Silvio Cesar - Silvio Cesar (1983)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 30 de janeiro 2007.

When deciding the posts of the day, in the beginning of the night, or with Caetano Rodrigues after 8 PM (most cases), it is very important to keep in mind some pitfalls, you cannot post four instrumental albums on a single day, or two female singers together and many other different criteria you have to manage. This is the reason some friends get mad when I meant to do something and the outcome is completely different. Caetano is an example, we just finished a phone call with a plan and now I'm here - ten minutes later - showing something different to Loronixers. I hope you trust me on my selections.

This is Silvio Cesar - Silvio Cesar (1983), for Independente Musica, which is probably the record with the greatest personnel list ever at Loronix, featuring Geraldo Vespar, Sergio Carvalho, Wilson das Neves, Chico Batera, Rafael Rabello, Orlann Divo, Hermeto Pascoal and others. Full personnel listing is provided with the music. Special attention to the autograph on cover.

Tracks include:

01 - Cantar (Silvio César / José Roberto Bertrami)
02 - Companheiro (Silvio César / João Nogueira) with João Nogueira
03 - Passado e Futuro (Silvio César)
04 - Chorinho Pra Ele (Hermeto Pascoal / Silvio César) with Hermeto Pascoal
05 - E Agora (O Que Faço Pra Esquecer ) (Silvio César)
06 - Renascer (Silvio César)
07 - Se Você Fosse Um Homem (Silvio César) with MPB-4
08 - Loucura e Razão (Silvio César) with Jane Duboc e Grupo Aquarius
09 - A Mais Antiga Profissão (Silvio César)
10 - Primavera / Outono (Sergio Carvalho / Silvio César)

Many friends were asking for another post of Trio Esperanca. I have to admit that I'm not a fan of Trio Esperanca and I don't have also any of their records. Thanks to Jean-Yves (Jean do Trombone) for sending it, now I can please my friends. Actually, the first Trio Esperanca at Loronix was great and this one should also.

This is Trio Esperanca - Trio Esperanca (1975), for Odeon, featuring Mário, Regina e Marizinha. Evinha was also member of Trio Esperanca and it is not part of this formation, I think she left the Trio in the late 60's. I don't know. Anyway, I'm willing to learn more about Trio Esperanca, so send me a feedback of this record at comments session, please.

Tracks include:

01 - Quem Tá Com Samba (Roberto Corrêa / Jon Lemos)
02 - Ilusão de Mais Um Carnaval (Roberto Corrêa / Jon Lemos / Paulo Debétio)
03 - Marambaia (Henricão / Rubens Campos)
04 - Chuva (Paulinho da Viola)
05 - Ponto Final (Hugo Belardi)
06 - Quantas Lágrimas (Manacéa)
07 - Tem Pena (Dominguinhos / Anastácia)
08 - Eu Quero Um Xamêgo (Dominguinhos / Anastácia)
09 - Chuva de Verão (Roberto Corrêa / Jon Lemos)
10 - Modo Mudado (Zé Maria / Robson)
11 - Refúgio (Belizário / Diferraz)
12 - Coqueiro de Amaralina (Donaldson Gonçalves / Regina Correia)

Thanks Jean-Yves for Trio Esperanca - Trio Esperanca (1975), at Loronix, here.

Hope uEnjoy!

Ipanema Pop Orchestra - Bossa Nova Meets USA (1965)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 30 de janeiro 2007.

I received two emails asking why Elizeth Cardoso, Zimbo Trio and Jacob do Bandolim LP is divided in four different files, the reason is quite simple, it is a double LP and was record with the always requested 320Kbps. That's why it was splitted on that way. This should not be a barrier to listen to that legendary record that really worth the download with four parts.

Anyway, remember the first Ipanema Pop Orchestra LP released with the help of Caetano Rodrigues? I'm sure that everybody remembers, it was very successful, featuring three Brazilian arrangers, Luiz Eça, Eumir Deodato and Maestro Cipo. They are now back, with different arrangers and the same concept.

