Hello, good evening! In the year of 1978, RCA released a tribute album in honor of Bossa Nova 20th year’s anniversary, “Velha” Bossa Nova, featuring musicians from RCA cast or from the record labels later acquired or merged by or with RCA. This is the short intro of one of the best compilations I have heard in decades. Believe me?
Let’s see.

This is “Velha” Bossa Nova (1978), for RCA Candem, from now, the album to use as the perfect introduction for those who want to know Bossa Nova on a single spin.

I made some scans with relevant information about each track, including performer and year of recording. This album should guarantee a solid listing across this weekend.

Sebastiao Tapajos is a gifted musician. He has a classical background and started with his instrument at the age of nine, encouraged by his own father, being also his first teacher. His classical training and interest in popular music defined his style by a blend of the two schools, providing a transparent connection between the classical and popular. Sebastiao Tapajos has close to 50 albums recorded, in Brazil and outside. 

However, most of his discography is still unknown to me, his albums are hard to find, especially those recorded on vinyl and who never had a chance of a reprint on CD. Violao & Amigos is a great find.
Let’s see.

This is Sebastiao Tapajos – Violao & Amigos (1979), for RCA Victor, with the participation of Hermeto Pascoal, Paulo Moura and Mauricio Einhorn. I found this one a week ago, being sold for a ridiculous price. Since then, he has been constantly spinned. I was not able to accomplish an acceptable back cover restoration; being offered in the state it was found. I think this is a rather unknown record and I’m confident that our community will receive it with enthusiasm.

Someone said here a great thing about Hermeto Pascoal, it was a Loronixer, I cannot remember whom. He said Hermeto was the real Brazilian music ambassador, it is a very nice statement and I totally agree.

AdHoc, the frequent FLAC contributor sent this album in a very good timing, taking advantage of the last Airto Moreira post with participation of Hermeto Pascoal.

This is Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo – Lagoa da Canoa, Municipio de Arapiraca (1984), for Som da Gente, featuring Hermeto Pascoal and the constellation of top-notch musicians assembled as “Grupo”, which is Hermeto Pascoal as I like most.

AdHoc sent to us a 1992 CD reissue with a different cover and some additional tracks not included in the first vinyl issue. I can’t decide which cover I like most; Hermeto Pascoal photos are always amazing.

What a nice album, it was a surprise to hear 04 – Papagaio Alegre with Hermeto e Grupo making on recording something that I use to do with zecalouro for leisure; they mix a parrot talking with the music. I’m thinking about recording some cuts with zecalouro to show Loronixers. Meanwhile, stay with this truly amazing Lagoa da Canoa, Municipio de Arapicara, which is the name of city where Hermeto Pascoal was born (Lagoa da Canoa), later changed to Municipio de Arapiraca.

This is a recording session that I would like to take part. No matter what doing there, serving coffee, shining shoes, whatever.

We have here the first album recorded by Airto Moreira in US, featuring Flora Purim, Hermeto Pascoal, Sivuca, Ron Carter and Gary McFarland as producer, a constellation of top-notch musicians at their peak. And the most incredible fact about this album, Natural Feelings never had a CD reissue, as far as I could search. Let’s see.

This is Airto Moreira – Natural Feelings (1970), for Buddah Records. It is nice to see the back cover with recording session photos showing Hermeto Pascoal and Sivuca on a very young age. Hermeto had a short hair and I would not recognize him. This cover artwork is also amazing and it is provided with a very nice scan, you will spend several minutes navigating on each detail. I’m not versed on Airto Moreira discography, and if the other records he made are such like this one, it really worth to start a series on Airto Moreira. Anyway, I will let you with this surprisingly album.

Nice album, but it has indeed been released on CD — several times, although they may all be out of print. The version I have on One Way Records is called Seeds in the Ground, a shoddily packaged twofer of Airto’s first two solo albums. The same tracks appear on the CD called The Essential Airto, but with the Natural Feelings front cover. I’ve also seen a Japanese CD of Natural Feelings on its own.

