Toots Thielemans – The Brasil Project (1992)

.
.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 03 de Julho 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Toots Thielemans recorded two tribute albums for Brazilian Music, which are called Brasil Project 1 and 2. Caetano already sent to us the second edition, Brasil Project 2, a very nice album, acclaimed by many Loronixers.

I could not wait longer for making Brasil Project 1 as soon arrived. The last track 12 – Bluesette is the main attraction, requested by Beto Kessel, kindly associated by zecalouro as Loronix Ambassador. Beto Kessel is a nice friend, knows everything about Brazilian music and Jazz and I want to dedicate this post to our Ambassador.

This is Toots Thielemans – The Brasil Project (1992), for Private Music, really a project, a great effort matching the harmonica player Toots Thielemans with his Brazilian performer friends, Ivan Lins, Luiz Bonfa, Oscar Castro Neves, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, among others. It is nice to see photos of a late Luiz Bonfa, available with the music. Bluesette is really the main attraction, a celebration performed by Toots Brazilian friends altogether.

Toots Thielemans – The Brasil Project Vol. 2 (1993)

This is another solid listen provided by one of the most fantastic friends I have the change to meet with Loronix. Let me stand up first before saying this name, Caetano Rodrigues.

Just follow this link and be amazed with loads and loads of rare and impossible to find music provided by Caetano.

It is important and an act of respect that all music provided by Caetano Rodrigues be available to the community, and that’s the reason why this album is being reposted in the first page.

I’m also missing Caetano’s valuable advice; I learned a lot with Caetano. Anyway, this is also an album that everybody cries for a rebirth. That’s what I had to say. I will keep my 2007 words below with some modifications.

Here we go on Caetano’s international release of the day, actually it is quite a mistake of mine to tag a Toots Thielemans album recorded with Brazilian artists as international.

Toots Thielemans has a great identification with the music from Brazil, being here several times of his life, recorded a wonderful album with Elis Regina, performed with several other renowned Brazilian artists, such as Rosinha de Valenca, Sivuca, among others.

This is Toots Thielemans – The Brazil Project Vol. 2 (1993), for Private Music, featuring Toots Thielemans harmonica and Luiz Bonfa, Eliane Elias, Dorival Caymmi, Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, among others. Personnel listing explain why this record is considered a “project”. I did not have muscles to type, how big it is. Another self-explanatory release. Thanks Caetano Rodrigues for showing this album to Loronixers.

This album is one of my all time favorites. I saw Toots together with Richard Gallianos New York Trio on the 2004 Berlin Jazzfest. He is one of the most inspiring musicians ever.

A big thank you for your fantastic work from Germany.

Hey there, thanks for all of the great music. It is amazing what you have done for my appreciation of Brazilian music. Just to let you know, it appears that the second download is the exact same as the first. That is, part B of this album is not included and the download is actually just part A. Whether you have time to fix it or not, I have so much gratitude for all you have done. Thanks.

parte2 = parte1 Falta a verdadeira parte2 (tracks 07-11)
Ai Zeca, ya me enredé… mas você entendiou ¿sim, verdade? Eu não sei como explicarte meior
Abraços, Nina

Luiz Bonfá – Passeio no Rio (1960)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 09 de maio 2008.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Hello, good morning! Yesterday I was very tired; life has been really busy down here. And when that happens, the day always ends in the worst possible way, by accident; I slept on the sofa reading the back cover of this beautiful EP sent to us by Jorge Mello. I feel in the obligation of sharing this one in this extraordinary morning post.
Let’s see.

This is Luiz Bonfa – Passeio no Rio (1960), for Odeon, featuring four songs, including the anthological Luiz Bonfa’s Manha de Carnaval, with Luiz Bonfa singing.

I could not check if these songs were recorded exclusively for this 7-inch EP, which is something that I will let you identify, I’m late for work and must leave in a second.

Have a good day and do not miss another Brazilian music night at Loronix today.

