Dick Farney & Booker Pittman – Jam Session das Folhas (1961)

.
.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 01 de agosto 2006.

Perhaps today is the day zecalouro is posting to Loronixers his mega-rare releases. Jam Session das Folhas – Dick Farney e Booker Pittman (1961) is very rare vinyl collectors item.

This LP was recorded live in the end of 1960 at the auditorium of a Brazilian newspaper, Folha de Sao Paulo. As zecalouro told before, Dick Farney was an outstanding singer and an awesome pianist who contributed decisively to the renovation of Brazilian popular music, incorporating jazz harmonies and style.

Dick was at the piano on all tracks, accompanied by Heraldo do Monte (guitar), Luiz Chaves (bass), Paulinho (drums) among others. Booker plays sax and sings on some tracks

Martoni:

Booker Pittman or Pitman (3 March 1909, Fairmount Heights, Maryland, USA - 19 October 1969, São Paulo, Brasil) was the son of Portia Pittman and a grandson of Booker T. Washington. He became an accomplished jazz clarinetist and played with greats like Louis Armstrong and Count Basie in the US and Europe in the 1920s and 30s. He is also an alto and soprano saxophonist. His stepdaughter Eliana Pittman is a Brazilian jazz singer and actress.

He left the US for the first time in 1933, when he went with Lucky Millinder's orchestra to France and stayed there for four years. During that period, he met a Brazilian musician named Romeo Silva, who took him on a tour of Brazil along with other musicians. They sailed to Bahia aboard the Siqueira Campos.
In 1937, Booker moved to Brazil, where he was known by the nickname "Buca", and continued his musical career there, playing at the Urca Casino. He lived in Copacabana and befriended Jorge Guinle and Pixinguinha. He also played in other countries, like Argentina.
In October 1969 he died in his home in the São Paulo quarter of Vila Nova Conceição of laryngeal cancer at the age of 60 . On behest of his wife Ofélia he was transferred to Rio de Janeiro and there laid to rest at the Cemitério São João Batista in the quarter of Botafogo.

Interesting in the comments is: when Daniella Thompson asked about the song “Cheese” , “Emanuel wrote ‘The song “Cheese” Was Composed By Pittman in Tribute to Dudu (the Banjo and guitar Player) because he used to eat a lot of Cheese.
Dudu was considered one of the best traditional jazz musicians and Pittman´s closest musician/friend. Nowadays Dudu has a band with his sons, the Banda PAPADÚ”.

Are there liner notes? And if so, do they say anything about the cheese song?

zecalouro on Wednesday, 02 August, 2006
Hello Daniella,

zecalouro is honored to see you down here.
This is a nice and very hard to find LP. Maria Luiza Kfoury – from the excellent http://www.discosdobrasil.com.br – has a copy. I guess she could not find any info on linear notes, take a look at http://tinyurl.com/gyfqj, there you will find info about the Chees song, which was composed by Booker and Daniel.
Who knows if on my weekly visit to the records stores in Rio de Janeiro I can gather some info with someone? I will let all friends here and you aware about it.
Enjoy your stay.

Tracks 1-4 are by Farney and are a delight to hear. Thereafter Pittman and a group of Dixieland wanabees take over and I must say I was not impressed. They take a comic attitude to almost everything and I did not think it worked very well. Pittman must think he is emulating the great Sidney Bechet on soprano but does not come close.

Great for tracks 1-4 and a downer for the rest.

I have the album,I love the Booker Pittman tracks (one of my favorite sopranos along Bechet, Emmett Matthews and the still active 94 years old Franz Jackson) it has an unusual guitarist and a fine trumpeter (and love Booker’s vocals as well). I find it funny that my view on this LP is the exact opposite of “jazzman” posted. I bought the LP for Pittman and was very happy about Pittman’s combo, but found the “coctail” jazz of Farney’s combo mundane for my taste (though very professional), viva la difference, I guess Yves Francois

Dick Farney e Claudette Soares – Dick & Claudette | Tudo Isto é Amor vol. 2 (1976)

I just spoke with Caetano by phone and he said the next package – a special and very different one – would be mailed tomorrow, first time in the morning. Tomorrow will be another day of tension on a day that seems to last 48 hours. Several other things are scheduled for tomorrow and I think it is better stop talking about it now before I spoil Caetano’s surprise with my big tongue.

