Here we have an artist that everybody asks for an album at Loronix. It took a long time until we have the necessary to make available one of his works, but the long waiting really worth, this is one of the best albums recorded by Toninho Horta and it is amazing that Diamond Land never had a CD issue, being out of print on “CD era”, at least the far as I could search.

This is Toninho Horta – Diamond Land (1989), for Philips, featuring a true legend of the Brazilian guitar, Toninho Horta, backed by several renowned musicians, including the acclaimed Wayne Shorter.

It’s very hard to describe Toninho Horta, so I’m taking the liner notes of Diamond Land, written by Pat Metheny. I could never make better.

“Musicians everywhere love Toninho Horta’s songs. Through his work with Milton Nascimento, his own recordings and the cover versions of his tunes that have appeared on various albums throughout the past decade or so, Toninho has emerged as one of the most harmonically sophisticated and melodically satisfying Brazilian composers of recent times.
Somehow, he writes chord progressions that defy gravity, moving up when you think they’re going down. His melodies stay with you for days; you’re sure you’ve heard them before, but they are brand new. And as an arranger, he’s a master. (Not just with his own music either – check out what he does here with “Diamond Land”). As a guitarist, he’s one of the world’s great “compers” on viola. (That’s a nylon-string guitar to us gringos). He plays such great voicings with such a cool time feel… (I’ve often described him to other musicians as the Herbie Hancock of Bossa Nova guitarists). His love of jazz guitar playing is well represented here, as is his excellent singing.
In short, Toninho Horta is an incredible musician, the rare guitarist who understand harmony in its most intimate ways and – above all – one of the finest and gentlest people I’ve ever had the good fortune of knowing. Luiz, it’s really true that TH had “Diamond Land” issued on CD in US. The “Verve Forecast” label released other two amazing TH albums: “Moonstone” (with Pat Metheny on one track) and “Once I Loved” (with Billy Higgins and Gary Peacock). All of them had CD issues in the past, but are out of print worldwide, as far i am concerned. That’s the reason this post is very special.

Hello, good evening! Let’s start this Saturday with another classy contribution by cvllos, featuring Clara Sverner and Paulo Moura. It was very wise of cvllos to send this one for the weekend. It’s cold in Rio de Janeiro and this album is a perfect match, at least with my mood today. Let’s see.

This is Clara Sverner & Paulo Moura – Vou Vivendo (1986), for EMI Odeon, featuring the classic piano of Clara Sverner and the acclaimed sax player Paulo Moura performing Pixinguinha, Radames Gnattali, Chiquinha Gonzaga and Ronaldo Miranda. This is a live recording of a concert at Escola Nacional de Música, Salao Leopoldo Miguez in Rio de Janeiro. A music video by Pedro Mendes is also available with Clara Sverner and Paulo Moura performing at Sala Funarte Sidney Miller in 1983.

I was looking for music from Brazil performed by someone from outside of Brazil, but I did not want some of those once in a lifetime Bossa Nova opportunistic performance. I was looking for an album featuring an international artist with tight connections with the music from Brazil, such like Toots Thielemans, Stan Getz and many others.
I’m amazed that this CD released in 1998 has gone out of print very soon, in the other hand, I’m really happy to share another record by Lani Hall, she has a solid connection with the music from Brazil and this album is very beautiful, featuring several Brazilian artists. Let’s see.

This is Lani Hall – Brasil Nativo (1998), for BMG. Lani Hall sings in English, Portuguese and on an Amazon language that it is impossible to identify with my knowledge on tracks 01 – Tres Curimins and 05 – Brasil Nativo. Dori Caymmi has a major participation from the start until the end as arranger, vocalist and guitar player. Herb Alpert, which is Lani Hall’s husband, also deliver trumpet playing and arrangements together with Paulinho da Costa, Michael Sapiro, Heitor Pereira, Jimmy Johnson, among many others.

Someone should tell tcisalpino that I don’t have 20 years. It is dangerous, especially with a favorite of us, Lucio Alves. That’s what tcisalpino delivers today, a major update on a very hard to find original vinyl issue. Additionally, I’m delivering a video, with 9 minutes runtime, featuring Lucio Alves and Trio LM (which I never heard about) at Ensaio, TV Cultura, kindly sent by Pedro Mendes. This is Lucio Alves – Lucio Alves, Sua Voz Intima, Sua Bossa Nova, Interpretando Sambas em 3-D (1959), for Odeon, the first album recorded by Lucio Alves in the 12-inch format. I will keep my first writing this time. Lucio Alves is really nice, thanks tcisalpino. Do not miss the video.

