Hello, Good Night! Nelson Motta, a Brazilian producer, composer that was part of Bossa Nova, wrote some years ago that Brazil is essentially a country of female singers, using Loronix language, a country of Divas, Brazilian Divas. We have some nice examples here. I will not forget Tuca, she was rather unknown and after being presented here, she certainly got several extra enthusiasts. On a same or larger scale, the same applies to Thelma. Anyway, I'm not sure if we will have the same phenomenon this time, but at least several Loronixers will be taken by surprise with this post, such like Caetano Rodrigues did with me.

This is Marcia - In Bossa (no date), for Malagueta. I don't know how Caetano makes his findings; I searched the Internet several times today and could not find consistent information about this singer. The little I know: this is Marcia debut LP and she knows how to make it, singing with passion and performing great renditions to Bossa Nova standards. Marcia has the accompaniment of Paulinho Lemos (acoustic guitar), Diego Ebeller (piano), Wilma Keuchgueriam (flute), Leo Toniche (drums), Jose Lima (bass) and Marcia Barros (voice).

This is getting interesting. The Marcia that you have here, with the album "Marcia-In Bossa", is shown in more than one place along with the albums that I listed for the "other" Marcia. In fact they show the same cover along with the covers for the other 4 albums that I listed.
I will keep searching.

I'm back with another Caetano Rodrigues LP, once again, a record that I never heard before. Main performer is Mario Albanese, an artist that I could only get along with Loronix and the advice of Refer. Among other things, Refer told me that Mario Albanese was the creator of a new rhythm, Jequibau. Thanks also to Budi Garcia, he made me happy a couple of days ago saying that Loronix helped him out to discover Jequibau, saying also that he will start hunting international albums based on Jequibau music. Let's see what Caetano has to show us this time.

This is Mario Albanese - Coisas de Amor (1962), for Chantecler, featuring Elcio Alvares Orchestra. This record was released and record before Albanese's Jequibau creation. It will be really nice to see the early Mario Albanese before Jequibau years. Thanks Caetano for this release.

I think it's one of those hard to find albums, featuring Albanese, as you said, before the Jequibau years. It surprised me, I've never found nothing about it. In the future, I would like to tell You the history of jequibau's conception, by Albanese and Pereira, as Pereira told me.
For the moment, thanks a lot.
PS: in a single year you made more for spreading the unheard voices of Brazilian music than people responsible for cultural public policies could, in a long time.

You probably remember our last Challenge, a picture of a female singer with a group. People who tried to answer the challenge were successful on guessing the singer, Elis Regina. However, with a single exception nobody could even say the name of the group.

This posts comes to introduce you to a new Loronixer, Marcello Campos, Journalist, author of the book Week End no Rio - Cinco Decadas (e meia) de Conjunto Melodico Norberto Baldauf and a friend that comes to play an important role at Loronix, improving our knowledge of the music from the South Region of Brazil, the nest of several renowned artists.

Everybody can easily name the artists that came from that region, but nobody can say how things happened and what is the background the artists from that region had before they got famous. Marcello is the right guy to share these things that we do not know. He has a book, written in Portuguese, portraying one of those artists, Conjunto Melodico de Norberto Baldauf, which has a broaden approach of those years, with additional details on Elis Regina, Primo, among many others. The book can be purchased with Marcello though his telephone number, which is +55-51- 9833-0162 or by email, noticia@portoweb.com.br, you can optionally reach zecalouro at zecalouro@gmail.com. Caetano Rodrigues performs the role of main contributor on Marcello's book, as several other music books in Brazil.

This is Conjunto Melodico Norberto Baldauf - Parole (1968), for Philips, the second LP of this band, active for more than 50 years. Parole is a delicious and dancing album from a group that I never had the chance to hear before, full of organ and vibes influenced by Beatles, Italian music, etc. Marcello says that Parole has the first recording of With a Little Help from my Friends, a Beatles song from the legendary album Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. I think you can get further details with Marcello and his book. Just want to warn Loronixers to stay tuned, Marcello's collaborations are coming and it is a unique chance to improve our knowledge of the music from Brazilian South.

Hi Zeca,
thank you for this album. I always looked at the huge Baldauf Discography at Sombras, but I never heard a tone of the music until now. Norberto Baldauf made LP`s since 1955. The LP "Week-end no Rio" (1957) has also a great cover.

