Here we go on another essential record for any series Brazilian popular music collector, a really different album, taking in consideration the music we are used to hear at Loronix. Nilo Amaro e Seus Cantores de Ebano is a Brazilian vocal group that introduced with this first album, Os Anjos Cantam, several new elements to Brazilian music, such like the spirituals and gospel. Their repertoire features several styles, such as: Samba, Blues, Dorival Caymmi and international standards, a unique experience. Let’s see.

This is Nilo Amaro e Seus Cantores de Ebano – Os Anjos Cantam (1962), for Odeon, featuring a fascinating vocal group assembled by a mezzo soprano, a contralto, two bass, one tenor and three baritones. Unfortunately, I do not have the names of each group member, with the exception of Nilo Amaro and Noriel Vilela, a well-known artist by Loronixers that has a beautiful, strong and unique voice. My highlight goes to 01 – Leva Eu Sodade, 05 – Down by the Riverside and 07 – A Lenda do Abaete, but all tracks are solid, providing together a delightful listening experience.

Tracks include:

01 – Leva Eu Sôdade (Tito Neto / Alventino Cavalcanti)
02 – Boa Noite (Francisco J. Silva / Isa M. da Silva)
03 – Fiz a Cama na Varanda (Dilú Mello / Ovídio Chaves)
04 – Canção de Ninar Meu Bem (Bidú Reis / Gracindo Jr.)
05 – Down By The Riverside (D. Jordan)
06 – Greenfields (Gilkyson / Deher / Miller / Vrs. Romeo Nunes)
07 – A Lenda do Abaeté (Dorival Caymmi)
08 – Azulão (Jaime Ovalle / Manuel Bandeira)
09 – Eu e Você (Roberto Muniz / Jairo Aguiar)
10 – Minha Graúna (Tito Neto / Avarese)
11 – Dorinha (Tito Neto / Ari Monteiro)
12 – A Noiva (La Novia) (J. Prieto / Vrs. Fred Jorge)

All I can say is, wow, who knew? This reminds me a little of the Cuban doo-wop group, Los Zafiros.
There’s an article on the album on Luiz Américo’s list of 100 Fundamental MPB albums:

He mentions the soloists for each track — besides Nilo Amaro and Noriel Arantes, there is also Nilson Prado.