This is Ipanema Pop Orchestra - Bossa Nova Meets USA (1965), for London, featuring the Brazilian arrangers Cipo, J.T. Meirelles and K-Ximbinho, one of my favorite artists that unfortunately released a few records, all very hard to find. It is late at night down here and I do not want to get much of your attention this time, stay with Bossa Nova Meets USA.

Tracks include:

01 - Charade (Henry Mancini / Mercer) arrangements: Cipo
02 - Tonight (L. Bernstein / S. Sondheim) arrangements: J.T. Meirelles
03 - Witchcraft (C. Coleman / C. Leigh) arrangements: Cipo
04 - Tender Is The Night (S. Fain / Paul Francis Webster) arrangements: Cipo
05 - Call Me Irresponsible (S. Cahn / J. V. Heusen) arrangements: Cipo
06 - I Let My Heart In San Francisco (D. Cross / G. Cory) arrangements: Cipo
07 - I Could Have Danced All Night (F. Loewe / A. J. Lerner) arrangements: Cipo
08 - Moon River (Henry Mancini / Mercer) arrangements: Cipo
09 - All The Way (S. Cahn / J. V. Heusen) arrangements: Cipo
10 - It Had Better Be Tonight (Henry Mancini / Mercer) arrangements: J.T. Meirelles
11 - Days Of Wine And Roses (Henry Mancini / Mercer) arrangements: K-Ximbinho
12 - Hello Dolly (J. Herman) arrangements: K-Ximbinho

Hello, Good Night! I had a meeting today at Rio de Janeiro, downtown area and this time I was really convinced that going back home after meeting end should be the best idea. I was wrong. Although my mind was really decided to go back home a strange force, such like a tractor ray, pushed my body in the direction of Emporio do Disco at Rua Goncalves Dias. I could only understand what happened in the two hours out of my consciousness later on having a snack and figuring out why my fingers were so dirty. Loronixers will appreciate it. The fishing was amazing.

This is Juarez - Sax Maravilha Sambas (1976), for CID. I'm very happy with this record, but very disappointed to do not have the original issue with the amazing cover you can see at your left eye. The record name was changed to Saxsambando in its 1983 re-issue, for the same CID, and the cover artwork is not inspiring as the original one. Anyway, it is a Juarez LP; to please Loronixers and make our friends Caetano Rodrigues, bossanovadreamer and Jean Yves hit the ceiling. The repertoire is popular, based on 70's radio hits.

Tracks include:

01 - Argumento (Paulinho da Viola) -- Leonel / Leonor (Wilson Moreira / Nei Lopes) - Mestre Sala dos Mares(João Bosco / Aldir Blanc)
02 - Moro Onde Não Mora Ninguém (Agepê / Canário) -- Tô Chegando Já Cheguei (Picolino da Portela / Caipira) -- Quantas Lágrimas (Manacéa)
03 - O Ouro e a Madeira (Ederaldo Gentil)
04 - Pôxa (Gilson de Souza)
05 - Saudades da República (Artulio Reis)
06 - Os Meninos da Mangueira (Rildo Hora / Sergio Cabral)
07 - Aquarela Brasileira (Silas de Oliveira)
08 - Na Beira do Mar (Gracia do Salgueiro) -- O Mar Serenou (Candeia)
09 - Moça (Wando)
10 - Se Não For Amor (Benito di Paula)
11 - Brasil Pandeiro (Assis Valente)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 27 de janeiro 2007.

Mr. D&C will be pleased with this post. Since the fist list sent to zecalouro, Mr. D&C had this LP listed. I'm happy to have it now to Mr. D&C and Loronixers, it was part of another of those nice opportunities at the old vinyl shops in Rio.