Just to announce that rain is falling in Rio de Janeiro and the dry times are over. zeca is sleeping and one of the thinks that he likes most is to take a rain bath, he looks like a punk after the rain. Maybe tomorrow I will make it.

Anyway, it is perfect when we have a contributor that is also a journalist. Contributions come with information, well written, making work easy. It is just a matter of zecalourize (makes the text on zecalouro's style) the text and provides the information needed to Loronixers. However, I have also a great pleasure to find information by myself and really like such challenges, but in a rush time such like this week, contributions like this one from the great Marcello Campos are really handy.

This is Primo e Seu Conjunto - Selecao Dancante (1957), for Mocambo. This is the legendary Primo, well known to us by his later recordings Sambossa (1965), Pinta o Sete (1966) and the ones as Primo Quintet. Selecao Dancante is Primo debut LP, a very rare release, gently provided by Marcello Campos. Primo also lead the legendary Conjunto Flamingo, available at Loronix by Caetano Rodrigues. Thanks Marcello for this nice record that I'm sure it is only available for a few privileged friends.

This is the international and always inquisitive Bossa Nova post of the day provided by Caetano Rodrigues, The Great. Caetano show us Paul Smith, jazz pianist, widely known as Ella Fritzgerald's conductor and pianist, an active studio musician with a brilliant technique. Durval Ferreira first told me about Paul Smith. He said that the sound he wanted for his Os Gatos group was based on Paul Smith's Liquid Sounds - the guitar, flute and trombone playing lead lines.

I cannot remember how many albums by Dick Farney showing his "singing side" are already available at Loronix. Perhaps without noticing, I've been picking Dick Farney instrumental side more frequently. This nice LP comes to fulfill this gap, showing Dick Farney singing on a very reduced accompaniment by his own piano and a small combo. Let's see how it works.

This is Dick Farney - Dick Farney (1973) for Odeon. Little is know about this album recording session that shows Farney singing as a performing on a nightclub. I'm a big fan of Dick Farney and perhaps not the right guy to describe this album, beautiful and with a adequate touch of sadness on his singing and piano playing. What you see at this nice cover is exactly what you get, a great opportunity for those who wants to get along with his art of singing.

I love Dik Farney instrumental albuns. He has lot of wonderful ones, such as the marvelous "5 anos de jazz" and other ones pre-posted here.
I think Dick Farney wanted to be recognized by his great piano jazz playing. But in some kind of way he was cursed by his beautiful voice.

I think this Saturday is the day to show the great and forgotten music available on zecalouro's shelf. I don't like to run Loronix under controls, lists, catalogs, etc. Great part of the pleasure of being here is to make the selections based on instincts and even associating the experiences I had on the day with the albums posted tonight. It is a way to present this great music with passion, giving a personal touch in the process. Caetano runs on the same chaotic pattern, making his selections on what HE wants to hear, this is great.

This is Jose Briamonte - Briamonte Orchestra (1970), for Elenco, another LP that deserves special attention, highly recommended by Caetano Rodrigues. It is weird to show this album after ten months of Loronix. I work together with Sabadabada to have the last Briamonte release; Sambeco (check Loronix Find It!) while this gem was under my nose for months. Really great LP produced by Roberto Menescal and arranged by Maestro Briamonte.

Nice to fill in the gaps sometimes. I knew there must an album of the rest of this as Zip and Atmosfera are both from the Rede Globo novela A Proxima Atracao, one of the earliest soundtracks from Globo when they still released via Philips with Nelson Motta's executive production.

Let's move to the international Bossa Nova post of the day, always a great surprise by Caetano Rodrigues. Here we go on a singer that I have some child memories of hearing it at my parents’ place, Vic Damone, an Italian-America smooth baritone that was compared to Frank Sinatra in his early years. I also remember Vic Damone as a film actor and perhaps he is more identified in Brazil as an actor, in spite of being essentially a singer.

