Laurindo Almeida and Charlie Byrd – Brazilian Soul (1981)

Although zecalouro lives around guitars and basses, it is a false statement to say that zecalouro he is a musician. If you are beginning your career as a musician, take care of records like this Brazilian Soul, with Laurindo Almeida and Charlie Byrd (1981).

Stay away if you don’t want to listen to music that your will never be good enough to reach their level of playing, big issue for zecalouro.

Run to the cashier if you are confident and want to listen to something that will be your reference for many years.

Brazilian Soul is the first release out of 4 between Laurindo Almeida and the legendary Charlie Byrd, making a quartet on this one with Bob Magnusson (bass) and Milt Holland (percussion). There are nice melodies and high quality guitar techniques that should be rewarding for musician and fans.

The set is full of Bossa Nova classics from Jobim and Brazilian classical pieces. The song Don’t Cry for me Argentina closes the set and seems to be out of place, but works fine.

This is Laurindo Almeida and Charlie Byrd – Brazilian Soul (1981) for Concord Picante

Tracklist:

1. Carioca (Ernesto Nazareth)
2. Naquele Tempo (Alfredo Vianna)
3. Cochichando (Alfredo Vianna)
4. Luperce (Luperce Miranda)
5. Famoso (Ernesto Nazareth)
6. Choro II
7. Brazilian Soul
8. Stone Flower (Antonio Carlos Jobim)
9. For Jeff (Charlie Byrd)
10. Don't Cry for Me Argentina (from "Evita") (Tim Rice / Andrew Lloyd Webber)

Hello, good evening! I am very happy to update Loronix after four days, which is the largest hiatus since Loronix creation two years ago.

I hope you missed myself and new music such as I did. There were four days, but seems to be four years, in the third night I had a dream I was in the middle of amazing blog posts. Anyway, I will need some adaptation time until getting the old pace, and this is the reason why I’m making this really nice record in the hope you don’t read me, kindly sent and strongly recommended by Jorge Mello. Let’s see.

This is Laurindo Almeida e Ray Turner – Impressoes do Brasil (1957), for Capitol, featuring Laurindo Almeida guitar and Ray Turner piano performing a Brazilian repertoire with selected cuts from Radames Gnattali, Heitor Villa Lobos, Laurindo Almeida and the legendary Garoto. Maestro Radames Gnattali has the whole side A, the only side the unknown Ray Turner plays, while side B features two Laurindo Almeida compositions, one Villa Lobos choro and three Garoto tunes performed by Laurindo, which are the ones that I like most and worth the entire album. Thanks Jorge Mello for this first out of several unknown Laurindo Almeida LPs.

Tracks include:

01 – Allegro – Concertino Nr. 2 para Violao e Piano (Radamés Gnattali)
02 – Adagio – Concertino Nr. 2 para Violao e Piano (Radamés Gnattali)
03 – Presto – Concertino Nr. 2 para Violao e Piano (Radamés Gnattali)
04 – Saudade (Radamés Gnattali)
05 – Choro Triste (Garoto)
06 – Choro Gracioso (Garoto)
07 – Nosso Choro (Garoto)
08 – Serenata (Laurindo Almeida)
09 – Crepúsculo Em Copacabana (Laurindo Almeida)
10 – Gavotta-choro (Villa-Lobos)

Quando adolescente comprei um LP chamado “The Spanish Guitars of Laurindo Almeida”. Adorei.

Today is a special date to the American pianist George Shearing, he is completing today his 88th birthday. George Shearing started playing piano at the age of three, having one of the longest, most prolific recording careers in Jazz history.

This is George Shearing – Shearing Bossa Nova (1962), for Capitol Records, featuring arrangements by Clare Fischer. I’m also making available a music video recorded in 1957 featuring one of the several George Shearing combos with a very young Toots Thielemans on acoustic guitar. Let’s celebrate George Shearing.

