Joao Roberto Kelly e Luiz Reis - Samba a Quatro Maos (1964)

.
.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 27 de janeiro 2007.

When I took this LP for a hearing I did not realize how good it was. Like the Jazzman uses to say, do not walk to it, run. This is an enjoyable set of two pianists playing and singing Samba. People say that zecalouro uses to say that all records are Samba records while they are Bossa Nova, etc. Forgive-me if I'm wrong, but this LP is a Samba LP by definition.

This is Joao Roberto Kelly and Luiz Reis - Samba em Quatro Maos (1964), for RCA Victor (BBL 1270). Joao Roberto Kelly and Luiz Reis are pianists and composers and this is the difference on this LP that seams that was recorded on a very relaxed session with smiles on the face of both. I have been asking everybody about this LP and I could only hear people saying that it is a solid release, from start to end, don't miss it and join this selected club.

Tracks include:

01 - Cara de Pau (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
02 - Faço Um Lê-lelê (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) -- Gamação (João Roberto Kelly)
03 - Samba de Balanço (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) -- Pirata da Calçada (João Roberto Kelly)
04 - Leilão (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) -- Brotinho Bossa Nova (João Roberto Kelly)
05 - Lá Vou Eu (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
06 - Samba de Teleco-teco (João Roberto Kelly) -- Desfolhando a Margarida (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
07 - Só Vou de Balanço (João Roberto Kelly)
08 - Boato (João Roberto Kelly) -- Lamento Bibop (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
09 - Ciuminho (João Roberto Kelly)
10 - Sua Boca É Um Perigo (João Roberto Kelly) -- Samba do Trouxa (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
11 - Palhaçada (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis) -- Zé da Conceição (João Roberto Kelly)
12 - Canequinho (Aloísio Silva Araújo / Luis Reis)

Bobby Mackay - The Real Bobby Mackay (1968)

.
.
Incluido: Blow Here Breeze = Eu e A Brisa (Johnny Alf)

.
.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 20 de novembro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Hello, good evening! It happens every year and it is impossible to ignore. Natal, Christmas, Navidad, Noel, Kurisumasu, Natale, no matter how you say in your part of the world, it is coming closer. I have a problem with Christmas albums and their very predictable songs, but once in a while you find something really unique, such like last Christmas when we made really nice albums.

I’m not sure if we can keep last year’s pace, but I want to start great with this one, sent for last Christmas by a friend that I cannot remember right now. Let’s see.

This is Os Velhinhos Transviados – O Natal dos Velhinhos Transviados (1966), for RCA Victor, a compacto duplo (EP), featuring four Christmas tracks and this really nice cover that worth the admission price. It is Christmas, so I’m making it with no Rapidshare.

Tracks include:

01 – Jingle Bells (D. P.)
02 – White Christmas (Irving Berlin)
03 – Boas Festas (Assis Valente)
04 – Noite Silenciosa (Franz Gruber)

Marvelous post, Loro.
I´ve been waiting so long for another Velhinhos Transviado´s album. The art sleeve is hilarious as always. This Christmas gift came a bit early. :-)

Thank you very much!

Conjunto de Jazz Bossa Nova – Brasil Bossa Nova (1963)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 03 de Janeiro 2008.
Comentários originais incluídos.

I thought I knew everything about Bossa Nova discography after managing Loronix albums for more than a year. Unfortunately, when you have a collector such like Caetano Rodrigues on your side, it is silly to think you know everything. Caetano has a strange relationship with his collection, he loves his albums, keeping everything organized by sections in his place, which is such like a record store of our dreams, but he thinks that everybody has the music he only has. I got amazed with this album, which I did not have idea that exists, and Caetano got amazed to know that I don’t have it.

You will understand what I’m saying with the last post tonight, which will be one of the greatest albums available at Loronix, and in spite of Caetano thinks that everybody has it, I’m quite sure that nobody had the chance to know. Such like this one.

This is Conjunto de Jazz Bossa Nova – Brasil Bossa Nova (1963), for RCA Victor, featuring a quintet of bass, flute, violao, drums, sax and trombone. Personnel listing is partially identified and Caetano should be pleased if our community identifies the remaining musicians.

Brasil Bossa Nova is a great Samba Jazz session, so far one of the greatest releases in the style at Loronix. Thanks Caetano.

It amuses me how RCA Victor tried to make this cover look almost like a Verve cover from the same era…

Jacob do Bandolim – Epoca de Ouro | Jacob e Seu Bandolim em HI-FI (1958)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 11 de Novembro 2008.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Hello again! Busy day at Loronix today, this is good. Before talking about this reposting, I would like to say that I received emails from friends who live outside Brazil asking for directions to purchase Charles Gavin’s book 300 Discos Importantes da Música Brasileira. My advice is to use Livraria Cultura on-line, they ship outside Brazil, in five continents, check this page to see Livraria Cultura shipping rates & policies. And good luck!

This is Jacob do Bandolim – Epoca de Ouro | Jacob e Seu Bandolim em HI-FI (1958), for RCA Victor. Jacob do Bandolim recorded this album in 1958, and it is really different from his regular choro releases. Jacob is backed by and orchestra arranged by Maestro Radames Gnatalli and Maestro Carioca with Maestro Zaccarias in charge of conduction. There is also a Conjunto, not with a traditional Choro formation, featuring bass, piano, sax and accordion performed by renowned Brazilian musicians. The first post was made with a mid 60’s RCA Candem reissue and this is the first RCA Victor original issue, featuring this beautiful cover that finally arrives at Loronix.