First writing:
On my searches to prepare the first Lucio Alves release, TioSamba, Musica Americana em Bossa Nova, I read that Antonio Carlos Jobim said that Lucio Alves was a singer ahead of his time, additionally, Lucio Alves was the first person to listen to Joao Gilberto LPs, taken by the own Joao as soon as they get finished.
Two strong statements from two legends. TioSamba was really nice, but when I took this one for a try, I confess that these statements are not exaggerated. In my humble opinion, Lucio Alves is one of the greatest Brazilian. I don’t know why, his singing his really captivating. Do not ask me what is a Samba in 3-D, perhaps some mania in the late 50′s. Lucio Alves is backed by orchestra, directed and conducted by Lyrio Panicali.

Em tempo, 3-D significa Terceira Dimensão. Muito na moda, na época. Cinemas com três câmaras, para dar a ilusão de profundidade, revistas especiais para serem olhadas com óculos também especiais, enfim era uma moda buscando fazer a arte mais viva.

By the way, tcisalpino is so kind that he is right now managing another release for today, equivalent to yesterday’s Rio 65 Trio. Really great, I cannot wait longer until his upload finishes.

This is Bob Fleming – Jovens Enamorados (1965), for Musidisc. Actually, I’m making a 1971 reissue by Phonodisc, exactly the same album first issued by Musidisc. I don’t know Musidisc’s cover artwork, but this Phonodisc cover with a sax inside a tunnel is really amazing. Bob Fleming / Moacyr Silva delivers an international repertoire on side A and Brazilian songs on side B.

Ou seja, ao contrário do que afirma o Zeca, este não é um disco de Moacyr Silva, mas de Zito Righi como Bob Fleming.

From now on, I will announce my future plans at Loronix, such as I did a couple of days ago. I said I was looking for high quality media of some essential records already available at Loronix.

The response came very fast this time, tcisalpino is the fast fish; he read my comment and decided to please our community with FLAC files, the second contribution in the new format. tcisalpino says that RIO 65 Trio is a present to our community. Let’s thanks him.

This is Rio 65 Trio – Rio 65 Trio (1965), for Philips, one of the greatest Samba Jazz album ever recorded featuring Dom Salvador, Edison Machado and Sergio Barroso. Do I need to say more? I don’t think so. This is the kind of album I would select to stay in the front page when leaving to a vacation. Thanks once again tcisalpino. Friends who are new to our community, don’t think twice, this album should be listed on every serious list of top records of any kind.

E por falar em Baterista, quando tinha banda, um baterista que tocava conosco tinha aulas com um cara que é um grande baterista brasileiro, mas não lembro do nome.
Enfim, é que sempre penso se é possivel encontrar algum disco fora de catálogo de alguém…

This is the CD edition which was released some years ago in Brazil. The problem is, that track 11. “Aruanda” is missing:
A faixa “Aruanda”, presente no repertório do LP, não foi autorizada por seu autor – Geraldo Vandre -a figurar no CD.
But this track was also used for the soundtrack LP “Cronica da Cidade Amada” which was also posted on the Loronix site in 2006.
So, to get the original LP order you have to take this track from the soundtrack as track 11.

Thanks for it Frank-Oliver, what you said is the real truth and tcisalpino also warned for the missing Aruanda.
My hope is to get the vinyl first issue to make this missing track and update this post with an equivalent quality.

Hello, Good night, friends! Get set to hear something truly amazing. A Mr. X. contribution, really great, this is Amelia Brandao Neri or Tia Amelia, Brazilian pianist, born in 1897 and since the age of four, started her long time friendship with the piano.

This is Tia Amelia – A Bencao Tia Amelia (1980), for Marcus Pereira Discos, recorded by Amelia Brandao Neri at the age of 83. It is hard to describe an album like this and the story of this woman; it is amazing that she recorded this wonderful instrumental LP alone with the piano at this age. Tia Amelia got married at the age of 17 and had to stop with the piano. Her husband died when she was 25 and she had to cope with the rest of her life alone with her three daughters.
Since then, Tia Amelia dedicated all her life to music, being an active pianist and composer.