Tracks include:

01 – Manha de Carnaval (Luiz Bonfa / Antonio Maria)
02 – Passeio no Rio (Luiz Bonfa)
03 – Samba de Orfeu (Luiz Bonfa / Antonio Maria)
04 – Mosaico (Luiz Bonfa)

Luiz Bonfá & Norma Suely – A Voz e o Violão (1960)

Hello, good evening! I hope you have the same surprise I had when I got this one from the hands of Jorge Mello. I had this one on my “impossible to find” category, but thanks Jorge, we can now heard and share our thoughts about it.

A Voz e o Violao was recorded in 1960 by Luiz Bonfá and Norma Suely, owner of a very interesting voice that easily goes to popular and classic territory. Everything else I have to say are only assumptions and guesses, but I can guarantee that we are in front of a really worth checking album.
Let’s see.

This is Luiz Bonfa & Norma Suely – A Voz e o Violao (1960), for Odeon, with Luiz Bonfa guitar in all tracks and Norma Suely singing on tracks 03, 06, 07, 09 and 11. Norma Suely discography accomplishes a few 78RPM and two LPs, which includes this once in a lifetime album with Luiz Bonfa and a 1964 Polydor release produced by Joao Mello and arranged by Lindolfo Gaya, definitively worth checking out.

This is only the tip of the tip of an arrow called Jorge Mello’s music. Stay tuned, have a nice Sunday and thanks for your continuous support to Loronix.

Tracks include:

01 – A Voz do Violão (Francisco Alves / Horácio de Campos)
02 – Luar de Agosto (Nilo Queiroz / Baden Powell)
03 – Vagotonia (Lamartine Babo / Reinaldo Dias Leme)
04 – Samba do Orfeu (Luis Bonfá)
05 – Tema de Amor (Luis Bonfá)
06 – Quando a Noite Vem Amor (Luis Bonfá)
07 – Nasci Para Te Adorar (Luis Bonfá)
08 – Noche Azteca (Luis Bonfá)
09 – Rancho de Orfeu (Luis Bonfá / Haroldo Costa)
10 – Manhã de Carnaval (Luis Bonfá / Antônio Maria)
11 – Amor Sem Adeus (Luis Bonfá / Tom Jobim)
12 – Variações (Luis Bonfá)

Varios Artistas – Festival da Bossa Nova (1963)

Comentários originais incluídos.

Bonus: Arquivo em FLAC.

I have been monitor price and availability of this album since the very first beginning of Loronix. Perhaps this amazing cover artwork has called my attention to this record. I never had the chance to find it by a price I could afford at on-line auction sites and never had the chance to take it on my hands to understand what kind of Bossa Nova Festival was that.

Today I got it on my favorite old vinyl store in Copacabana for a unbelievable price.
Let’s see.

This is Festival da Bossa Nova (1963), for Odeon, unfortunately, not the live recording of a Bossa Nova Festival, but a compilation of Bossa Nova tunes performed by selected artists from Odeon cast, as follows: Walter Wanderley, Joao Gilberto, Isaura Garcia, Pery Ribeiro and Luiz Bonfa. The album was new as it would be in 1963 and played so nicely that I did not need to use any noise reduction application. This is the perfect record for those who are new to Bossa Nova and for those who are looking for a session performed by great artists based on a nice repertoire.

Tracks include:

The Performers

Isaura Garcia
Joao Gilberto
Luiz Bonfa
Pery Ribeiro
Walter Wanderley

Track List

01 – Samba de Uma Nota Só – João Gilberto
02 – Só Em Teus Braços – Isaura Garcia
03 – Menina Flor – Luis Bonfá
04 – O Barquinho – Pery Ribeiro
05 – Insensatez – João Gilberto
06 – Você e Eu – Walter Wanderley
07 – Desafinado – João Gilberto
08 – Fio de Canção – Luis Bonfá
09 – Corcovado – Isaura Garcia
10 – Chega de Saudade – João Gilberto
11 – Meditação – Walter Wanderley
12 – Melancolia – Luis Bonfá

This record is a compilation from well known Odeon LP`s from the featured artists, but “So em teus bracos” is not on a regular Isaura Garcia LP. This comes from an interesting album called: Hebe Camargo “Hebe comanda o espetaculo”1961 (Odeon MOFB-3224). This is the album with the famous living room front cover. On the whole album Walter Wanderley arranged and played tunes for different singers. It would be nice to see this album too one day at Loronix.