Let’s start the new 7-inch section of the day, the first is and EP, four tracks, featuring the acclaimed Brazilian duo Antonio Carlos e Jocafi.
This is Antonio Carlos e Jocafi – Antonio Carlos e Jocafi (1974), for RCA Victor. I never saw this album and I’m wondering how popular it was since includes one of their top hits Toro de Lagrimas. The cover artwork brings a nice picture of the duo, being the same in the front and back.

Tracks include:

01 – Toró de Lagrimas (Antonio Carlos / Jocafi / Ze do Maranhão)
02 – Dona da Casa (Antonio Carlos / Jocafi)
03 – Fraqueza (Antonio Carlos / Jocafi / Ze do Maranhão)

Zaccarias e Sua Secao de Palhetas - Palhetas Espetaculares (1962)

.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 24 de junho 2007.

I'm only bringing this album to the spotlight due relevant information sent by an anonymous contributir today. Maestro Zacarrias = Zaccarias e Sua Secao de Pahetas | Palhetas Espetaculares (1962), was release in December 14, with no information on personnel listing. I'm bringing it to the spotlight due a relevant information sent by an anonymous friend that could gather personnel listing from "Parada de LPs", written by Silvio Tulio.

Silvio Tulio in May 03, 1962, wrote complete personnel listing on his article, which I'm making available bellow, updating the original post. Friends of Brazil-on-Guitar will be really excited discovering an unknown Baden Powell album as sideman. Thanks anonymous, I hope you come back to tell us how can you dig such old newspapers like this one.

This is the original post with personnel update. Do not miss original anonymous writing in comments section and download package with better cover artwork scans.

-------------------------------------

This record makes a nice explanation of the classification of musical instruments at back cover linear notes as families of musical instruments as they are organized in an orchestra. I will try to summarize to our friends.

Musical instruments are grouped into families based on how they make sounds. In an orchestra, musicians sit together in these family groupings. But this is not that simple, some instruments seem to be of a family and by the way sound is produced, they are categorized in another. For instance, I heard somewhere that sax and clarinets are from the same group of the acoustic guitar, since the concept is a wood that vibrates on both cases. In Brazil, this family is known as Familia das Palhetas.

Confusing... Anyway, this record is all about the Palhetas with sax and clarinets. This is Zaccarias e Sua Secao de Palhetas - Palhetas Espetaculares (1962), for RCA Victor, wonderful orchestra album, all about the Palhetas family. Zaccarias - by the way, a new Brazilian Maestro at Loronix - organizes his Secao de Palhetas as 5 saxophones and 4 clarinets, backed up by a rhythmic section as of bass, piano, drums, guitar and percussion. Another nice release that was kindly sent to zecalouro by our great friend Caetano Rodrigues. I invite you to check this wonderful album and share your comments with us. Tracks include:

Zecalouro,

Clarinetes: Paulo Moura, José Sergio, Josino e Botelho; Saxofones: Jaime Araujo, Jorge Ferreira, Sandoval, Aurino e Joaquim Gonçalves; Bateria: Plinio Araujo; Piano: Fats Elpidio; Guitarra: Baden Powell; Contrabaixo: Luis Marinho; Percussão: Gilberto, Pedro e Barão

Maestro Zaccarias e Sua Orquestra - Sambas em Desfile (1955)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 14 de janeiro 2007.

I'm now a big fan of the 10-inch records released in the mid 50's. The thing that I like most about these 10-inch is that you never know what you will have before hearing. Some of them are simple and beautiful and some others - such like the last Turma da Gafieira - are complex and seem to be ahead of the time they were recorded. Another fact is the size of the record, fitting an average of 20 minutes of music in eight tracks, not so short as the single or EP and not so long as the LP. I’m sad that 10-inch had disappeared very soon.

Let's make another 10-inch, another contribution from the legendary Mr. X., one of the first Loronix contributors and one of the most patient ones since I have several albums sent by him waiting and he does not mind it. Thanks Mr. X. This is Maestro Zaccarias e Sua Orquestra - Sambas em Desfile (1955), for RCA Victor, one of the earliest Maestros Zaccarias LPs. This record is a truly amazing orchestra album with Samba rhythms, played such like the old Escolas de Samba from Rio de Janeiro and Gafieiras use to make. A nice piece of a very old record provided for Mr. X. that Loronixers should not miss.

Tracks include:

01 - Está Chegando a Hora (Henricão / Rubens Campos)
02 - Madalena (Ari Macedo / Airton Amorim)
03 - Pra Seu Governo (Haroldo Lobo / Milton de Oliveira)
04 - Meu Consolo É Você (Antônio Nássara / Roberto Martins)
05 - Não Tenho Lágrimas (Max Bulhões / Milton de Oliveira)
06 - Palpite Infeliz (Noel Rosa)
07 - Maria Boa (Assis Valente)
08 - É Bom Parar (Rubens Soares)

Hi Zeca,
Fantastic progress you are making repairing the damages at your site!
I just wanted to report some problems I have encountered. I guess it is best to make each comment at the problematic record enttry so here goes a first. There is indeed still problem with Zaccaris (1955) Only track one can be unzipped and I have tried to download the file several times but with the same result. Maybe you can fix this when you get some spare time :-)

Hi Zeca,
Thank you for this wonderful site!
I recently stumbled upon it and find myself "gifting" this music to myself everyday.
I just opened the .zip of this album and indeed, track 2 is corrupted. The others play beautifully though.
