Hello, good evening! Let’s start making the day of instrumental music lovers and fans of the legendary Eldorado, which is a Brazilian record label dedicated to instrumental music. Eldorado was active from 1981 until the early 90′s, releasing several influential albums, some of them already available at Loronix, such as the last album recorded by K-Ximbinho, among many others.

In addition from artist solo releases, Eldorado also released a very famous series called “Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde” with national and international music, always performed by Brazilian artists. Let’s see.

This is Um Piano ao Cair da Tarde Vol. 1 | Internacional (1978), for Eldorado, featuring piano solo renditions of international standards by Dick Farney, Jose Alves, Felix Wagner and Amilton Godoy, Zimbo Trio pianist. Amilton Godoy has the very good company of Rubens Barsotti (drums) and Luiz Chaves (bass), which is in fact Zimbo Trio, performing international standards, get the chance to hear three Zimbo Trio tracks never released on any other record.

This night was very special and deserves to be closed with a special artist. Sivuca is a very special artist; he is part of a group of a few selected artists that everybody likes. Every Sivuca album I spin makes me feel better, saving those days that you are not in the mood of anything. Today is not the case, but as I said, it is a special day.

This is Sivuca – Vou Vida Afora (1982), for Copacabana, featuring the very special guest Quarteto em Cy on tracks 04 – Imaginacao and 07 – Arapua Fazendo Mel and Lucinha Lins on track 09 – Bailado, featuring arrangements by Ivan Lins. Such like the last Copacabana Sivuca album from 1979, Sivuca sings, which is something unique from my perspective. Personnel listing was not delivered by Copacabana, but Sivuca plays accordion in all tracks, including the instrumental tracks 05, 06 and 10.

In order to keep the real identity of participants protected, names of birds from the psittacidae family were used and Maracana was a bird of my childhood that flew away and never returned home. Maracana is how the aratinga leucophthalmus is called in Brazil. There is a beautiful picture of a leucophthalmus in your left.


This is Os Devaneios – Devaneando (no date), for Master     Sound, which is a pretty obscure label that recorded this nice to hear instrumental album full of Hammond B3 organ 
grooves. I know the existence of a group with the name Os Devaneios in Rio de Janeiro, but I’m not sure if they are the same, since no information was found about this album. If someone has additional info about this record, please let us know in comment section. Thanks for the cover contest participants and everybody who engage visiting our image gallery.

Hello, good evening! It is very hard to start over after a nice release such as we had yesterday with the recording of A Noite do Amor, do Sorriso e da Flor. I never thought this concert would be available to our community and everything happened by coincidence. Anyway, the show must go on, and it is important to keep the pace. That’s why I’m showing a very influential artist that never had a release at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Waldyr Azevedo – Um Cavaquinho Acontece (1960), for Continental, featuring Waldyr Azevedo, one of the most important musicians on the Choro genre. Several essential Choro compositions, such as Brasileirinho, Delicado, Pedacinhos do Ceu, among others, were written by Waldyr Azevedo, a virtuoso on cavaquinho that had a very active recording career that spanned decades, starting in 1940 and ending in 1980, the year of his passing. Um Cavaquinho Acontece feature well-known Waldyr Azevedo compositions and it is a nice way to start promoting the works of this great Brazilian musician.

This cover and post title is self-explanatory and I think nobody will ready these lines. It is not necessary to clean your glasses or schedule a visit to your doctor, what you see is exactly what you get, and I will be very straightforward to do not waste your time.

This is A Noite do Amor, do Sorriso e da Flor – Faculdade de Arquitetura (1960), the anthological event produced by Ronaldo Boscoli, considered the first Bossa Nova Festival, featuring renowned Brazilian artists on a very early stage of their career supported by Roberto Menescal (guitar), Luiz Carlos Vinhas (piano), Luiz Paulo (bass), Helcio Milito (drums) and Bebeto (sax).

The track list has some failures and I hope our community helps to realize the exact figures in terms of songs names and performers. The sound quality is not perfect, but if you take in from an historical perspective, every second of this event worth the hearing. I would like to thanks all the friends involved on this post, a very important accomplishment to our community.

Wow, this seems to be sensational.
Another unknown recording of one of the major events in the history of Bossa Nova, only to compare with the Bon Gourmet recordings or the Carnegie Hall concert of 1962. I remember, that in Ruy Castro`s Bossa Nova book were many informations about this concert and the names of the singers and musicians who partcipated in this event. Thank you very much to Zeca and all who are involved to bring to us this wonderful recordings.

I’m sorry to disappoint you, friends, but I have quite the same questions regarding this concert. I heard they were not expecting so many people attending and got surprised with the big audience. Additionally the concert was held on the facilities of a university, not inside a “controlled” place such like the Au Bon Gourmet, for instance.
My question is, how this concert was recorded on such good quality with the resources available in 1960?
I spoke with people that were there – privileged people by the way – and they could not answer to this issue.
Anyway, it is history and for those who understand Portuguese, the experience is much more interesting because it is possible to hear some conversations in the background that are really authentically to essays such like these ones.