A Bencao Tia Amelia is only Tia Amelia, the piano and her compositions, mainly valsas (waltz) and choros.
It is amazing how she play the piano on such age. Tia Amelia left us three years after this release at the age of 86.

Boa, Zeca! Outro gol do Loronix esse disco de Tia Amélia.
Tia Amélia está na tradição brasileira ernestonazaretiana de piano-choro/ piano-polca/ piano/etecetera e tal, assim como Carolina Cardoso de Menezes, a que aludiu o brother e.c./spinner.
E de Ernesto Nazareth houve uma coleção de responsa gravada por Arthur Moreira Lima, que cairia lindamente no Loronix. Fica a sugestão.

Na verdade o lançamento do meio de campo foi do Mr. X. eu só recebi sozinho na pequena área sem goleiro e chutei para o gol.
Fiquei impressionado com a tocada da Tia Amelia. Essa sugestão do Arthur Moreira Lima é quentíssima. Tá fazendo muita falta. É outro grande artista que ainda não apareceu no Loronix.
Vamos trabalhar.

Foi um gol ‘na banheira, então. Mas se é a favor de Tia Amélia e Loronix, tá valendo, não vou ser eu a marcar o impedimento. Sou o Refer, mas não o referee… get the picture?
Então, esperamos outro gol, de MÃOS que seja, de Arthur Moreira Lima, que é Fluminense, declarado e doente. Melhor seria se Arthur fosse América, mas tudo bem, ainda mais tocando Nazareth, este um americano campeão de 16 e 22, que foi chamado de “A verdadeira encarnação da alma brasileira” por Heitor Villa-Lobos, que por sinal foi América até morrer!

Zecalouro,
que bom é saber que existem pessoas que preservam legados culturais tão importantes pro nosso país. Eu sou bisneto da Tia Amélia por parte de pai e tô fazendo um levantamento biográfico e da discografia dela. O seu blog já me ajudou muito.
Espero contar com a ajuda do maior número possível de “chorões” que há por aí afora.

Hello, good evening! I’m really late today, busy and also dueling with my Internet connection since yesterday. Sorry for using Loronix to say such things, but I really feel better sharing, instead of pretending that everything is fine. The quality of services in Brazil has been a tragedy, getting worse everyday. Anyway, let’s talk about happy things now.

This album is all about happiness, it is the first album recorded by this extraordinary Brazilian pianist and composer, Amelia Brandao Neri, also known as Tia Amelia. Last year we made her last album, released in 1980 when Tia Amelia had the age of 83. You can see part of Tia Amelia LP photo in your left and reach her last album here.

This is Tia Amelia com a Banda Vila Rica – Velhas Estampas (1959), for Odeon, a nice and late first album by Tia Amelia, featuring only compositions of her own. The album title was taken from a TV show hosted by Tia Amelia in TV-RIO, where Tia Amelia played piano and remembered stories from the old time. Velhas Estampas brings nice music to Loronixers, really different from everything we are used to hear.

Eu já conhecia o disco da Tia Amélia de 1980. Ouvindo agora “Velhas Estampas” fico mais impressionado com o virtuosismo pianístico da Tia, que nos remete, não para 1959, mas para o final do XIX. Loro, obrigado pelo disco. O seu papel tem sido mais importante do que qualquer instituto de memória. Digo isto sem exagero. Abraços, Marcio.

Yesterday, my Internet connection got lost in the middle of the night and I could not make the final post of the day, being back only a couple of hours ago. That’s why I’m back in the middle of this Wednesday to show friends another recorded by Tito Madi in the “A Fossa” series, the last album from the sequel. Let’s see.

This is Tito Madi – Cancao de Amor | A Fossa Vol. 4 (1974), for London. It was nice to hear Tito Madi rendition to Sangue Latino, a 1974 blockbuster by Secos e Molhados, he made it really different from the original. Little I know about personnel in this recording session and it seems it is a rule at the sequel, although we could not check what we have at A Fossa Vol. 2, which is the one with the nicest cover.