These phone calls are also useful to get recommendations from Caetano and this album was celebrated when mentioned, by the way, what can go wrong when you have Dick Farney and Claudette Soares together? I really don’t know.

This is Dick Farney e Claudette Soares – Dick & Claudette | Tudo Isto e Amor Vol. 2 (1976), for Odeon, the second out of two albums released by Dick Farney in collaboration with Claudette Soares. This is not about Dick Farney piano accompanying Claudette Soares, they are singing together and the duets are beautiful, their voices and interpretation styles matches nicely. Personnel is not credited, but Dick Farney plays piano for sure and the legendary Saba from Jongo Trio is the executive producer.

Tracks include:

01 – Chuva (Durval Ferreira / Pedro Camargo)
02 – Nós (Johnny Alf)
03 – Demais (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
04 – Casualmente (Berimbau)
05 – Fim de Caso (Dolores Duran)
06 – Apelo (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – Nick Bar (José Vasconcelos)
08 – Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle)
09 – Ela Foi Embora (Oscar Bellandi / Djalma Ferreira)
10 – Tomara (Novelli / Paulo César Pinheiro / Maurício Tapajós)
11 – O Amor Em Paz (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)

Fala Zeca!

zecalouro on Monday, 21 May, 2007
Torab,

It is disappointing when you do not give value to something based on personal criterion and mannerisms or taking the others opinion and the truth.

That’s exactly what happened with the first collaboration between Dick Farney and Claudette Soares, Tudo Isto e Amor, Volume One.

I thought Volume Two – made available a couple of weeks ago at Loronix – was the best album and I’m shamed to realize this week that Volume One is several times better than the previous one. Volume one is really nice and I decided to show it today to Loronixers, perhaps I feel better on making it.

This is Dick Farney & Claudette Soares – Tudo Isto e Amor (1976), for Odeon. Better repertoire, beautiful arrangements and breathtaking performances in duo or solo by Dick Farney and Claudette Soares. I have been reading today several reviews and this album is highly recommended, no exception. Dick Farney makes a fascinating rendition of Tenderly (Lawrence / Gross), made available bellow as a teaser showing Farney interpretations on top of images of Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the last century.

Tracks include:

01 – O Que É Amar (Johnny Alf)
02 – Minha Namorada (Carlos Lyra / Vinicius de Moraes)
03 – Este Seu Olhar (Tom Jobim)
04 – De Você Eu Gosto (Tom Jobim / Aloysio de Oliveira)
05 – É Preciso Dizer Adeus (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
06 – Castigo (Dolores Duran)
07 – Tudo Isto É Amor (Laura Maria)
08 – Fotografia (Tom Jobim)
09 – Tenderly (Lawrence / Gross)
10 – O Nosso Olhar (Sergio Ricardo)

1-Dick Farney no Waldorf (1960)
2-DF on Broadway(1955),
3-DF Trio (1956),
4-Um piano ao cair da tarde II
É pra alimentar a gula musical…farnesiana…

He was the first to record the American standard”. Infelizmente é o Brasil.
Um grande abraço a todos,

Dick Farney Trio – Concerto de Jazz Ao Vivo (1973)

JOAO-SP sent us this great Dick Farney album, a missing piece on Dick Farney discography at Loronix.

Here we have Dick Farney as pianist, not as a singer, performing renditions of international standards. I could not identify where this recording session took place, but my best guess it was at Auditorio do Globo, since the photos are credited to O Globo, a newspaper based in Rio de Janeiro.

By the way, it is unbelievable that all Dick Farney career albums are not available commercially.
Let’s see.