I was browsing the posts made at the very beginning of Loronix wondering about one of those mandatory upgrades. I found this one and I understood immediately that I was in front of those ones who deserve better media and also visibility at the first page. However, opening the comment section, I found a writing of one of the most respectful and renowned fans of the music from Brazil, B.J. Major, the owner and maintainer of The Music Discographies at www.bjbear71.com, serving up the best selected discographies on selected musicians since 1999, which make me feel really moved. I will take the opportunity to bring B.J. Major comment to this post. I could not make better.

“I have to say something about this album, even though this is an older post and probably no one will see it. I have been acquainted with this album for several years. To learn about it was like getting hold of a treasure chest, with each track a shining colored jewel. This record is a masterpiece, totally exquisite. Donato’s playing is superb throughout. But what makes these jewels shine are the arrangements by Claus Ogerman. This is an album that deserves far more attention than it receives. It demands listening. Careful listening. The jewel that shines the brightest for me on the album is Donato’s “Jungle Flower”. Listen to what Claus does with the strings on opening, making them go higher and higher until you think they cannot go any higher. Then they do. This one track is worth the entire price of admission to the album.
I have nothing but superlatives to say about this album. There is not one flaw in it, not one tiny little mistake. It is absolute perfection and to me, is one of the greatest bossa nova albums ever recorded. An assemblance of unique craftsmanship and talent, from the composer right down to the arranger/conductor, who makes it all sing.” – B.J. Major.

Do not miss B.J. Major website at

Oh yeah! This is really a wonderful record. BJ really captures the beauty of this in his words. I couldn’t agree more. Donato’s piano playing is so achingly beautiful, each note with its own unique weight and careful attention. I’ve always wondered whether Brazilians thought these type of records were too “Americanized” (or more accurately, “U.S.ized”)…that somehow the rhythm was off. But to me it sounds pretty good. Goodwin and Richardson may not be Brazilian, but they certainly provide lovely support for Joao here.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Zecalouro, you taught me about Joao Donato, and especially about this perfect album. Now I have an upgraded version of it because of this re-post, and I am extremely grateful.
Claus Ogerman is brilliant; his work on this album rivals that of Jobim’s Wave. When Diana Krall wanted to make a bossa album, she made sure to get Ogerman to help add authenticity. Like Owen Bradley in the field of American “countrypolitan” music, Ogerman’s sound is immediately recognizable.
I thank you again, Zecalouro, for this upgrade.

Luiz Bonfa – Introspection: Bonfa Solo Guitar (1972)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 10 de fevereiro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Hello, Good Night! I’m leaving tonight for some personal affairs, being back late to meet Loronix friends. Meanwhile, I would like to leave you with a great record that came as a contribution, the first out of several ones from the Loronix friend tcisalpino. I would like to say something about the new features implemented, the guide to Amazon in print records and the musicians @ Loronix mini-store. They are of a great importance to keep Loronix up and running, not by the commercial aspects with the revenue generation to Loronix, but with a better positioning of our community within several different players that surrounds us, something that we use to call in business language as the value chain. Loronix should generate benefits to everybody involved and these minor features were launched towards this value proposition.

This is Luiz Bonfa – Introspection: Bonfa Solo Guitar (1972), for RCA (USA), featuring Luiz Bonfa and his acoustic nylon guitar and considered by the critics as one of the best solo guitar albums ever made. Thanks once again tcisalpino for this great contribution to Loronixers. My writing does not have the quality needed to describe this music, so I will let you with a review from Thom Jurek/AMG.