Parabéns por esta raridade. Algumas correções: Quem canta as três primeiras canções é a Claudette Soares. Na faixa Menina Feia a Norma Benguel divide os vocais com o Trio Irakitan e finalmente, a música Oceano Guiomar é cantada pelo paulista Caetano Zamma. E a foto é mesmo de outro show anterior, o “Primeiro Festival de Samba Session”, também na Faculdade Nacional de Arquitetura, em 22/9/59.

Estranho tudo isso. O Ruy Castro reproduz um cartaz (ou coisa que o valha) com os nomes de Rosana (Toledo), Nana Caymmi e Nara Leão. Mais adiante diz que houve espaço pra todo mundo, repetindo o nome de Nara Leão e citando Claudette Soares. Se todas essas cantaram, algumas não estão no disco. Problemas técnicos, talvez? Ou algumas não cantaram, apesar de presentes? Ou nem todas estiveram realmente presentes?
Parece que a Sylvia Telles decididamente não estava com essa turma.

Ruy Castro confirms, that “Lamento no morro” is sung by Astrud Gilberto. It is also right, that Sylvia Telles appears in Carlos Lyra`s show on the same day. I think Claudette Soares sings “Sambop”, because she also sings it on the “Nova Geracao em Ritmo de Samba” album. Also in the show were Rosana Toledo, Nara Leao, Pedrinho Mattar, Tom Jobim and trumpet player Bill Horne.
All were accompanied by Menescal`s group “with Eumir Deodato on piano”(Ruy Castro), but Vinhas plays also piano in the show.

I think there were two shows on two different nights: May, 20th and May, 21st, because the poster facsimile shows the date of 20th. Probably some artists sung only in one of these shows, that’s why Rosana Toledo, Nara Leão and others don’t appear in the recording. According to Ruy Castro, probably the author of the recording was Chico Pereira (the official photographer of Odeon Label), which had as a hobby to record some live or not official Bossa Nova presentations. Maybe there are other hidden jewels like this one…

After hearing it carefully, I agree that the singer of the first tunes is Claudette Soares not Sylvia Telles. The information about Caetano Zama is also right, he is also on the Carnegie Hall 1962 record and this is the same voice. The last title is not “Insensatze” but “Meditacao”.

Depois de tantas dúvidas acho que nós mesmos esclarecemos tudo: quem canta as tres primeiras faixas é a Claudette Soares, ouvi, ouvi e ouvi e dou a minha mão à palmatória: é a Claudette. O resto acho que já foi esclarecido por todos os outros comentários, inclusive o mais importante: foram realmente duas noites e os outros artistas estão em outra fita. I would like to understand why albums like this one are released, gone out of print and being kept unknown for many people, even those who collect Brazilian music. This is another great contribution by AdHoc, a gorgeous LP recorded by Miucha for Continental in 1989 that never had a CD reissue. I admit that I never heard about this one, and probably you did not also. AdHoc transition from classical to popular was great.

This is Miucha – Miucha (1989), for Continental, featuring the very special guests Pablo Milanes at track 01 – Buenos Dias America and Miucha’s daughter Bebel Gilberto at my favorite so far, track 06 – Saudosismo (Caetano Veloso). AdHoc highlights the overall music quality, the repertoire selection, arrangements and Miucha singing, which is really awesome. There are also four very early compositions by the Brazilian guitarist Guinga in partnership with Paulo Cesar Pinheiro. AdHoc delivers nice covers scans, including personnel listing with musicians identified by track, which I will list here as a whole. Thanks Adhoc, you really Rocks!

Well this has been released on CD in Japan. I paid megabucks for it. I knew I should have waited. Mine has a different cover, however. It’s a painting of her, in a similar pose. Which is the original?
For me this album is especially notable for the four Guinga ineditas – it was recorded just before Guinga began his recording career, although he’d been writing songs since the early ’70s.

It was also released on CD in France around 1990 (apparently that’s the version posted here). Both the French and the Japanese CDs are unavailable in the major online retailers, which means that they’re out of print. As for the cover, I’ve never seen the original Brazilian LP, but Pablo Milanes who played in the album displays the “French” cover in his web site. It probably means it’s the original.
If you don’t mind my curiosity, when and where did you buy your CD and how much is “megabucks”?

I bought it maybe six months ago on eBbay from someone in Japan, for about US$35. (Of course, the US dollar was worth a lot more then versus the Canadian dollar. Today it doesn’t seem all that expensive!)

