Thelma Soares, Thelma, back to Loronix with her first US release, kindly provided by Caetano Rodrigues. The first Thelma LP is already here and the feedback was great. Let's see what happens with this one. Meet, Thelma - The Haunting New Voice From Brazil (N/A), for Columbia, a record that I could not identify the exactly release date and probably is uncertain for many.

By the time of Thelma first release at Loronix, her debut LP with the participation of Vinicius de Moraes, some friends thought that this LP was an international release with the same tracks, actually this is different and I invite you to check how it is.

Tracks include:

01 - Samba do Carioca
02 - Samba de Uma Nota Só
03 - Corcovado
04 - Camará
05 - Chega de Mentira
06 - Garota de Ipanema
07 - Desafinado
08 - Deus Brasileiro
09 - Samba de Roda da Bahia
10 - Deixa
11 - Insensatez

This is another one sent by a friend that I could not give the attention needed. This friend is not a Loronixer, so I have been postponing this LP for months. In fact, the new try I gave to it last week was born by the several wonderful orchestra LPs sent by Caetano Rodrigues in the last two months. Thanks to Caetano Rodrigues, zecalouro hears is now well trained to Orchestras.

This is Jean Kelson e Sua Orquestra - Berimbau & Bigorrilho (1964), for Copacabana, really nice piece of instrumental orchestra album with a proposition to blend orchestra arrangements with two peculiar percussion instruments, berimbau and bigorrilho. Nice idea, but the outcome is something close to bossa jazz with brass with foreground, mainly trombones.

Several doubts I have about this record should be solved with personnel listing, which I have been trying to track down with no success.

Tracks include:

01 - Berimbau (Baden Powell / Vinicius de Moraes)
02 - Samba de Negro (Roberto Corrêa / Sylvio Son)
03 - Catolé (Murillo Latini / Bob Nelson)
04 - Munganga (Jean Kelson / Almeida Rego)
05 - Agô Agô (Milton Castro / Glória Felipe)
06 - Vou Pra Senzala (Milton Castro / Aloísio Santana)
07 - Bigorrilho (Sebastião Gomes / Paquito / Romeu Gentil)
08 - Saci Pererê (Rildo Hora / Marcos André)
09 - Vamos Bigorrilhar (Roberto Corrêa / Sylvio Son)
10 - Dança do Bigorrilho (Astor Silva / Othon Russo)
11 - Jogado Fora (João Mello)
12 - Na Base do Bigorrilho (Alcyr Pires Vermelho / Nazareno de Brito)

Do you make the scans of each album? I see that the back cover of most of them are grey and dark, when we could expect a white surface like the originals. This problem is easily fixed before the scan is done, adjusting the controls to have more or less bright, contrast, etc.

All the best for 2007.
Daniel

zecalouro on Wednesday, 03 January, 2007
Hello Daniel,
Some scans are already available and some others I make. The problem with the scan is that... I don't have a scanner, I use to take pictures from covers with a digital camera.
The use of image processing is also a nightmare, I do not have any idea on how to use Photoshop, actually, a Photoshop for Dummies book comes handy.

The program I use to improve the images is Irfanview. If you have some hint of a better freeware program and some guidelines on how to make the background of back covers a plain white, I appreciate.
Cheers, zecalouro

Lovely, we have here a tiny little piece of record provided by Mr. W. with several nice surprises and curiosities that you would like very much. Actually, Arara Azul sent also a Carmen Miranda LP as zecalouro Christmas gift, but it is a complex post that I'm saving for later. Thanks Mr. W. Thanks Arara Azul.

This is Ann Sothern, Jane Powell, Carmen Miranda and Danny Scholl - Nancy Goes to Rio (1950) - 10", for MGM, released in Brazil as Romance Carioca. Can you believe that? It is true, this LP has also the participation of O Bando da Lua and landmarks the first international performance of the Brazilian genre Baiao with the song Caroom Pa Pa.

Mr. W. gave all details, saying also that a special attention should be given to the song IPSE-AI-O, a Samba, composed by Ray Gilbert, featuring O Bando da Lua. Another track to be highlighted is Love Is Like This, performed by Jane Powell, which is in fact Carinhoso (Pixinguinha) with English lyrics by Ray Gilbert. Breathtaking, short and amazing, don't miss it.

Tracks include:

01 - Love Is Like This - Jane Powell - (Gilbert-Vianna)
02 - Time and Time Again - Ann Sothern and Danny Scholl - (Brent-Spielman)
03 - YIPSEE-I-0 - Carmen Miranda - (Gilbert)

04 - Magic Is The Moonlight - Jane Powell and Ann Sothern - (Pasquale-Grever)

A friend of us shouted yesterday for this artist and I decided to give a try, being amazed since then with this LP, personnel and production. I think it is reasonable to say that Arnoldo Medeiros is more a poetry than an singer or musician, he started his career in the 60's, taking part on several different Festivais da Cancao throughout this decade and since then, being recorded by many renowned artists, such as: Doris Monteiro, Leny Andrade, Erlon Chaves, Taiguara and Many others.

