Stan Getz João Gilberto – Getz/Gilberto #2 (1964)

Shame on zecalouro, Caetano sent this album a couple of months ago to our community and for reasons that I will never realize, I took it as commercial available and decided to keep it with me until availability changes. I was wrong, do not ask me, perhaps I took by default that all records from Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz collaboration would be always available. By the way, it is truly amazing that this fantastic album is no longer available in CD.

Anyway, thanks for this one Caetano and thanks once again for sending the CD version, featuring really important extras.

This is Stan Getz – Joao Gilberto – Getz/Gilberto #2 (1964), for Verve, featuring the sequel of the acclaimed Getz/Gilberto released an year before. This is a concert recorded live at Carnegie Hall in October of 1964 with Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto performing on separated sets. The extras include a couple of additional vocal cuts featuring Astrud Gilberto. Caetano said to have special attention on these extras with some conversation between the couple that really worth checking.

Tracks include:

Helcio Milito (JG), Joe Hunt (SG)

Keter Betts (JG), Gene Cherico (SG)

Gary Burtun

Joao Gilberto
(voice, violao)

Stan Getz
(sax tenor)

Astrud Gilberto

Track List

01 – Grandfather’s Waltz
02 – Tonight I Shall Sleep With a Smile On My Face
03 – Stan’s Blues
04 – Here’s That Rainy Day
05 – Samba da Minha Terra
06 – Rosa Morena
07 – Um Abraço no Bonfá
08 – Bim-bom
09 – Meditação
10 – O Pato
11 – It Might as Well be Spring
12 – Only Trust your Heart
13 – Corcovado

Attention: Last minute video featuring Joao Gilberto definitive rendition of Estate, performed at Termas de Caracalla, Rome, Italy, 1983. You cannot miss.

An interesting fact is, that in the years 1964-1966 the special guest on concerts with the Stan Getz Quartet was Carlos Lyra, only interrupted by this Carnegie Hall reunion with Joao Gilberto. Lyra performed with the Stan Getz Quartet 1964 at the Newport Festival and on tours in Europe and Japan. Unfortunaly no recording survives (but Carlos Lyra may be the guitar player on the “Getz au Go Go” Lp, not Kenny Burrell). The Newport concert was aired on radio, but did anybody record this?
Gary Burton told me the following by e-mail:
I do recall a live recording session, or maybe it was in a studio, I’m not sure. Stan typically would record the group about once a year on his own, usually a live performance of some kind. He never could convince his label to release any of these efforts, and as the years passed, the tapes were discarded. After Stan and his wife parted ways, there was a search to see if any of the tapes from several recording projects could be found, but nothing turned up. I have always assumed that they were just thrown away at some point as the Getz’s moved from house to house, etc.
If the tapes had ended up at the record label, they would have been released by now. But, since these were Stan’s own attempts to make records, the tapes were only in his possession.
Best regards, Gary
Do anybody out there know more about recordings or performances by Getz and Lyra together?

Well I’m glad to have a chance to hear this. It is surprising this is not reissued. Better safe than sorry.

Hello B.J.,
How are you?
I don’t think it is possible to buy this album from Creed Taylor’s website, the “add to cart” icon for Getz/Gilberto#2 is missing.
Take a look at and you will see how different it is.

Definitivo.
