I took a time today to visit the beach facilities of Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. They made a great work on assembling an infrastructure down here; the place is clean, secure and really beautiful. However, there is an exception, the music. We should admit, in the past, the offer was really better. We did not have iPods, CDs, etc. but the music available was fantastic, take this album as an example: there was a time in Brazil that instrumental music, such as this one made by Zimbo Trio, was commercially successful.
I think this is the main reason for the average of 3,000 daily visits Loronix receives everyday. The music available here is truly amazing and this fantastic Caetano Rodrigues contribution is the perfect example.

This is Zimbo Trio – Zimbo Trio Vol. 2 (1965), for RGE, which is the second LP released by Zimbo Trio. There is no much to say about this album, a solid listen from the start until the end. Some friends even say that this one is better then their first album, the “red” one, already released at Loronix. Once again, use comments section to give feedback and also say if you feel the need to get it in looseless format.

You are absolutely right. I sometimes listen to some music in my car radio, and 99% is crap. The same vulgar, commercial and uninspired musical schemes, repeated until you get sic. Music to be sold and, in less than a year, forgotten in the darkness of the time.
And we are here listening to music made 40, 50, 60 years ago! (when the majority of us where “in the Limbo” waiting to be born). That speaks a lot about its quality.
But not only the music is great at Loronix. We find here personal references, history, culture, … which help to correctly frame this music in the context in which it was created, and allow us to enjoy it even more.
One example. I had never heard anything about Zimbo Trio, Tamba Trio, Quarteto Em Zy, MPB-4, Nara Leão, Dorival Caymmi, Edú Lobo, Carlos Lyra … until you post their LPs here, last year. And now their music is the one that I hear the most, and also I know something about their lives, their feelings, …
There you are the secret of the success of Loronix. Thanks a lot, Zeca, Caetano and the rest of Loronixers whose contributions to Loronix make very special this moment of the day in which we open the web browser to watch “what surprises has delivered today Zeca at Loronix”.

Hi, I think that all of this fantastic music should be compressed in lossless format. Most people who visit this site have fairly speed connection.

Zimbo Trio - Aquarela do Brasil (1993)

What more can we say about Zimbo Trio? These guys are flawless, they cannot make a bad album, even if they try to do that. No matter if it was released in the 60's, 70's, 80's or 90's they keep the pace, delivering excellence on arrangements, performances and nice re-harmonizations of well known tunes. Aquarela do Brasil was first issued in 1993 and they perform with the same energy and happiness as their first 60's LP.

This is Zimbo Trio - Aquarela do Brasil (1993), for Jazz Hour and issued in Brazil by Musiplay. Aquarela do Brasil is an album of the CD age, so we have noise free music and extended duration, approximately one hour of renditions to Bossa Nova standards, own Zimbo compositions and songs from modern Brazilian composers, such as Djavan, Joao Bosco, Aldir Blanc and others. What a day we had today with three really solid releases. Have a nice Sunday and stay tuned for the forthcoming Sunday night releases. Tracks include:

Personnel

Amilton Godoy
(piano)
Luiz Chaves
(bass)
Ruben Barsoti
(drums)

Track List

01 - Samba Dobrado (Djavan)
02 - Antiqua (Tom Jobim)
03 - Aquarela Do Brasil (Ary Barroso)
04 - Ao Piazzola (Luis Chaves)
05 - Coisa Feita (João Bosco / Paulo Emílio / Aldir Blanc)
06 - Beatriz (Chico Buarque / Edu Lobo)
07 - Asa (Zoo Blues) (Djavan)
08 - Canções E Momentos (Milton Nascimento / Fernando Brant) Caçador de Mim (Sergio Magrão / Luis Carlos Sá)
09 - Notas Que Falam (Amilton Godoy / Dulce Auriemo)
10 - Tema De Amor De Gabriela (Tom Jobim)

Perhaps I'm having a good relationship with Rio de Janeiro, since in the last days we had covers, videos and pictures based on Rio landscapes. Maybe Caetano is missing Rio, this is another of his amazing and never seen before records. Actually, Brasil '66 is a compilation on side B and part of a given album by the mighty Maestro Erlon Chaves. Let's check what we have here.

This is Brasil '66 (1966), for Fermata, featuring Erlon Chaves, Zimbo Trio, Manfredo Fest, Paulinho Nogueira, Ely Arcoverde, Bossa Jazz Trio and Luiz Chaves e seu Conjunto. The whole side A with six songs features Erlon Chaves e Sua Orquestra, while each track of side B is taken by these top-notch instrumental musicians. I think that nothing can go wrong with this album, starting with the cover that alone worth the admission price. Tracks include:

Erlon Chaves e Sua Orquestra

Garota de Ipanema
Das Rosas
Acender as Velas
Balanco Zona Sul
Marcha da Quarta Feira de Cinzas
Brazilian Varig

Zimbo Trio
Arrastao

Manfredo Fest
Reza

Paulinho Nogueira
Opiniao

Ely Arcoverde
O Menino das Laranjas

Bossa Jazz Trio
Maria Moita

Luiz Chaves e Seu Conjunto
Berimbau

Zeca, só não descobri sobre o Ely Arcoverde, mas todos os demais artistas desse album são não-cariocas. Entretanto os temas, e a bela capa, fazem referência direta ao Rio. É mais um pequeno detalhe interessante.