Arnoldo Medeiros released only one LP and that is what zecalouro wants to show you, Arnoldo Medeiros - O Homem, O Poeta (1975), for RCA Camdem, featuring a top-notch personnel listing, highlighted bellow with tracks.

My good friend Arnoldo lived and worked in Washington for many years for the World Bank. He gave me my copy of this great album without realising how incredibly rare it is.
In recent years Arnoldo returned to music and to composing with his original partner Dom Salvador.
In the last couple of years, he has retired to Brasilia with his wife but he still looks pretty much the same as on this record sleeve!

Hello, Good night! What a wonderful night, everybody is happy with the celebrations of the New Years Eve. The streets are full; the supermarket is insane with everybody buying industrial amounts of alcoholic beverages. Fireworks pop once in a while, what a wonderful time. If you live in the 12th floor you must be experienced, it’s exactly the distance that fireworks explode when launched from the ground. It is time to take care while eating, using knifes, shaving; the World War III can enter your home in a flash. Take care, man!

Nothing better than noise to combat noise, if you are planning to make a party to enter 2007 kicking around the floor, do not miss Carnaval RCA (1963) a few posts ago and do not stay away from Mr. Samba - Mr. Samba e Seus "Skindos" Ritmicos (1962), for RGE. Mr. Samba is an obscure group that released two LPs for RGE in the early 60's with great swinging, arrangements and an unknown personnel listing. The first release is their second LP, already available at Loronix. In spite it is a perfect LP for dancing on New Years Eve we have a nice album here.

Tracks include:

01 - Não Ponha a Mão (Bucy Moreira / Arnô Canegal / Mutt)
02 - Enlouqueci (Luis Soberano / Waldomiro Pereira / João Sales)
03 - Tema Para Dedé (Nelsinho)
04 - Onde Estão os Tamborins (Pedro Caetano)
05 - Não Me Diga Adeus (Paquito / Luis Soberano / João Correia da Silva)
06 - Se Eu Morrer Amanhã (Garcia Júnior / Jorge Martins)
07 - Está Chegando a Hora (Rubens Campos / Henricão)
08 - Pourquoi (Nega Sem Sandália) (Jadir de Castro / Caco Velho)
09 - Eu Chorarei Amanhã (Raul Sampaio / Ivo Santos)
10 - Samba Triste (Baden Powell / Billy Blanco)
11 - Quero Morrer no Carnaval (Luis Antônio / Eurico Campos)
12 - Mal de Amor (Raul Sampaio / Benil Santos)

I have been punishing myself since I got recommendations of nice Loronix friends to focus on Sebastiao Tapajos, the Brazilian violonista (acoustic guitar) player with more than 50 recorded albums. I don't know who blame for this fault (the fact zecalouro never took Sebastiao Tapajos for a try), but hearing Sebastiao Tapajos LPs for the first time is such like receiving a new bike from daddy.

Let's start with Sebastiao Tapajos with style, this is Zimbo Trio & Sebastiao Tapajos - Zimbo Convida Sebastiao Tapajos (1981), for Clam, really nice release, I have been hearing this LP every day and on each new try there are new treasures to discover. Another self-explanatory release.

Tracks include:

01 - Danca (Luiz Chaves)
02 - Voce Nao Pode Ouricar (Alexandre Dantas do Amaral)
03 - Marajo (Sebastiao Tapajos / Rubens Barsotti)
04 - Preludio para Karen (Sebastiao Tapajos / Mauricio Einhorn)
05 - Um Pro Zimbo (Sebastiao Tapajos / Mauricio Einhorn)
06 - Recado pro Tiao Tapajos (Luiz Chaves)
07 - Lua Joa (Sebastiao Tapajos)
08 - No Balanco do Vovo (Luiz Chaves)
09 - Igarapes (Sebastiao Tapajos / Mauricio Einhorn)
10 - Viajeiro (Luiz Chaves)
11 - Sincopando (Sebastiao Tapajos / Luiz Chaves / Amilton Godoy)

Miles Davis - POP, New Directions in Music by Miles Davis (1973)

.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 23 de dezembro 2006.

Um verdadeiro Presente de Natal.

Here we have a record that it is really out of Loronix style, but it is close to Christmas and it is a zecalouro's mother advice. I found this more than a few months ago at home, since then, zecalouro's mother keeps saying that I need to put this record at Loronix, she says that I use to hear to it several times when I was a kid, so it should be good to Loronix, etc. You known these things.