Tracks include:

01 – One Note Samba
02 – Blue Prelude
03 – Desafinado
04 – Nevermore
05 – Butterfly Samba
06 – Pensative Woman
07 – O Green Dolphin Street

Marvelous. Today is my birthday & someone at work told me that I shared the same birthdate as Mr Shearing. Pretty cool…I thought.
Then I thought wouldn’t it be even cooler if Zeca posted Shearing’s “Bossa Nova” LP today in his honor?
Well, I just got home from dinner with my girlfriend & found that you actually posted it! Wow!
Thanks for making this birthday extra special for me with this wonderful gift. I have been dying to hear this LP for some time.
You are the best!

Can’t thank you enough for posting this album! When I first started collecting Lounge about fifteen years ago, one of the albums that got me interested in the genre was George Shearing’s “Black Satin, White Satin” CD and I’ve loved all his work ever since. But here in my part of the world, Southeast Michigan, USA, this album simply isn’t to be found. I learned of its existence five years ago and have looked for it ever since. Now you’ve made my day! Nice clean vinyl copy too. Thanks again!

Thank you!
I am a collector of Clare Fischer and this one ranks at the top of my list of all time Clare Fischer arrangements!
Can anyone supply musician credits? I have searched the web and can’t find anything.
The only guitar solo is on ‘Come Rain Or Come Shine’ – it sounds like Joe Pass or perhaps a restrained Luiz Bonfa.

With a bit more research and listening, I will venture the guess that the guitarist is actually Laurindo de Almeida.
My reasoning:
1. The final track, ‘Amazona’s Legend’ is Laurindo’s composition
2. There is a bit of a guitar solo on this track that sounds like Laurindo
3. Why else would George Shearing include a song by a relatively obscure composer?
4. Laurindo sits stylistically, very close to Bonfa and can solo well enough on jazz standards like ‘Come Rain Or Come Shine’
5. Laurindo was a ‘West Coast’ jazz guy in 1962, just like Clare Fischer – this is an LA session, I think.
6. The style here is a bit more authentically ‘Brazilian’ to my ear than Joe Pass was ever capable of, in spite of the many nylon string ‘Bossa Nova’ recordings he made. American jazz guitarists usually learn Bossa Nova rhythms fairly well but don’t play the bolero quite as well as we hear here on ‘Blue Prelude’.

I’m proud to say that when Shearing first came to Brasil, in 1979, it was a trio with an Irishman – the great guitarist, Louis Stewart – as well as bassist Brian Torff.
Louis made many friends, particularly Mauricio Einhorn and Sabastio Tapajos, and also tells a great story of meeting Luiz Eca, and then introducing Shearing to Luizino and them playing piano duets into the night in Copacabana.
Louis has subsequently made some great records of Brasillian songs, especially “The Dolphin”… those interested can check Louis on YouTube, there’s some great stuff there (he’s our greatest musician in Ireland).
If anyone has any recordings (or memories) of that Shearing Trio tour in 1979 (or did they do a TV spot ?) I’d love to hear from YOU!
Many thanks, so, in advance,
RED (Ireland).
PS.: Definitley Almeida on guitar on this great record, and the bassist is Jimmy Bond. These Clare Fischer charts are pure genius… I’m also aware that Shearing is a great fan of Manfredo Fest…

Stan Getz – Stan Getz with Guest Artist Laurindo Almeida (1963)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 21 de abril 2007.

Caetano sent this album as part of his latest package of treasures to Loronixers and I need to say open and honestly it was the first time I had the chance to hear this classical record.

Among the several things I could learn with Loronix, a important one is to consider Stan Getz as a Brazilian artist, such tremendous was his dedication to Brazilian music and the work he made to “announce” the great new from Brazil in the early 60′s, the Bossa Nova.

This is Stan Getz – Stan Getz with Guest Artist Laurindo Almeida (1963), for Verve. This is a really amazing album and I think I cannot make better than Richard Ginell from All Music to describe this session and what was in the air during those years.

Personnel includes another surprise, Edison Machado on Drums.