Hi, I don't usually write down to ask for anything, but I'd like to know if someone has an Lp called VIVRE!, by the french musician and singer PIERRE BAROUH, who fell in love with bossa nova in the sixties and penned SAMBA SARAVAH.
Thank you

bossanovadreamer on Sunday, 22 April, 2007

Hello Peleon,
I am a fan of Pierre Barouh.
yes, I have Barouh's album Vivre (this Japan Cd release) : I also have the Barouh CD Saudade which includes the song Saudade with Baden Powell on guitar (they tell it is the first recorded french Bossa Nova )Do you want it? we can talk about. I think Vivre is out of print.

Best wishes

PELEON on Sunday, 22 April, 2007

I didn't know it was released on CD, and of course I'm interested in.

I cannot say how many times I had to answer a very common question: "When you will run out of records at Loronix"? The answer is an estimate of mine that is always being moved away. Brazilian music from the years we like and we use to see at Loronix seems to be really huge. There is a lot to be explored and the big surprises are the LPs I find and never saw before from the great giants, such as Zimbo Trio.

This is Zimbo Trio - Strings and Brass Plays the Hits (1971), for Philips. Everything went as planned with this post. The cover artwork is one of the best I could make using my resources and the music was created using some upgrades installed today. It will be very nice to receive feedbacks on these files quality, I need to realize some do's and dont's, Loronixers feedback is essential in the process. No comments on this release, except that there are no Brass and Strings as the title suggest, but only piano, bass, drums and Zimbo Trio playing the hits, at Loronix.

01 - Madalena (Ivan Lins / Ronaldo Monteiro de Souza)
02 - Bridge Over Troubled Water (Paul Simon)
03 - Falei e Disse (Baden Powell / Paulo César Pinheiro)
04 - Agora (Ivan Lins / Ronaldo Monteiro de Souza)
05 - I'll Be There (Gordy / West / Hutch / Davis)
06 - Apesar de Você (Chico Buarque)
07 - Na Tonga da Mironga do Kabuletê (Toquinho / Vinicius de Moraes)
08 - Primavera (Vai Chuva) (Cassiano / Silvio Rochael)
09 - Close To You (They Long To Be) (Burt Bacharach / David)
10 - Catimbó (Luis Chaves)
11 - Pulo Pulo (Jorge Ben "Jorge Benjor")

Fica aqui registrada a minha sugestão. []s

I spoke with Caetano and hour ago by phone and I'm happy with that phone call, it was useful to remember this record, we simply forgot it among several options we had to make this tribute. I would be very disappointed if I did not remember this album, a truly awe RGE compilation of instrumental Jobim songs played by the Bossa Nova Trios, Combos and artists that we love together at Loronix. Let's see why it should be so disappointing if I have missed it.

This is Homenagem a Antonio Carlos Jobim - Instrumental 2 (no date), for RGE, featuring Paulinho Nogueira, Raul Mascarenhas, Zimbo Trio, Pedrinho Mattar, Quarteto Bossamba, Dick Farney, Raul de Souza, Som Tres, Os Intocaveis and Breno Sauer Quinteto. I spoke with Caetano about this record and he said that some tracks were only released by RGE in single or EP, so I think this LP be a great excitement to Loronixers.

Tracks include:

01 - Corcovado - Paulinho Nogueira
02 - Wave - Raul Mascarenhas
03 - Garota de Ipanema - Zimbo Trio
04 - Desafinado - Pedrinho Mattar
05 - Vivo Sonhando - Quarteto Bossamba
06 - Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce - Dick Farney
07 - Anos Dourados - Raul de Souza
08 - So Saudade - Quarteto Bossamba
09 - O Morro Nao Tem Vez - Som Tres
10 - Samba do Aviao - Os Intocaveis
11 - So Tinha de Ser Com Voce - Zimbo Trio
12 - Meditacao - Dick Farney
13 - Luciana - Breno Sauer Quinteto
14 - Chega de Saudade - Pedrinho Mattar

I absolutely love these compilations you've been posting. Keep up the outstanging job. You have the most tasteful, TUNEful site on blogger dot com

The tracks listed as played by "Quarteto Bossamba" are actually played by Walter Wanderley, double tracked on both piano and organ. I recognized both arrangements immediately as I have them on his albums. If you doubt he is on the piano, listen carefully and you will hear the Hammond B3 organ playing also.

I have been punishing myself since I got recommendations of nice Loronix friends to focus on Sebastiao Tapajos, the Brazilian violonista (acoustic guitar) player with more than 50 recorded albums. I don't know who blame for this fault (the fact zecalouro never took Sebastiao Tapajos for a try), but hearing Sebastiao Tapajos LPs for the first time is such like receiving a new bike from daddy.

Let's start with Sebastiao Tapajos with style, this is Zimbo Trio & Sebastiao Tapajos - Zimbo Convida Sebastiao Tapajos (1981), for Clam, really nice release, I have been hearing this LP every day and on each new try there are new treasures to discover. Another self-explanatory release.

Tracks include:

01 - Danca (Luiz Chaves)
02 - Voce Nao Pode Ouricar (Alexandre Dantas do Amaral)
03 - Marajo (Sebastiao Tapajos / Rubens Barsotti)
04 - Preludio para Karen (Sebastiao Tapajos / Mauricio Einhorn)
05 - Um Pro Zimbo (Sebastiao Tapajos / Mauricio Einhorn)
06 - Recado pro Tiao Tapajos (Luiz Chaves)
07 - Lua Joa (Sebastiao Tapajos)
08 - No Balanco do Vovo (Luiz Chaves)
09 - Igarapes (Sebastiao Tapajos / Mauricio Einhorn)
10 - Viajeiro (Luiz Chaves)
11 - Sincopando (Sebastiao Tapajos / Luiz Chaves / Amilton Godoy)

O cantor e compositor Marcos Valle