Tracks include:

For all of his prodigious output (literally dozens of albums) and his widely celebrated artistry as a guitarist, bandleader, interpreter of popular songs from many traditions, and composer (of two of the breakthrough bossa film soundtrack Black Orpheus’ most seminal cuts, no less), no Luiz Bonfá recording reaches the dizzying — if gently stated — heights of his acumen in the way Introspection does. Recorded in 1972, this album features eight of Bonfá’s own compositions played on solo guitar, whether the nylon-string he established his reputation on, the electric six-string, or a specially designed 12-string. The deep emotion in each track, dovetailed with his lushly articulated phrasings in spare passages of warm, languid, sometimes somber, and always deeply romantic poetic imagery, is heart-searing. From the elegance of his classical enunciations on “Enchanted Mirror,” where each line is mirrored with chromatic counterpoint, to the shifting scalar morphing in “Reflections,” to the gloriously complex yet seamless and edgeless harmonic interplay of “Rain,” to the shimmering Charlie Byrd and Django Reinhardt quotations in “Leque,” Bonfá’s guitar artistry is total. But more than this, these compositions sing; they carry the fire and intervallic dimensionality of sonatas and the human ambiguities of song. Introspection may be the one title — if you can only have one — in Bonfá’s catalog to own. It not only stands as his best work but, along with Bola Sete’s Shambhala Moon, may be the best guitar recording in the history of Latin music.

Track List:

01 – Enchanted Mirror (Luis Bonfá)
02 – Summertime Love (Luis Bonfá)
03 – Reflections (Luis Bonfá)
04 – Concerto For Guitar (Luis Bonfá)
05 – Rain (Luis Bonfá)
06 – Leque (Luis Bonfá)
07 – Missal (Luis Bonfá)
08 – Adventure In Space (Luis Bonfá)

Thanks tcisalpino for Luiz Bonfa – Introspection: Bonfa Solo Guitar (1972).

I find “Introspection” a bit overrated, quite frankly. Technically, I naturally agree it ranks among Bonfa’s best. We can find truly great inspirational moments throughout the record (track 5 ‘Rain’ being one of my favorites), but my opinion is that it’s just not as innovative as one might expect after bumping into praises about everywhere (just read reissue producer Arnaldo de Souteiro’s liner notes on
http://www.koorax.com/jsr/prod/bonfaint.htm and the AMG review posted by Zeca). People aware of e.g. Carlos Paredes’ (1925-2004) work with the Portuguese guitar will recognize him as the main inspiration for Bonfa’s “Instrospection”. Some evidence? Drop by http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwhV1ivYNsQ orhttp://bravojuju.blogspot.com/2007/08/carlos-paredes-movimento-perptuo-1971.html

We should thank the Loronix friend Stefan from Germany. He was responsible for calling my attention to this album, recorded in Germany, Hamburg. Caterina Valente is the lady that introduces Luiz Bonfa on last video. She was born in France and then moved to Germany where she started his professional career in 1953. Caterina Valente sings in six languages, including Portuguese, which is the language he sings on this marvelous album.

This is Caterina Valente & Luiz Bonfa - Caterina Valente & Luiz Bonfa (1963), for Decca Germany. This album was recorded in two days, January 23rd and 25th, featuring all compositions by Luiz Bonfa. Selected tracks were issued on several formats by Decca, including 45RPM, singles and EPs. The cover artworks of these editions are really worth to be seen, you can check all them together at Luiz Bonfa discography by Yasouka,

02 - Sorrindo (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo)

04 - Vem Só (Luis Bonfá)

Before starting Loronix, I never realize how great is German passion for the music from Brazil. The evidences are clear, Baden Powell has a great popularity in German, helping on leveraging the interest for Brazilian music as a whole. Brazil-on-Guitar is another fantastic demonstration of dedication Germans have for Brazilian music. I could make several new friends Loronix friends on Germany, something that could only be accomplished with Loronix.

Loronixers from Germany, our country number 3, came last year from 136 different cities. Berlin takes the lead with 16% of visits, followed by Frankfurt 9% and Cologne with 7%, showing a low concentration on major cities. Germany is tuned as a whole at Loronix. It was also really difficult to select Germany picture and I took a decision based on a calm landscape showing mountains. Thanks a lot for the last year, Loronixers from Germany. You got the podium, third position.

