This is a collectors vinyl pursuit, the debut album from the sextet Bossa Rio - not to be confused with Sergio Mendes Bossa Rio Sextet and the album Voce Ainda Nao Ouviu Nada - on its original LP version from 1970. Bossa Rio was discovered and produced by Sergio Mendes.

I told you, Caetano is in charge and he could not make it better starting with Radames Gnattali, preparing the field with the obscure and above the average Conjunto Newton and closing the day with a sought after LP by many Bossa Nova collectors, another of those albums that everybody look at Caetano's book guessing how it should be. Now it is time to check your expectations with the music, as it was recorded in 1963. Thanks once again Caetano for each album you show us.

This is Geraldo Trio - Bossa G (1963), for Chantecler. I never heard about a second album by Geraldo Trio or any other recording by Jose Geraldo, which is the full name of Geraldo Trio leader. Personnel information is not available and I don't have any evidence which instrument Geraldo plays on his trio. Geraldo wrote liner notes at back cover, but does not help much on adding more information.

This could be incredible , but I'm 95% sure that Kenny Burrell plays guitar in this lovely, délicate and fresh recording. In fact, he recorded several times in Brasil in 1962 for local friends - of whom Geraldo de sà, a pianist that he met in New-York 5 years before - but could not appear under his own name because he was under contract with US labels. Those who know the "Impulse" Coleman Hawkins Bossa Album shall agree with me. It'is easy to recognize here the very fine Burrell touch.
And thanks a million times to Caetano and Zeca for providing us such beautiful things!

O Piano ta desafinado e o pianista me parece inseguro demais e erra muito
O violão tocado em algumas faixas me parece o mesmo do Mr Samba e Seus Skindos, na minha opinião só ele é profissional aqui.
O cara que toca violão não é o mesmo
que toca guitarra em outras faixas

Infelizmente concordo com você, anônimo, a coisa aqui não vai bem. Pixinguinha não merecia tal versão 'chinesa' de "Carinhoso", nem Burrell a comparação com esta guitarrinha despretensiosa que aqui ouvimos. O que desafina nesse piano são os blocos 'chineses' que ele "erra" ao tocar as melodias (não só em "Carinhoso").
Fui na do primeiro comentário e me dei mal.
Acontece.

e mostrei pra ele...e ele me disse isso mesmo...o cara erra mesmo, toca os blocos tudo em quartas
E me falou de um Pianista que tocava na Noite de São Paulo que era mais ou menos assim....chutava pra caramba....mas não se lembra do nome.

Here we go on another lost treasures from the 60's, selected by Caetano Rodrigues. I think nobody can contribute with additional information about this group and this fantastic record. Conjunto Newton Samba Bossa is from a city close to Sao Paulo, Ribeirao Preto. Perhaps they were kings of Ribeirao Preto ballrooms at that time and had the chance to make this album. Actually, they deserve the "king" credit. Let's see what we have here.

This is Conjunto Newton Samba-Bossa - Orgao Bossa e Balanco (1966), for Continental. Conjunto Newton remembers me Os Poligonais from the same Sao Paulo, but without their jazz sophistication. Orgao Bossa e Balanco is a very hard to describe album, take it for a try, it is dancing and performed by awesome musicians that I could not check if they could follow a career as musicians. This is one of the most difficult reviews I had to write at Loronix, so I will let you with Conjunto Newton Samba-Bossa and their first and only album.

Caetano sent this LP to us and now I cannot skip a day without listening to it with zecalouro. They are nice guys. I felt very sad when I read the collapsed early, in 1964. Anyway, some of their albums are available and this one is a great Caetano's pick with the boys making a deep dive into the Bossa Nova hype.

This is The Hi-Lo's - The Hi-Lo's Happen to Bossa Nova (1963), for Reprise. Funny and really competent musicians making unique vocalizations on top of Bossa Nova. By the way, Laurindo Almeida is in charge of linear notes and says that all arrangements are from Clare Fischer. I don't know who made the English lyrics to Brazilian tunes, but the one in charge did a great job. I'm asking for AMG help on The Hi-Lo's bio. Caetano, this is a fantastic album, thanks for this nice pick. Tracks include:

AMG Bio:
The Hi-Lo's were one of the more creative and influential male vocal quartets of the 1950s, matching intricate harmonies with standards that were given big band-pop arrangements. Forming in Los Angeles in the early 1950s, they began recording in 1953, just in time for the LP era -- an important consideration since The Hi-Lo's did not have huge success in the singles market. They were all over television in the 1950s, appearing on 39 episodes of The Rosemary Clooney Show alone, as well as the shows of Steve Allen, Nat "King" Cole, Pat Boone and others. In the studio, they worked with talented arrangers like Frank Comstock and Marty Paich, and hit their commercial peak with three Top 20 albums on Columbia in 1957 (one recorded with Clooney). Their inventive shadings and the wide range (particularly in the upper register) were, as is well-known, influences on Brian Wilson, and also, as is much less well-known, John Phillips. Wilson and Phillips would apply some of that harmonic influence to recordings with their groups, The Beach Boys and The Mamas And The Papas. Recent jazz-pop groups such as The Manhattan Transfer also have a significant debt to The Hi-Lo's.