Looking forward to hearing this one. Reason being i have a DVD of Miles Davis at the Isle of Wight 1970 (do a search on youtube.com) and Airto Moreira is playing with him there.
Heady times, by the looks of things. MD, and jazz itself, had the US psychedelic rock scene to contend with.
Personally, it’s my favourate period of Miles Davis. When MD went electric and his sound was young, hip and improvised to themes.
Crazy stuff. He used to employ the best, most hipist, young talent. And Airto Moreira was right there.
Highly recommend it if u can get hold of it.
So, yes, very curious to hear this one.

What a fantastic album!! There’s actually been two cd editions of this, one japanese digipack last year and another one from a few years back that combined his second album for Skye, “Seeds On The Ground”(That you really should also post because it’s tremendous!!). Anyway, they’re both almost impossible to find and you’ve done yet another tremendous job!! Thank you for your contribution to great music and your fabulous site!!

It has been a very long time since we made the last album by Sivuca, I’m not taking in consideration his last release with Rildo Hora, I’m talking about a Sivuca career album as main performer.

Sivuca is all about Loronix and people always give nice feedback on his music. I think this album will take everybody by surprise, I took a lot of time digging the back cover to find the name of the guy who sings throughout the record and for my surprise, Sivuca sings lyrics and he makes it very beautiful. I hope people get pleased on hearing Sivuca again as I was today.

This is Sivuca – Sivuca (1979), for Copacabana, a great session with the atmosphere of being recorded like a friend’s rehearsal. Sivuca has some special guests of note, such as Hermeto Pascoal on tracks Nosso Encontro and Sambura de Peixe Miudo, Glorinha Gadelha, which is Sivuca’s wife also takes part at Joao e Maria, Doce Doce and Sambura de Peixe Miudo. Remaining musicians are not credit, but the back cover brings session pictures with Katia de Franca, Ivan Machado, Claudio Jorge, Ze Carlos and Teo Lima on Drums.

Here we go on the continuation of a very old idea of showing Loronixers live Hermeto Pascoal performances, which are the ones that Hermeto Pascoal really shines, improvises and makes reharmonization of themes he played on official CDs and LPs. By the way, Hermeto Pascoal used to urge the audiences to record his live performances and spread the tapes, in an attempt to overcome the indifference of recording companies to his music.Hermeto send green lights to promote his live performances, Loronix and this green board is very proud of doing it.
This is Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo – Le Petit Journal, Montparnasse, Paris (1990). Little is known about this concert, except we have CD quality audio and 94 minutes of music, with Hermeto playing piano, sax, percussion and synthesizers, accompanied by O Grupo on nine tracks, some of them not identified. I hope you enjoy this Hermeto Pascoal concert, one of the great Brazilian music ambassadors.

When deciding the posts of the day, in the beginning of the night, or with Caetano Rodrigues after 8 PM (most cases), it is very important to keep in mind some pitfalls, you cannot post four instrumental albums on a single day, or two female singers together and many other different criteria you have to manage. This is the reason some friends get mad when I meant to do something and the outcome is completely different. Caetano is an example, we just finished a phone call with a plan and now I'm here - ten minutes later - showing something different to Loronixers. I hope you trust me on my selections.

This is Silvio Cesar - Silvio Cesar (1983), for Independente Musica, which is probably the record with the greatest personnel list ever at Loronix, featuring Geraldo Vespar, Sergio Carvalho, Wilson das Neves, Chico Batera, Rafael Rabello, Orlann Divo, Hermeto Pascoal and others. I have been receiving many requests from new Loronixers to repost this great LP recorded by Elis Regina and Hermeto Pascoal in Montreux Jazz Festival, 1979. Here is the new chance. I will keep the original post info by zecalouro. Do not miss the wonderful album review written by Stefan Sittig.