Thanks, zecalouro

jack on Friday, 01 June, 2007Ah, Caterina....... [grand soupir]
Thanks, Loronix, for identifying the beautiful woman who introduced Bonfa in the video clip.
Thanks also, for the link to those other Caterina Valente album covers. Apparently, she was one of those lovely women who actually looked lovelier with a short haircut (at least, IMHO).
The Clairol Flip was definitely not a good look for her, though. In that respect, Caterina was like Lesley Gore, another
lovely young lady who was saddled--literally--with a terrible look.

I am very happy to see this album here , which is one of my Bossa Top 20 albums since I bought the LP.
So it is a more pleasure to know now that it was recorderd here in Germany-Really the best pick for homage our country.
This was always the thing I wondered about when i looked to my Brazilian LP release by London/Odeon.
thanks to all German friends - wow !!we on No 3 for top visitors.
I hope our friends also enjoy the Klaus Doldinger EP.
Best wishes

Anonymous on Saturday, 02 June, 2007For those who doesn't know, here in Brazil there's a singer who was deeply influenced by Caterina Valente. Her name is Lana Bittencourt. She recorded many tunes made famous by Miss Valente in the 1950 and 1960's. Here at Loronix we can check Lana's version for 'Oho-aha', one of Caterina hits. The song is available at the album 'Musicalscope'.
Talking about Mrs.Bittencourt, she has just shooted her part on a very important TV series called 'Ensaio', for Cultura TV(São Paulo). Everybody will know that the singer still performs her art beautifully, though she hasn't recorded an album since 1998. The program will be brodcasted very soon.
All the best for Loronix.

Mr. D&C on Monday, 04 June, 2007Best wishes from Berlin to all Loronixers.
The germans need the sunny vibes from Brazil because we miss the sun and the warm temperatures you have over there. But thanks to the global-warming it becomes better and better.
And never forget the landmark album from Germany "Folklore E Bossa Nova Do Brasil" on MPS (already listed here)!!!

Muchas gracias por el disco de Caterina..............
Vaya recuerdos.....Abrazo y obrigado!!Ronaldo

Luiz Bonfa - Amor! | The Fabulous Guitar of Luiz Bonfa (1958)

There was a plan for tonight, agreed with Caetano that could not be accomplished. Blame it on computer problems and a little bit of human and parrot mistakes in the process. That's why I decided to show you this early Luiz Bonfa LP, never made available before at Loronix. Additionally, I'm showing a video with Luiz Bonfa and Caterina Valente performing Manha de Carnaval, in my opinion, one of the greatest videos available at Loronix ever, making sure that everybody will have a chance to see it and also urge everybody to send any Luiz Bonfa videos. This video is awesome and I'm sure everybody wants to see more.

This is Luiz Bonfa - Amor!
The Fabulous Guitar of Luiz Bonfa (1958), for Atlantic, featuring Luiz Bonfa (guitar), Don Elliott (mellophone, vibraphone, triangle), Tommy Lopez (bongo, conga), and Ralph Freundlich (flute). Amor is from a period that I like most amongst Luiz Bonfa albums, the late 50's and a little bit of the early 60's. I don't need to say more, this release explains by itself and it is more than a replacement of the original plan.

Tracks include:

01 - Brasília
02 - I'll Remember April
03 - Lonely Lament
04 - Carnival
05 - George Back In Town
06 - Blue Madrid
07 - Island Of Trindade
08 - Old Times
09 - Marajó
10 - Indian Dance
11 - Nelly
12 - Preludio
13 - Yesterdays
14 - Bagpipes
15 - Arabesque

This is Luiz Bonfa - Amor!

Hello, I just found this site a couple of days ago and I must say it is excellent. Any chance you could repost the Arthur Verocai album? I have been desperately looking for it since I heard Na Boca do Sol a while ago. Thanks.