Perhaps I'm having a good relationship with Rio de Janeiro, since in the last days we had covers, videos and pictures based on Rio landscapes. Maybe Caetano is missing Rio, this is another of his amazing and never seen before records. Actually, Brasil '66 is a compilation on side B and part of a given album by the mighty Maestro Erlon Chaves. Let's check what we have here.

This is Brasil '66 (1966), for Fermata, featuring Erlon Chaves, Zimbo Trio, Manfredo Fest, Paulinho Nogueira, Ely Arcoverde, Bossa Jazz Trio and Luiz Chaves e seu Conjunto. The whole side A with six songs features Erlon Chaves e Sua Orquestra, while each track of side B is taken by these top-notch instrumental musicians. Zeca, só não descobri sobre o Ely Arcoverde, mas todos os demais artistas desse album são não-cariocas. Entretanto os temas, e a bela capa, fazem referência direta ao Rio. É mais um pequeno detalhe interessante.

yes, I have Barouh's album Vivre (this Japan Cd release) : I also have the Barouh CD Saudade which includes the song Saudade with Baden Powell on guitar (they tell it is the first recorded french Bossa Nova )Do you want it? we can talk about. I think Vivre is out of print.

Everyday I learn something that I don't know at Loronix and today was a day that I learned a lot of things, as follows:

a. You can have the best equipment available at the marketplace, but if you save your money buying ordinary cables instead of the best you can find, your last generation equipment will deliver gramophone results. I'm testing a new cable with this new Caetano package, if you think the quality has improved, this is the reason.

b. Sansa Trio Vol. 2 has Airto Moreira on drums replacing the nice drummer fellow of Volume 1.

c. Maestro Jose Briamonte is the piano player and probably the leader of Sansa Trio.

d. Airto Moreira makes the difference and makes a great contribution on Volume 2, which is much better than Volume 1.

e. I need to take a time and list the albums I loose hope to find and them compare with this Caetano Rodrigues package, which is the one that brings the hardest to find stuff.

f. We need to write comments and give feedback to the great work Caetano is making to Loronixers. Tomorrow, I will make a repost on that educational video.

I have been with this record for a while and it is so good and so hard to find that you will blame it zecalouro for not making it earlier. This is a very old Caetano Rodrigues contributions and I'm glad that Caetano remember it on a phone call yesterday.

This is Izio Gross - Noa Noa (1998), for Mix House. Noa Noa is a very hard to find out of print CD recorded in South Africa by the Brazilian Maestro Izio Gross that features Airto Moreira and Jose Neto. This is the second Izio Gross album at Loronix and I was surprised to know with this CD that Izio Gross released several records while outside Brazil. I'm not talking about a few CDs, but more than ten albums on a solid international career.

If you are Sivuca fan you will probably remember an old contribution by Caetano Rodrigues, a 10-inch album recorded in 1961, Sivuca - Samba Nouvelle Vague. I did not mention that time, but Samba Novelle Vague has a special connection with this album, Silvio Silveira accompanied Sivuca. Now it is the time of swapping positions, Silvio Silveira is the main performer and Sivuca is the special guest. By the way, what a really special guest!

This is Silvio Silveira - Silvio Silveira e i Suoi Ritmi Brasiliani - Bossa Nova Ad Alta Quota (no date), for Barclay. There is no problem with this record, except it is a really hard to find item, even impossible to track down at Goggle or auction sites. The Lucky friends that had the chance to know Caetano's book will probably remember this record and this cover listed there on a special place. Caetano loves this record that has the participation of the legendary Sivuca in all tracks with all tricks, playing accordion and using his voice as an instrument.

Tomorrow is Friday and for those who are reading this post before going to work don't skip it, this album will make you drive until work alive and kicking. If you miss it, don't worry and make it on Monday. This is the kind of music that saves a day and Loronix has been in fault with Elza Soares, the last time she had an album at Loronix was last year, December 1st.

This is Elza Soares - Elza Pede Passagem (1972), for Odeon. I could not check the reason why this album was not a commercial success by its release time, Elza Pede Passagem is very representative and one of the best albums recorded by Elza Soares in the 70's, being also considered a classic samba-soul record. A big orchestra having the legendary Dom Salvador in charge of arrangements in all tracks accompanies Elza. Personnel is not listed. Esse disco é simplemente incrível. Zecalouro, você já considerou usar outro site pra arquivar, o Rapid Share é muito, mas muito ruim mesmo e o material que vocês tem é maravilhoso.

Vamos lá. Tenho um cuidado até exagerado com detalhes, alinhamentos, padrões, performance e outras coisas mais que somadas fazem diferença no conjunto de uma obra.
Eu não estaria com minha opção inabalada pelo Rapidshare sem uma razão forte e a razão é uma só, ele é disparado o melhor, diria até que é duas vezes melhor que a soma do segundo e terceiro colocado.
O critério de avaliação é apenas a qualidade e disponibilidade do serviço. Não tenho nenhum tipo de relacionamento comercial com essa empresa.

A propósito, dos clássicos da Elza (período Odeon), estão faltando no Loronix "Na Roda do Samba" (1964), Sambas e Mais Sambas" (1970) e "Aquarela Brasileira" (1973). "Elza, Carnaval & Samba" (1969) continua disponível nas boas lojas do ramo.