This is Vic Damone - Stay with Me (1966), for RCA Victor, Vic Damone tribute to Bossa Nova, featuring five Antonio Carlos Jobim tunes, How Insensitive, Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars, Meditation, The Girl From Ipanema and Once I Loved. Mario Albanese is also listed with Pretty Butterfly. Mon was looking the covers sent by Caetano today and she stopped on this one asking if this Captain James T. Kirk record was good or not. Mon is always right. In fact, Vic Damone looks very much like Willian Shattner, the legendary Captain James T. Kirk from Star Trek Series and Movie Film.

Although this release doesn't quite compare to the Sinatra/Jobim sessions, I still enjoyed it immensely. I was pleasantly surprised by his cover of "Stay With Me" which I think is a Quincy Jones composition from the "Walk, Don't Run" soundtrack. You and Caetano never cease to amaze me with the breadth of your collections. Bravo!!!
PS Your William Shatner comment was amusing, but I rather think Vic resembles Roy Scheider (another American actor) on the cover photo.

Vic Damone was also known widely in the U.S. as "Mr. Coppertone" as he did the radio and tv ads of that sun tanning lotion for years. He could also be seen on billboards for the advertising of the product as well.

Não me parece que identificamos Vic Damone mais como ator... para mim, ele é o sortudo que se casou com Pier Angeli, e que é um bom cantor romântico.
Lembro-me somente de 2 músicas de Damone que tocaram no rádio, 'An Affair To Remember' e 'Tender Is The Night' — na época de 'Tender Is The Night' (about 1963) Damone veio cantar em SPaulo.

Although I do not understand the language, I got enough of Refer's comments to know that he spoke of Vic singing the title track from what is my wife's all time favorite film (a real chick flick), "An Affair To Remember". It was nice to see this album as Vic is also one of her favorite vocalists.

On my comments I said that to me VD is the lucky guy who married Pier Angeli and that he had only 2 songs that got some air-play in Brazil, 'An Affair...' and 'Tender Is The Night'. VD was in Sao Paulo when 'Tender Is The Night' was strong on the radio.

It is incredible! I'm now seeking the foreign recordings of the jequibau rhythm, unhappily more accepted out than here in Brazil. Posted a few days ago, the album More Brazilian Byrd, and now this Stay with Me, are wonderful coincidences...

I have been looking long and hard for this album. I remember my father listening to it many years ago when I was in my teens. Though my musical tastes gravitate more towards classic rock and 70's folk pop and jazz- the big band vocalists of the 50's and 60's have a place in my heart. I think this album is pitch perfect in tone and delivery. Not at all overly produced- with the right balance of the bossanova sound and Vics's own stylistic takes....This is far and away one of the most romantic albums I've ever listened to. Thank You for making it available to me once more. My fathers memory is just a download away!

This should fit to all Loronixers preferences to close this Friday, Erlon Chaves and Paul Mauriat. Thanks once again Trix, for supporting this decision with your awesome knowledge of the music from Brazil and also for your patience to understand the crazy criterion that flows inside of the disturbed nut-sized mind of this parrot.

We have to remember that Maestro Paul Mauriat has passed away last year. By that time, Loronixers asked for this record, unfortunately, I could not make it. So, let's take it as a late tribute to Paul Mauriat Music.

This is Erlon Chaves & Paul Mauriat - As Dez Cancoes Medalha de Ouro (1973), for Philips, featuring orchestra arrangements by Paul Mauriat and Erlon Chaves to 10 top-hit songs of 1973. For those who are looking for Paul Mauriat arrangements, side A (tracks 01 to 05) is the choice. Side B (tracks 06 to 10) belongs to Erlon Chaves. Really nice pick. I'm having a felling of making two posts with a single one. Musicians to each maestro are different, both with his own orchestra.

Hello, Good Night! We had yesterday an album from a Brazilian Maestro that we never released at Loronix before, the album Bossa with a Beat, by Maestro Expósito e Sua Orquestra. We are starting with the same idea today, presenting a new Maestro with a very different album without the traditional approach of orchestras and Samba. Let's see.

This is Orlando Silveira - S.O.S Band It (1974), for Parlophone. S.O.S stands for Som Orlando Silveira and the cover artwork is the best definition of the sound that you will hear inside it, 70's grooves, very dancing, a blend of brass with soul music. The friends who like the Sounds of the 70's, such like Mr. G. and Mr. Bapt should be pleased with this release and I hope they come to tell us a little bit more of this unusual session by Orlando Silveira.