This is Conjunto Balambossa - Poema do Adeus (no date), for Coledisc. Another Conjunto Balanbossa LP was released last year. I remember that I said that sometimes the record companies uses to create bands or groups just to make specific releases. I think this is also the case, this LP is different from that one and seems to be played by different musicians. Let's see what happens.

Tracks include:

01 - Na Cadência do Samba (Ataulfo Alves / Paulo Gesta)
02 - Chora Tua Tristeza (Oscar Castro Neves / Luvercy Fiorini)
03 - Nós e o Mar (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
04 - Se Você Disser Que Sim (Luis Bandeira)
05 - Tamanco no Samba (Orlann Divo / Hélton Menezes)
06 - Quem Manda na Minha Vida (Herivelto Martins / Raul Sampaio)
07 - Poema do Adeus (Luis Antônio)
08 - Samba da Madrugada (Dora Lopes / Carminha Mascarenhas / Herotides)
09 - Corcovado (Tom Jobim)
10 - Gamação (João Roberto Kelly)
11 - Palhaçada (Haroldo Barbosa / Luis Reis)
12 - Volta Por Cima (Paulo Vanzolini)

Phil Woods & Irio de Paula - Encontro (on Jobim) (2001)

Caetano knows the business, I felt in love by this record since the first hearing. This is one of the 7 albums recorded by Phil Woods in a five days period in Italy, 2001. When I read about it, thought that this record would be a minor working on Phil Woods career. As usual, another great mistake of mine. It is a masterpiece. It was record as a duo with another great and very underrated Brazilian artist, Irio de Paula.

This is Phil Woods & Irio de Paula - Encontro (on Jobim) (2001), for Philology (Italy). This album landmark the first time he has played clarinet exclusively throughout a session. If you want to know more, Phil Wood was not familiar with the works of the Brazilian guitarist Irio de Paula prior the first day of recording, which should be a single day of recording since Phil recorded 7 albums in 5 days. Great record, very hard to find, released in Italy on a very limited edition. And it is all about Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Tracks include:

01 - Eu Sei que Vou te Amar
02 - Samba do Aviao
03 - O Grande Amor
04 - Corcovado
05 - A Felicidade
06 - Brigas Nunca Mais
07 - Retrato em Branco e Preto
08 - Ana Luisa
09 - Days of Wine and Roses
10 - Autumn Leaves

Jazz fans know Phil Woods. He has been a major contributor playing with almost every big name in modern jazz.
His primary instrument is the sax and sometimes he plays with what may be best described (to me) as a "hard edge". Sometimes some of the be-bop phrases get a little to edgy for me.
However, on this album he plays only clarinet. Soft, melodic and absolutely beautiful. This is a lovely album. Another one of those that you want to kick back with that great drink (forget the name) made with limes and watch the Copacabana sunset.

Anonymous on Thursday, 01 February, 2007
By the way, Phil Woods also did the famous sax solo on Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are"
What a wonderful album - just clarinet and guitar! I wish it would go on forever - Charlie

Homenagem a Antonio Carlos Jobim - Instrumental 2

I spoke with Caetano and hour ago by phone and I'm happy with that phone call, it was useful to remember this record, we simply forgot it among several options we had to make this tribute. I would be very disappointed if I did not remember this album, a truly awe RGE compilation of instrumental Jobim songs played by the Bossa Nova Trios, Combos and artists that we love together at Loronix. Let's see why it should be so disappointing if I have missed it.

This is Homenagem a Antonio Carlos Jobim - Instrumental 2 (no date), for RGE, featuring Paulinho Nogueira, Raul Mascarenhas, Zimbo Trio, Pedrinho Mattar, Quarteto Bossamba, Dick Farney, Raul de Souza, Som Tres, Os Intocaveis and Breno Sauer Quinteto. I spoke with Caetano about this record and he said that some tracks were only released by RGE in single or EP, so I think this LP be a great excitement to Loronixers.