AMG Review:

Three weeks after completing his meeting with Luiz Bonfá and only two days after the epochal Getz/Gilberto sessions, Stan Getz was back in the studio recording more bossa nova. Producer Creed Taylor was obviously striking while the iron was hot, getting in as many Brazilian sessions as he could, yet the quality of the music-making remained consistently marvelous.

Continuing his practice of running through one star guitarist after another, this time Getz has Laurindo Almeida as the designated rhythm man, featured composer, and solo foil. The rhythm section is an authentically swinging mixture of American sidemen (including Steve Kuhn on piano and George Duvivier on bass) and Brazilian percussionists. Almeida didn’t like to improvise, so his solos stay close to the tunes, inflected with a perfectly matched feeling for the groove along with classical poise. Jobim’s “Outra Vez” is a particularly lovely example of Getz’s freedom and effortless lyricism contrasted against Almeida’s anchored embroidering.

Sessions like these might have been seen as cashing in on the boom at the time, yet in the long view, one should be thankful that these musicians were recording so much cherishable material.

Cooool! I love this version of Outra Vez. To me, Getz & Jobim are two sides of the same coin: seemingly simple, however deeply profound.
I recommend Viva Bossa Nova & Ole Bossa Nova, 2 more albums where Almeida plays with American musicians. His A Man and A Woman LP is pretty great as well.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful music.

Maria Lúcia Godoy – Maria Lúcia Godoy Interpreta Villa Lobos (1977)

I’m sure that Maria Lucia Godoy has several admirers at Loronix, and I feel really glad about it, from a rather unknown to a very requested artist by many friends.

It is not easy to find her albums and I was even satisfied with the two previous we made at Loronix. This third one, with Maria Lucia Godoy performing Villa Lobos at his 90th anniversary is a real find, she is truly gorgeous in this session and is backed by Sergio Abreu, a Brazilian guitarist, brother of Eduardo Abreu from the legendary and acclaimed Duo Abreu.
Let’s see.

This is Maria Lucia Godoy – Maria Lucia Godoy Interpreta Villa Lobos (1977), for Philips, featuring an orchestra of cellos on tracks 01 to 05 conducted by Alceo Bocchino and the guitar and arrangements of Sergio Abreu on tracks 06 to 11. I’m making available a music video with Duo Abreu performing a Domenico Scarlatti Sonata, K.141 in 1974. Duo Abreu was internationally acclaimed, but had a short career. Sergio Abreu is now an international highly praised luthier since he left his career as musician in the beginning of the 80′s.
Stay with Maria Lucia Godoy and do not miss Duo Abreu music video, perhaps their only known video performance.

Tracks include:

01 – ”Bachianas Brasileiras Nº 5” Ária (Cantilena) (Villa-Lobos / Ruth Valadares Correia) Dança (Martelo) (Villa-Lobos / Manuel Bandeira)
02 – Na Paz do Outono (Villa-Lobos / Ronald de Carvalho)
03 – Lundu da Marquesa de Santos (Villa-Lobos / Viriato Correia)
04 – Desejo (Villa-Lobos / Guilherme de Almeida)
05 – Cantiga do Viúvo (Villa-Lobos / Carlos Drummond de Andrade)
06 – Canção do Amor (De ”Floresta do Amazonas”) (Villa-Lobos / Dora Vasconcelos)
07 – Cantilena (O Rei Mandou Me Chamar) (Villa-Lobos)
08 – Modinha (Villa-Lobos)
09 – Remeiro de São Francisco (Villa-Lobos)
10 – Canção do Poeta do Século XVIII (Villa-Lobos / Alfredo Ferreira)
11 – ”Suíte” A Menina e a Canção (Villa-Lobos) Quero Ser Alegre (Villa-Lobos) Sertaneja (Villa-Lobos)

Maria Lucia Godoy – O Canto da Amazônia (1969) with Neco

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 26 de agosto 2007.