This is Dick Farney Trio – Concerto de Jazz ao Vivo (1973), for London, featuring Dick Farney Trio performing live for the first time with a formation that brings two Jongo Trio musicians and also two active Dick Farney collaborators of many 70′s releases, Antonio Pinheiro Filho, also known as Toninho and Sebastiao Oliveira da Paz, the legendary Saba. If you are in the mood of listening a Jazz concert, featuring three great musicians performing a repertoire of standards with lots of improvisations, this is the album you were waiting for. Thanks once again JOAO-SP for this always surprising and never end set of albums you kindly sent to Loronix community.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Track List

01 – Perdido (Tizo / Lengsfelder / Drake)

05 – The Shadow Of Your Smile (J. Mandel / Paul Francis Webster)

Hello, good evening! I think cvllos and every Dick Farney enthusiast will be amazed to see another sought after 10-inch album from the early years. I’m amazed with my luck to get the second one in less than two weeks. I’ve been searching with cvllos the five Dick Farney first 10-inch LPs for many months. So far, this is the oldest available at Loronix, released in 1954, I’m sure with the help of our community the remaining ones should come very soon.

This is a very interesting compilation sent by Dona Iara that it is not listed on any discography, at least the ones that I could check. By the way, several compilations were released in the late 80′s and most of them are pretty unknown. I don’t know if it is a matter of limited editions, but they are really worth checking. This LPs were recorded in the turn of the shift between vinyl to CD and they have a pretty good sound. This one is really obscure featuring remastered tunes of three great artists. Let’s see.

This is Joao Gilberto, Sylvia Telles & Dick Farney – Joao Gilberto, Silvia Telles & Dick Farney (1988), for EMI-Odeon, perfect for those who are giving the first steps towards Brazilian music and want to have in a glance Bossa Nova cuts from three legends. These recordings range from 1957 to 1961, as detailed on track list.

Tracks include:

01 – Desafinado – JOAO GILBERTO (1958)
02 – Dindi – SYLVIA TELLES (1959)
03 – Este Seu Olhar – DICK FARNEY (1959)
04 – O Barquinho – JOAO GILBERTO (1961)
05 – A Felicidade – SYLVIA TELLES (1959)
06 – Alguem como Tu – DICK FARNEY (1958)
07 – Insensatez – JOAO GILBERTO (1961)
08 – Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce – SYLVIA TELLES (1957)
09 – Corcovado – JOAO GILBERTO (1960)
10 – Copacabana – DICK FARNEY (1958)
11 – Estrada do Sol – SYLVIA TELLES (1958)
12 – Samba de Uma Nota So – JOAO GILBERTO (1960)
13 – Marina – DICK FARNEY (1958)
14 – Eu Sei que Vou te Amar – SYLVIA TELLES (1959)

Varios Artistas – Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde Vol. 1 | Internacional (1978)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 10 de outubro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Hello, good evening! Let’s start making the day of instrumental music lovers and fans of the legendary Eldorado, which is a Brazilian record label dedicated to instrumental music. Eldorado was active from 1981 until the early 90′s, releasing several influential albums, some of them already available at Loronix, such as the last album recorded by K-Ximbinho, among many others.

In addition from artist solo releases, Eldorado also released a very famous series called “Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde” with national and international music, always performed by Brazilian artists. Let’s see.

This is Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde Vol. 1 | Internacional (1978), for Eldorado, featuring piano solo renditions of international standards by Dick Farney, Jose Alves, Felix Wagner and Amilton Godoy, Zimbo Trio pianist. Amilton Godoy has the very good company of Rubens Barsotti (drums) and Luiz Chaves (bass), which is in fact Zimbo Trio, performing international standards, get the chance to hear three Zimbo Trio tracks never released on any other record.

Tracks include:

Actually, Charlie Parker should be credited as composer of “Yardbird Suite,” not Keith Jarrett. (Assuming it’s the commonly accepted Jazz standard.)

Os Grandes Sambas da Historia – Vol. 25 (1997)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 07 de outubro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

In 1997, Editora Globo released a series called “Historia do Samba”, very similar to “Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira” and “Serie Grandes Compositores”, released in the 70′s and already available at Loronix through a few editions.

This series has 40 volumes, each one with a CD inside. I have volumes 1 to 25, kindly sent by the mysterious Samba contributor a month ago. I decided to search for the remaining 15 volumes to start showing the whole series to Loronixers. However, it seems impossible to find these 15 missing volumes in the quality given by our mysterious contributor.

That’s why I decided that starting today, I will be releasing volumes from this series, making it by the reverse order, starting with number 25 until the last and first Volume. Meanwhile, I urge Loronixers to look for the missing volumes, so we can get the whole collection. Let’s see.