Tracks include:

01 - Corcovado - Paulinho Nogueira
02 - Wave - Raul Mascarenhas
03 - Garota de Ipanema - Zimbo Trio
04 - Desafinado - Pedrinho Mattar
05 - Vivo Sonhando - Quarteto Bossamba
06 - Se Todos Fossem Iguais a Voce - Dick Farney
07 - Anos Dourados - Raul de Souza
08 - So Saudade - Quarteto Bossamba
09 - O Morro Nao Tem Vez - Som Tres
10 - Samba do Aviao - Os Intocaveis
11 - So Tinha de Ser Com Voce - Zimbo Trio
12 - Meditacao - Dick Farney
13 - Luciana - Breno Sauer Quinteto
14 - Chega de Saudade - Pedrinho Mattar

The tracks listed as played by "Quarteto Bossamba" are actually played by Walter Wanderley, double tracked on both piano and organ. I recognized both arrangements immediately as I have them on his albums. If you doubt he is on the piano, listen carefully and you will hear the Hammond B3 organ playing also.

This is the great close of the first day of 48 Hours of Tom Jobim tribute. I hope you have enjoyed, just as I had a tremendous pleasure on making it with Caetano Rodrigues assistance. The idea was to show several different aspects of Antonio Carlos Jobim music, being of use for those who never had the chance to hear Jobim music and also for fans with unique Jobim's LP. Tomorrow we will have our second and last day, completely different from the first one. I will appreciate a lot if you provide feedback on this tribute, so we can make better plans for the remaining tributes that will be scheduled throughout 2007. Thanks!

This is The Adventurers - Original Sound Track (1970), for Paramount. The film is known as bellow standard, but the great highlight is the sound track with music by Antonio Carlos Jobim. A very hard to find LP sent by Caetano to our tribute.

The Adventurers landmarks the first recording of two important Jobim songs, Children's Game, changed to Chovendo na Roseira when got lyrics of Jobim and Dax & Amparo (Love Theme), changed to Olha Maria when lyrics from Vinicius de Moraes and Chico Buarque de Hollanda created the lyrics. The Adventurers is arranged and conducted by Eumir Deodato.

Tracks include:

01 - Main Title
02 - Children's Games
03 - Rome Montage
04 - Bolero
05 - Dax Rides
06 - Dax & Amparo (Love Theme)
07 - Corteguay (Deodato)
08 - The Long Trek
09 - Search For Amparo
10 - That Old Black Magic (Mercer/Arlen)
11 - Bitter Victory
12 - A Bed Of Flowers For Sue Ann

Some people say that this movie is horrible. I never seen it. But the soundtrack is marvelous, historical, as you said. Presenting some Jobim classics for the first time. Good job Caetano and Zeca...

I find it interesting that most movie books (Like Maltin) rate this movie as a "bomb". This happens to be one of our favorite movies. If you get a chance to see it be sure you do. We have this film in our VHS library and have watched it many times over the years.
Having the score is another thing. One more piece of music from Jobim is marvelous.
Thanks for all this wonderful Jobim, Zeca.

Pekis on Thursday, 25 January, 2007
Hello, Thanks a lot for this OST !
I think the track listing was erroneous
(I think you must add "12-El Lobo's Band" and move "12-A Bed of Flowers for Sue Ann" to track 13)

Then here is what I propose:

01 Main Title 2'33
02 Children's Games 1'49
03 Rome Montage 2'52
04 Bolero 1'49
05 Dax Rides 1'38
06 Dax & Amparo (Love Theme) 3'28
07 Corteguay 2'24
08 The Long Trek 3'29
09 Search For Amparo 3'16
10 That Old Black Magic 1'02
11 Bitter Victory 1'49
12 El Lobo's Band 2'03
13 A Bed Of Flowers For Sue Ann 1'06

But, never mind, all the 13 files are there in the zipped file, knowing that track 01 are 02 have been glued.