Just a footnote to zecalouro’s comments:
“Solitude” is in different mood (no wordplay) compared to the other tracks of the album. This piano and voice rendition of Duke Ellington’s standard was recorded in New York City with pianist Albert Dailey and with the legendary electronic music pioneer Wendy Carlos as sound engineer. Was it a one-song session? Or was it part of an abandoned project? Are there more songs from this session in a vault somewhere out there? Miúcha can tell.
Footnote to the footnote: Wendy Carlos was also sound engineer for João Gilberto’s 1973 LP (see Loronix post dated 8/14/2007), arguably, his best. Every sound detail is rendered with such an acute clarity that the perception of the rhythm is enhanced to the point of being almost hypnotic. This unique sound quality of João’s 1973 album stem in direct line from Wendy Carlos’ own recordings. In the late sixties and early seventies, she (well, actually he, at that point of his/her life, and under the name of Walter Carlos) recorded a series of seminal albums of electronic music in collaboration with Robert Moog, notably “Switched-On Bach”, featuring a synthesized baroque orchestra. Many other albums followed, including the OST for Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining”. This music still sounds amazing. Check her web site.

Albert Dailey played the piano in all tracks of “The Best of Two Worlds” (1976), the second Stan Getz / João Gilberto album (with Miucha). Actually, he played a lot with Stan Getz in the mid-70s. That’s where his Brazilian connection comes from.

Hello, good evening! Let’s start this Sunday using that idea of showing important musicians never released before at Loronix, such as we did with that Saraiva debut LP a couple of days ago. We are showing this time a clarinet player, Renato Tito, active on recordings from the late 50′s until the 70′s and perhaps a great finding to our community. Let’s see.

This is Renato Tito e Seu Conjunto Teleco-Teco – Chorinhos em HI-FI (1959), for Discobras. This is Renato Tito debut LP and although released by the “Para Dancar” label Discobras, Chorinhos em HI-FI is a beautiful and very old instrumental album in the Choro style.

Renato Tito clarinet playing is beautiful and the repertoire brings a nice selection of Choros, including one of Caetano Rodrigues favorite tunes, Espinha de Bacalhau, by Maestro Severino Araujo. Renato Tito has the accompaniment of “Conjunto Teleco-Teco” with not credited musicians.

In 1997, Editora Globo released a series called “Historia do Samba”, very similar to “Historia da Musica Popular Brasileira” and “Serie Grandes Compositores”, released in the 70′s and already available at Loronix through a few editions.

This series has 40 volumes, each one with a CD inside. I have volumes 1 to 25, kindly sent by the mysterious Samba contributor a month ago. I decided to search for the remaining 15 volumes to start showing the whole series to Loronixers. However, it seems impossible to find these 15 missing volumes in the quality given by our mysterious contributor.

That’s why I decided that starting today, I will be releasing volumes from this series, making it by the reverse order, starting with number 25 until the last and first Volume. Meanwhile, I urge Loronixers to look for the missing volumes, so we can get the whole collection. Let’s see.

This is Os Grandes Sambas da Historia – Volume 25 (1997), for Editora Globo, featuring selected Samba songs performed by several artists. The mysterious contributor made it with truly amazing cover scans, including inside booklets with lyrics of each volume. Let’s feedback this release using comment section, I like very much this series.

This post is to show my commitment to deliver a unforgettable Samba Saturday tomorrow. Friends like moos and many other Samba enthusiasts are getting disappointed with 3 non-Samba weekends at Loronix and there is nothing more associated with Samba than Clara Nunes. Let’s see.

This is Clara Nunes – Guerreira (1978), for Odeon. We have here a late album by Clara Nunes, featuring a mature artist with total control of his interpretation and beautiful voice. The first track gives the album title and worth the entire record. I’m not knowledgeable on Clara Nunes discography, so I’m taking in consideration my listening experience and this one is so far the most pleasant Clara Nunes I have ever heard. Personnel features a constellation of Brazilian musicians with three Maestros in charge of arrangements, as highlighted on track list.

We have been with great Brazilian sax players since Loronix beginning, such like Paulo Moura, Moacyr Silva, Zito Righi, Juarez Araujo and many others. However, some others musicians that dedicated his life to this instrument or this family of instrument did not reach our website already.

This post comes to show one of these artists that never had a career album made available to our community, although active on recordings or studio sessions. I think that Saraiva is a great start to this series, I could not find much info about him, but he recorded several albums, being this one his first. Let’s see.

This is Saraiva – Sobre o Ritmo das Ondas (1964), for Continental, presented here by a mid-70′s Phonodisk reissue. Saraiva does not keep his playing connected with a given style, delivering Sambas, Boleros and mostly Choros. You will not find Bossa Nova standard tunes at Sobre o Ritmo das Ondas, all tracks are composed by Luiz dos Santos, which is probably the own Saraiva. I think Loronixers will receive Saraiva with enthusiasm; this is a very nice record, released in the Bossa Nova age with a repertoire of Choros, a genre that almost disappeared during the 60′s.