Let's close the Brazilian Divas pool acclaiming the winner, Elis Regina. This LP was recorded in 1979, Montreux Jazz Festival with Hermeto Pascoal. The album was kept unreleased until 1982 and it is a unique Elis Performance that zecalouro is making available to Loronixers.


zecalouro can’t make it better than the review wrote by Stefan Sittig at Amazon, as follows:

   This LP captures Elis's brilliant performance at the 1979 Montreux Jazz Festival. The reason the album had not previously been released is because ticket sales had been so huge for Elis's show in Montreux, that the producers decided to add a matinee the same day of the evening show. Elis performed at the matinee, knocked them dead, but then lost steam for the evening show. She was tired, feeling wiped out from giving her all in the afternoon. Although Elis did get through the entire concert and at the end of that evening's performance, she was invited back on stage by Hermeto Pascoal to do some jamming sessions. Feeling perhaps revitalized, or more relaxed since the concert itself was over, Elis gave it her all and gave brilliant/improvisational renditions of classics of Bossa Nova, like "Corcovado", "Girl From Ipanema" and others. And Elis left the festival feeling at least vindicated for having sung well at the improv session with Pascoal.


But she was unhappy with the evening show, it wasn't good enough for Elis and she had her record producer promise never to release that concert live.


But 2 years later, after Elis had died, the record producer realized that they had also taped the afternoon show which had been wonderful! He then felt he must somewhat betray Elis's trust and find the master tapes for that stunning afternoon performance.


Well, he did and that, together with the improv/jam session with Pascoal, are what have been included in this latest CD release. And let me tell you, what a JOYOUS sound Elis produces, all the tracks are excellent, really, there are no stand-outs, all are uniformly brilliant.


Perhaps her jam session with Pascoal will be the most interesting section for her faithful, longtime fans, because she interprets classics in a totally new way. I can't think of another singer, except for perhaps Ella Fitzgerald, who could improv/scat/jam as well as Elis does in the session with Pascoal.


Pure brilliance, and a must-have for fans.

Existem duas versões do disco, não tenho certeza se a versão que estava no Loronix é exatamente a que está no Um que Tenha. Pela capa que consegui na Internet Wayback Machine, é ela mesmo. Trata-se da versão européia, lançada em CD em 1996. A versão foi lançada em 1982, em LP, e relançada no CD europeu de 1996, com 9 músicas:

Let's close the Brazilian Divas pool acclaiming the winner, Elis Regina. This LP was recorded in 1979, Montreux Jazz Festival with Hermeto Pascoal. The album was kept unreleased until 1982 and it is a unique Elis Performance that zecalouro is making available to Loronixers.



zecalouro can’t make it better than the review wrote by Stefan Sittig at Amazon, as follows:

This LP captures Elis's brilliant performance at the 1979 Montreux Jazz Festival. The reason the album had not previously been released is because ticket sales had been so huge for Elis's show in Montreux, that the producers decided to add a matinee the same day of the evening show. Elis performed at the matinee, knocked them dead, but then lost steam for the evening show. She was tired, feeling wiped out from giving her all in the afternoon. Although Elis did get through the entire concert and at the end of that evening's performance, she was invited back on stage by Hermeto Pascoal to do some jamming sessions. Feeling perhaps revitalized, or more relaxed since the concert itself was over, Elis gave it her all and gave brilliant/improvisational renditions of classics of Bossa Nova, like "Corcovado", "Girl From Ipanema" and others. And Elis left the festival feeling at least vindicated for having sung well at the improv session with Pascoal.



But she was unhappy with the evening show, it wasn't good enough for Elis and she had her record producer promise never to release that concert live.


But 2 years later, after Elis had died, the record producer realized that they had also taped the afternoon show which had been wonderful! He then felt he must somewhat betray Elis's trust and find the master tapes for that stunning afternoon performance.



Well, he did and that, together with the improv/jam session with Pascoal, are what have been included in this latest CD release. And let me tell you, what a JOYOUS sound Elis produces, all the tracks are excellent, really, there are no stand-outs, all are uniformly brilliant.


