracks from this record was in Capitol compilations, like “Bossanovaville” and this is great music, comparable with Getz bossa LPs.

The date November 1967 is wrong. In 1967 Mendes was recording with Brasil 66, when you here this recording it clearly sounds like 1963/1964. I got my informations about the recording from the discographer of Eddie Higgins who spoke directly to Eddie Higgins. These are the things Eddie remembers about the session. If a good looking woman like Rosinha de Valenca or Jobim himself plays the guitar he would remember this. Perhaps Oscar Castro-Neves is the right choice.
The man who must know all these things is Sergio Mendes himself. Unfortunaly I didn´t know his e-mail address.

Yes, this would not be the first time I have come across a mistake in a print discography book, as great as Ruppli’s work is. Also, why would a Philips label recording be listed in a Mercury discography?! This makes no sense to me, they are totally unrelated labels back then in the 1960s. The *only* way this could have been recorded in 1967 is if Sergio stilled owed Phillips an album under previous contractual obligations and therefore was bound to record it to fulfill that obligation. Sergio was well into recording for A&M in 1967…

Thank you Caetano!
Thank you Zeca!
Now I will unveil the great mystery of who is the guitarist.
Actually, it is not a mystery at all, if you are a guitarist who has listened to as much brazilian music as I have.
This is a ‘slam dunk’ – Oscar Castro-Neves.
I saw him a couple of weeks ago in San Francisco, before I read this blog, unfortunately, or I would have asked him to confirm this point.
However, simply listen to the tracks – especially ‘O Peixe’ (intro) or ‘Corcovado’, etc. – and then listen to any of Oscar Castro-Neves documented recordings carefully.
Perhaps the most identifying feature of Oscar’s playing his his damping technique – this, to me, is unmistakable – Rosinha de Valenca, Baden Powell, etc. have a different sound. Oscar is very, very ‘tight’ in the way he damps strings in between chords.
Also, Oscar’s chord voicings are quite characteristic and his rhythm is absolutely unmistakable.
So you have it!
Thanks again,