I was reluctant to make this post today; something on my mind was saying to leave it for another day. Then I started wondering about waking up late on Sunday and start the day on a slow manner hearing this fantastic music. This was enough to make me confident to show this album to Loronixers as the last post of today.

This is not popular music, it is classical music, but it is so beautiful that you should make a try. Perhaps O Canto da Amazonia never had a CD reissue and I’m really glad to find this album, listed as one of the 100 Brazilian essential records at Luiz Americo website.

This is Maria Lucia Godoy – O Canto da Amazonia (1969), for Museu da Imagem e do Som, recorded to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Manaus city, Amazonas state, featuring the classical singer Maria Lucia Godoy, the guitar of Neco and arrangements of Maestro Guerra Peixe. O Canto da Amazonia has also another very important Brazilian artist, the composer Waldemar Henrique, a very important artist to Amazon region by his musical translations of the Amazon legends and myths, such as: Matintaperera, Uirapuru, Curipira, among others. Waldermar Henrique is in charge of most of Side B compositions of O Canto da Amazonia.
Maria Lucia Godoy is a great surprise. I think she brings all the birds from Amazon on her singing, being also in charge of a great accomplishment, the repertoire selection. Neco proves to be a real nice musician with his guitar being heard in all tracks. A small ensemble of clarinet, flute and cello was also in this great session. I urge Loronixers to feedback this release, which is dedicated to the great Amazon region and a very good Loronix friend from Canada.

Tracks include:

Personnel:

Maria Lucia Godoy

Odete Dias Ernest

Roman, this is a great release. I know that track 08 is louder, but this is exactly as the album is. I decided to leave it as is.

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 17de setembro 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Since the Brazilian classical singer Maria Lucia Godoy was introduced to Loronixers with O Canto da Amazonia, a tribute to Amazon Rainforest recorded in 1969, I have been receiving emails and comments requesting more music from Maria Lucia Godoy. I thought it would not be easy to find another album, but lucky has been on my side, for the happiness of our community.

This is Maria Lucia Godoy – Maria Lucia Godoy Canta Poemas de Manuel Bandeira (1968), for MIS, a tribute to Manuel Bandeira (* 1886 + 1968), a renowned writer, considered by many as the best Brazilian poet of the last century. Manuel Bandeira released more than 20 books

of poetry, translated to several languages.
Maria Lucia Godoy is backed Murillo Santos at the piano and was once again in charge of repertoire selection, featuring Manuel Bandeira poems with music by Heitor Villa Lobos, Jaime Ovalle, Francisco Mignone, Gianfrancesco Guarnieri, Lorenzo Fernandes, Jose Siqueira and Edino Krieger. She did it again, this is a very beautiful album that has something very important in common with O Canto da Amazonia; both are all about Brazil, from the start until the end.

Tracks include:

01 – Dança do Martelo (Manuel Bandeira / Villa-Lobos)
02 – Modinha (Manuel Bandeira / Villa-Lobos)
03 – O Anjo da Guarda (Manuel Bandeira / Villa-Lobos)
04 – Azulão (Manuel Bandeira / Jaime Ovalle)
05 – Modinha (Manuel Bandeira / Jaime Ovalle)
06 – Dona Janaina (Manuel Bandeira / Francisco Mignone)
07 – Pousa a Mão na Minha Testa (Manuel Bandeira / Francisco Mignone)
08 – O Menino Dorme (Manuel Bandeira / Francisco Mignone)
09 – Impossível Carinho (Manuel Bandeira / Gianfrancesco Guarnieri)
10 – Canção do Mar (Manuel Bandeira / Lorenzo Fernandez)
11 – Madrigal (Manuel Bandeira / José Siqueira)
12 – Desafio (Manuel Bandeira / Edino Krieger)

Obrigado.
pawlyshyn, I hear track 08 and you are right, there is a skip. I will make a reposting of this track tomorrow. Thanks.
Helio, tudo bem?

Abraços e keep up the good work.