Perhaps her jam session with Pascoal will be the most interesting section for her faithful, longtime fans, because she interprets classics in a totally new way. I can't think of another singer, except for perhaps Ella Fitzgerald, who could improv/scat/jam as well as Elis does in the session with Pascoal.


Pure brilliance, and a must-have for fans.

This was a task force to accomplish, the acclaimed Hermeto Pascoal presentation at the Watanabe Sadao Night, Den-en Colosseum, Tokyo, Japan (1979).



Live Under the Sky (1979) was a series of concerts held from 25 to 29 July, 1979. The first date was "The Brazilian Night", featuring Elis Regina and Hermeto Pascoal with the guest appearance of Sadao Watanabe. The last date was "The Sadao Watanabe Night", featuring Sadao Watanabe backed by Hermeto Pascoal.


Personnel:

Hermeto Pascoal (keyboards, flute),
Sadao Watanabe (sax),
Jovino Santos Neto (keyboards),
Itiberê Zwarg (bass), Nenê (drums),
Pernambuco and Zabele (percussion).


The audience was startled at the idiosyncratic look and ultra-sensational music by a Brazilian genius named Hermeto Pascoal. He looked as an eye-opener to our man Sadao Watanabe, too; they played together for the first time and Sadao got a big surprise from Pascoal's remarkable talent. At the same time, Sadao's playing and personality naturally impressed Pascoal, and the two eventually ended up having a hot, respectful conversation. The following text is the conversation that took place on July 29th, right after their stage entitled "the Watanabe Sadao Night". (Reported by Takemura Jun for Swing Journal).

Here we have a record that it is really out of Loronix style, but it is close to Christmas and it is a zecalouro's mother advice. I found this more than a few months ago at home, since then, zecalouro's mother keeps saying that I need to put this record at Loronix, she says that I use to hear to it several times when I was a kid, so it should be good to Loronix, etc. You known these things.



Mom's advice could never be ignored, so let's see what happens. This is Miles Davis - POP, New Directions in Music by Miles Davis (1973), for Columbia, the Brazilian issue of a Miles Davis record that I could never associate with the USA release, featuring Hermeto Pascoal, Airto Moreira, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. The participation of Hermeto Pascoal and Airto Moreira was important to make my decision to post this experimental LP, just a few songs and some long tracks with improvisations.


I don't know why zecalouro's mon likes this record. Perhaps she is celebrating the fact that I did not go nuts hearing this melting pot of crazy sounds. Who knows... Anyway, I hope you like it. This is a once in a lifetime release at Loronix, Christmas time...

"Little Church" is a Hermeto composition. This is a wonderful thing - Miles Davis, very much a genius, taking note of the great Hermeto. Airto has some great Miles stories from his brief time with him. This album was culled together from various recording dates and do not all have Airto and Hermeto. Too bad this union did not yield more recordings.

I look this record more like a compilation ("coletânea", in Brazil) from varios recording sessions than a brazilian version for a USA LP.
I'm curious to check if Little Church is the same as appears in "Live Evil".

mkail, there is another Hermeto composition in Live Evil, called Nem Um Talvez. It´s too bad they coundn´t do any other recordings together.. Just before Miles passed away, they were talking about recording an entire album together... Hermeto dedicated 2 songs to Miles, one is called "Pra Miles" that has never been recorded in studio, but has many live versions around the web. The other one is called "Capelinha e Lembranças" from Hermeto´s album "Eu e Eles". It starts with Little Church (Capelinha) with Hermeto playing four Flugelhorns and continues to the other section (lembranças). I think you guys would really like both of these songs!!!

In fact, one of the tracks in this album, "Selim" is actually called "Nem Um Talvez".

And "Complete Jack Johnson Sessions" has even more Hermeto compositions. One called Little High People, 2 versions, composed by Hermeto but without his instrumental involvement.