Obrigado. Claudio Zancan (Santo Ângelo, RS)

Luiz Bonfa & Don Burrows - Bonfa, Burrows, Brazil (1978)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 19 de fevereiro 2007.

Comentários originais incluídos.

The choices were many for this closing post. They were sent to some Loronixers. One of them said I was killing him, torturing with all the choices. Anyway, the chance to make a mistake is reduced. I want to make like regular Brazilian people, turn on the TV, make some hot dogs and fall sleeping in 30 minutes watching the Carnaval parade. Meanwhile, you can stay with Luiz Bonfa.

This is Luiz Bonfa & Don Burrows - Bonfa Burrows Brazil (1978), for CPF - Australia, another collaboration from the Australian sax, flute player Don Burrows with Brazilian musicians, this time with Luiz Bonfa. Self-explanatory closing post. Bonfa guitar can be heard in all tunes. I took this sentence from one of the best Luiz Bonfa discographies available at the Internet, Luiz Bonfa Discography from Koichi Yasuoka, here. You cannot miss Yasuoka work.

Tracks include:

Personnel:

Don Burrows
(flute, alto flute, alto sax, percussion, bamboo flute)

Luiz Bonfá
(guitar, vocal)

George Golla
(electric guitar, guitar)

Paul Baker
(bass)

Doug Gallagher
(conga drums, drums)

Tony Ansell
(piano)

George Andre
(bass, arrange)

Jose Boto
(drums)

Julian Lee
(strings arrange)

01 - The Shade Of The Mango Tree (Luis Bonfá)
02 - Sofisticada (Luis Bonfá)
03 - Enchanted Sea (Luis Bonfá)
04 - Batucada (Luis Bonfá)
05 - Menina Flor (Luis Bonfá)
06 - Gisele (Luis Bonfá)
07 - Prelude (Luis Bonfá)
08 - Passeio no Rio (Luis Bonfá)
09 - Morning Of The Carnival (Luis Bonfá)

Luiz Bonfa - Black Orpheus Impressions (1968)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 23 de janeiro 2007.

I was planning to close the day with something different that I could decide together with Caetano, but we used a criteria that was not confirmed when I took the original choice for a hearing, that's why I'm making this pick, which is a record that was sent a long time ago by Cesar Saldanha that has just made a strong contribution a couple of days ago that will please everybody. Thanks Cesar for this LP and also for your "secret" contribution to Loronixers. I'm sure that we cannot go wrong with this pick, also a recommendation of Mr. D&C.

This is Luiz Bonfa - Black Orpheus Impressions (1968), for Dot Records/RGE USA. Cesar uses to make a nice work from start to end with his contributions and sent the complete personnel listing to this record, which includes Maria Helena Toledo vocals. The cover artwork disturbs me a little bit and as every Luiz Bonfa album, different covers artwork from reissues were also not inspiring.

Tracks include:

Personnel:

Luiz Bonfá
(guitar and vocal)

Eumir Deodato
(piano and organ)

Ron Carter
(bass)

Dom Um Romao
(drums)

Marvin Stamn
(trumpet)

Maria Helena Toledo
(vocal)

Track List

01 - Dreamy (Luis Bonfá / Simon / Maria Helena Toledo)
02 - Capoeira (Eumir Deodato)
03 - Night Waltz (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo)
04 - Song Of The Hills (Luis Bonfá)
05 - Manhã de Carnaval (Luis Bonfá / Antônio Maria) with Maria Helena Toledo
06 - Samba de Orfeu (Luis Bonfá)
07 - Dois Amores (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo) with Maria Helena Toledo
08 - Na Paz do Amor (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo)
09 - Rancho de Orfeu (Luis Bonfá)
10 - Rio With Love (Luis Bonfá)
11 - Bahia Soul (Luis Bonfá)

Beautiful! Bonfa in a fuller sound setting. Exquisite arrangements. I always wondered what the original version of "Dreamy" by Astrud sounded like.
Thanks Zeca & Cesar