This is Os Grandes Sambas da Historia – Volume 25 (1997), for Editora Globo, featuring selected Samba songs performed by several artists. The mysterious contributor made it with truly amazing cover scans, including inside booklets with lyrics of each volume. Let’s feedback this release using comment section, I like very much this series.

Friends are asking why the 78-rpm records are not coming anymore. I’m sorry to give this answer, but I ran out of 78-rpms, not a major problem since friends are looking for new records and some contribution are scheduled to arrive in the forthcoming weeks.

Meanwhile, let’s remember the 78 rpm posts with this fantastic contribution sent by cvllos, great friend of zecalouro and a lucky LP hunter. Let’s see.

This is Dick Farney & Lucio Alves – Serie Idolos da MPB Nr. 6 (1974), for Continental, also known as “Relevo”. cvllos contribution was very useful to understand “Relevo” series, in most cases featuring Continental compilations of 78 rpm. The folks at Continental made a very nice work with this one, delivering side A with Dick Farney and side B with Lucio Alves. There are several details to highlight on each track, such as the participation of Antonio Carlos Jobim e Seu Conjunto at 12 – Casinha Pequena and a Dick Farney track recorded in Argentina with Jorge Kenny and orchestra. Do not miss track list with complimentary information.

Tracks include:

Dick Farney
01 – Copacabana (1946) (Joao de Barro / Alberto Ribeiro) – Eduardo Patane e Sua Orquestra de Cordas
02 – Somos Dois (1948) (A. Cavalcanti / Klecius / L. Antonio) – Jose Maria e Sua Orquestra
03 – Uma Loura (1951) (Herve Cordivil) – Dick Farney (piano), Dinarte (guitar) and Vidal (bass)
04 – Ranchinho de Palha (1951) (Luiz Bonfa) – Vero e Sua Orquestra
05 – Nick Bar (1951) (J. Vasconcelos / Garoto) – Vero (piano), Garoto (violao), Vidal (bass) and Trinca (drums)
06 – Alguem Como Tu (1952) (Jose Maria de Abreu / Jair Amorim) – Jorge Kenny (organ) and Orchestra (recorded in Buenos Aires, Argentina)

Lucio Alves
07 – Na Paz do Senhor (1950) (Jose Maria de Abreu / Luiz Peixoto) – Orquestra Continental
08 – Amargura (1950) (Alberto Ribeiro / Radames Gnattali) – Copinha e Sua Orquestra
09 – Nova Ilusao (1953) (Pedro Caetano / Claudionor Cruz) – Vero e Sua Orquestra
10 – Sabado em Copacabana (1951) (Carlos Guinle / Dorival Caymmi) – Vero e Sua Orquestra
11 – Valsa de uma Cidade (1954) (Ismael Netto / Antonio Maria) – Severino Araujo e Sua Orquestra

I was missing Dick Farney and I’m confident this is a great choice. I was thinking about releasing something great sent by moos, but I decided to save it for Sunday, since Monday is the day of highest traffic at Loronix. Sometimes friends ask me for a nice Dick Farney pick and my answer is another question, to know if the friend prefers Dick Farney singing or Dick Farney performing at the piano.

This album address both worlds, side A has Dick Farney singing with piano accompaniment and side B has Dick Farney performing with his usual trio formation of piano, bass and drums. Everybody asks me for a Dick Farney album and my answer is another question, which one do you prefer? Dick Farney singing or instrumental? With Noite nobody goes wrong.

This is Dick Farney – Noite (1981), for Som da Gente. It is amazing how Dick Farney performs nicely on an album recorded very close to the end of his recording career, singing and playing. The repertoire is based on American standards with the exception of 06 – Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce (Antonio Carlos Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes), simply the best instrumental rendition of this song that I ever heard. This track worth the entire album.