Mom's advice could never be ignored, so let's see what happens. This is Miles Davis - POP, New Directions in Music by Miles Davis (1973), for Columbia, the Brazilian issue of a Miles Davis record that I could never associate with the USA release, featuring Hermeto Pascoal, Airto Moreira, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. The participation of Hermeto Pascoal and Airto Moreira was important to make my decision to post this experimental LP, just a few songs and some long tracks with improvisations.

I don't know why zecalouro's mon likes this record. Perhaps she is celebrating the fact that I did not go nuts hearing this melting pot of crazy sounds. Who knows... Anyway, I hope you like it. This is a once in a lifetime release at Loronix, Christmas time...

Tracks include seven Miles Davis compositions:

01 - Little Church
02 - Miles Runs the Voodoo Down
03 - John McLaughlin
04 - On The Corner
05 - Sanctuary
06 - Black Satin
07 - Selim

"Little Church" is a Hermeto composition. This is a wonderful thing - Miles Davis, very much a genius, taking note of the great Hermeto. Airto has some great Miles stories from his brief time with him. This album was culled together from various recording dates and do not all have Airto and Hermeto. Too bad this union did not yield more recordings.

Hideste on Sunday, 24 December, 2006
I look this record more like a compilation ("coletânea", in Brazil) from varios recording sessions than a brazilian version for a USA LP.
I'm curious to check if Little Church is the same as appears in "Live Evil".
Cheers !

sareston on Monday, 25 December, 2006
mkail, there is another Hermeto composition in Live Evil, called Nem Um Talvez. It´s too bad they coundn´t do any other recordings together.. Just before Miles passed away, they were talking about recording an entire album together... Hermeto dedicated 2 songs to Miles, one is called "Pra Miles" that has never been recorded in studio, but has many live versions around the web. The other one is called "Capelinha e Lembranças" from Hermeto´s album "Eu e Eles". It starts with Little Church (Capelinha) with Hermeto playing four Flugelhorns and continues to the other section (lembranças). I think you guys would really like both of these songs!!!

sareston on Monday, 25 December, 2006
In fact, one of the tracks in this album, "Selim" is actually called "Nem Um Talvez".

Lasse Nikkarev on Monday, 25 December, 2006
And "Complete Jack Johnson Sessions" has even more Hermeto compositions. One called Little High People, 2 versions, composed by Hermeto but without his instrumental involvement.

Anonymous on Tuesday, 26 December, 2006
Have you ever saw that the music "Selim" is Miles from back to front.

A big kiss to zécalouro's mom for
her advise. You don't known why she insisted on it?
I tell you
1. Because this is great music
2. Because Hermetão is on it
3, Because she (zecalouro's mom) has really diged it!
Thanks Mon!

Hello, Good Night! Eliana Pittman seems to be a legend outside Brazil; every friend I speak about her always gives nice feedback of her singing and beauty. This release is from a very early Eliana Pittman, not that early as the previous one with her stepfather Booker, this is her second or third solo release.

We are having a boom of Bossa Nova LPs recorded by artist outside Brazil. These releases are extremely successful, it seems that everybody likes it a lot. Yesterday, we had a Mr. G. contribution that had a great acceptance, Christiane Legrand - Of Smiles and Tears (1971), I invite you to try it, just a few posts bellow.

Let's see what happens with this one, a contribution of Phil Musical, the Mighty Blog owner of Phil Musical Lounge. Thanks Phil, it is an honor to receive such beautiful record. Let's thanks Phil visiting Phil Musical's Lounge, here.

This is Michel Magne y Su Gran Orquestra - Las Mas Celebres Melodias de Brasil (1971), for Musidisc Spain. Phil, I will need your help for additional information on Michel Magne and also Musidisc activities in Spain. It seems to me that Musidisc Brasil did not release this record down here. Hi, you can find Maysa singing one of the Michel Magne compositions in the bossa-brasileira.blogspot. He was a composer, arranger and conductor . The song Cent Mille chansons is from the film by Roger Vadim Le Repos du Guerrier, with Brigitte Bardot. All I know about Musidisc is that was a subsidiary of Musidisc France, with lots of accordeon records (Aimable et son Orchestre, etc)

Perhaps this Christmas, I will try to make some research on Brazilian orchestras from the 50's and 60's held by recording companies, such as Orquestra RGE, Orquestra RCA Victor, etc. It is amazing that record labels kept their own orchestras to serve the maestro under contract. Additional details about this subject are greatly appreciated, specially these RCA and RGE Orquestras.

Naturally, we have another Orchestra LP to show, by the way, another wonderful Caetano Rodrigues release. This is Orquestra RCA Victor - Estereo-Samba (1961), for RCA Victor. This was the second album released by RCA Victor using Stereo Technology. You will find enclosed the back cover, with detailed information about the "new" system.

There was a time, exactly before knowing this blog, that Brazilian music was only Carmem Miranda, now I know that it is just the best music in the world.
Thanks gentleman.