Tracks include:

Personnel

Dick Farney
(piano)
Hilton Valente
(piano on tracks 04 and 05)
Renato Loyola
(bass)
Toninho Pinheiro
(drums)

Track List

01 – Autumn In New York (V. Duke)
02 – Deep In a Dream (J. Van Heusen)
03 – This Love Of Mine (S. Parker / H. Sanicola / Frank Sinatra)
04 – Things We Did Last Summer (S. Cahn / J. Stine)
05 – One For My Baby (Harold Arlen / J. Mercer)
06 – Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Você (Tom Jobim / Vinicius de Moraes)
07 – Green Dolphin Street (B. Kaper)
08 – All The Things You Are (J. Kern / O. Hammerstein II)
09 – Theme For June (H. Brubeck)

Dick Farney – Dick Farney (1988)

This magnificent album features the last recordings of Dick Farney taken from a mix of concert and speech performed at MIS – Museu da Imagem e do Som, in Sao Paulo, 1987. Additionally, Dick Farney performs several songs, the songs that he like most to play, recorded at Dick Farney home by a friend, Cesar Pereira Lopes using a professional tape recorder. This record was not released commercially; it was part of a marketing initiative of a Brazilian company, Polibrasil, in the celebration of its 10th anniversary.
This is Dick Farney – Dick Farney (1988), for Polibrasil, a double album featuring a single track on disc one, side A, the last Dick Farney concert at MIS and remaining tracks the remastered home tapes recorded by Dick Farney at home through several sessions in 1975. Thanks once again Luiz Harding for sending this very hard to find album to our community, this is a very moving album for Dick Farney fans all around the world.

Tracks include:

01 – On The Sunny Side Of The Street (D. Fields / J. McHugh)
02 – Prelúdio Nº 20 de Chopin (Frederic Chopin)
03 – These Foolish Things (J. Stachey / H. Link / H. Marvell)
04 – You Go To My Head (H. Gillespie)
05 – All The Things You Are (J. Kern / O. Hammerstein II)
06 – Misty Garner (E. Garner / J. Burke)
07 – Thank You (Dave Brubeck)
08 – But Beautiful (J. Van Heusen / J. Burke)
09 – Este Seu Olhar (Tom Jobim)
10 – Disparada (Geraldo Vandré / Theo de Barros)
11 – Satin Doll (Duke Ellington)
12 – Some Day My Prince Will Come (F. E. Churchill / L. Morey)
13 – Flamingo (D. Cole / T. H. Rumdgren)
14 – I Love You (Cole Porter)
15 – A Fine Romance (J. Kern)
16 – Gentle Rain (Luis Bonfá)

Hello Lieschen,

This is not a problem, Side A Disc one is the first download, which is a single track file including the four initial songs.
Cheers, zeca

Zeca, acho que essa obra é póstuma! Inclusive no 2o LP, a voz do Dick é ouvida meio embargada, claudicante.

This was probably one of the hardest to find albums recorded by Dick Farney, actually this is the hardest Dick Farney on 12-inch, the first Dick Farney albums released at the 10-inch format seems to be near to impossible. Luiz strikes again, now with music and video. A legendary Dick Farney fan that we know will probably have breakfast tomorrow with the sound of the piano.
This is Dick Farney – Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde Nr. 2 (1975), for Odeon, the continuation of the nice Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde, already available at Loronix. The same sucessful formula, Dick Farney for advanced listeners, no bass, no drums, no singing, only Dick Farney and the piano with a repertoire of standards. In addition to the music, I’m showing a wonderful video with the complete participation of Dick Farney Trio at TV Cultura. The video has a relaxed atmosphere with Dick Farney singing and backed by Toninho (drums) and Saba (bass).

Tracks include:
01 – You Go To My Head (H. Gillespie / J. F. Coots)
02 – Autumn Leaves (Les Feuilles Mortes) (J. Kosma / J. Prevert)
03 – What’s New (B. Haggart / J. Burke)
04 – Georgia On My Mind (H. Carmichael)
05 – September Song (Kurt Weill / W. Anderson)
06 – Because Of You (A. Hammerstein / D. Wilkinson)
07 – Tea For Two (V. Youmans / I. Cassar)
08 – It Might as Well Be Spring (R. Rodgers / O. Hammerstein II)
09 – When I Fall In Love (V. Young / E. Heyman)
10 – St Louis Blues (W. C. Handy)
11 – My Funny Valentine (R. Rodgers / L. Hart)
12 – Swanee River (Old Folks At Home) (S. Forster)

Obrigado,
Gambini
PS: É possível re-postar o Dick Farney Trio – 5 Anos de Jazz? O caminho está inativo.