So you must rename the file

"01-Main Title" as "01-Main Title / 02-Children's Games"
"02-Children's Games" as "03-Rome Montage"
...

"11-Bitter Victory" as "12-El Lobo's Band"
"12-A Bed of Flowers for Sue Ann" as "13-A Bed of Flowers for Sue Ann"
I hope I didn't do mistakes myself :) ... Thanks a lot for your fantastic blog !

This tribute has been a great idea. It makes those two days a very special time to remember this incredible artist who composed and interpreted this music that makes us to have so intense moments.
I am very grateful to your effort, Caetano and Zeca, in doing this "memento". I support the idea that those great artists who constantly are found in the pages of Loronix, have their tribute day. The celebration of their birthday or the date when they passed away could be the best moment, in a similar way you have made with Jobim. They deserve it.
I suggest the next one would be Vinicius de Moraes. His birthday is on 19th of October (he would turn 94 this year), and he passed away 27 years ago on the 9th of July. There is not a "special" date like Jobim (90 years) but you can think about my suggestion. And, of course, next year will be the 50th aniversary of birth of Bossa Nova ...
Thank you, Caetano and Zeca. You are great.

I'm so glad to be able to hear this Adventurers LP at last. It was one of the few items in the Jobim discography that I hadn't yet found (the only other that comes to mind is "The Little Prince"). The others offered here in the tribute (Orfeu da Conceicao, Manfredo Fest, Salena Jones, etc) are things I have on CD, but it's great to see them receiving more attention. The Carnegie Hall video was good to see again. Many thanks for this tribute to the great Jobim.
I want to also thank Pekis for the information concerning the mixed up tracks. Well done, Pekis, it would have taken me a long time to sort those tracks out. I had this problem with a few other items (Guio de Morais LP and the Sambaloucos LP) about a week ago and reported it to zeca. I hope that this "bug" will not be too difficult to fix.

Fuzzy Bear on Thursday, 25 January, 2007
Great idea!
Some great records like “Tom Canta Vinicius” and “Salena Jones sings Jobim with the Jobim's“. A significant one “Orfeu da Conceicao” from 1956.
Side by side with the schmaltz of Doris Day and the unnecessary tribute from 1997.
I would like to hear more live albums and rarities…
And thanks for the consistently posting superb music!
Obrigado,
Fuzzy Bear

The singer is Roger "Chappo" Chapman. Lead singer in a band called "Family". Don't know the song's title though.

Obrigado e me desculpe a forma como o Loronix acabou.

Zeca, é a unica coisa que eu desejo para voce;

I had the chance to hear this LP for the first time yesterday; I did not know what I was missing. I decided to post this album as the second of our tribute to show how this record surprises me. I don't know details of Manfredo Fest biography and his association to the works of Antonio Carlos Jobim, but the first thing that came on my mind yesterday was that I had in hands a sincere and emotive tribute to Tom Jobim made by a fan, a sincere admirer of the Maestro, so great is the repertoire and so wonderful is the interpretation and details on each song. Thanks for this LP Caetano, truly amazing.

This is Manfredo Fest - Just Jobim (1998), for DMP. On top of everything I said before, this is the last Manfredo Fest LP. I use to never put my personal opinion on records at Loronix and I will make an exception this time, run for it. Period. Some tracks are not well known Jobim works and belongs to a movie soundtrack that you will hear about today, stay tuned.

Tracks include:
Personnel

Manfredo Fest
(piano)

David Finck
(bass)

Cyro Baptista
(percussion)

Steve Davis
(drums)

Track List

01 - Aguas de Marco
02 - Wave
03 - Desafinado

Hi Zeca,
thank you for this Manfredo Fest album.
I would also like to hear Manfredo Fest e seu Conjunto "Evolucao" 1965(RGE XRLP-5.239)
Perhaps you or Caetano have this album too?

Great idea!
Some great records like “Tom Canta Vinicius” and “Salena Jones sings Jobim with the Jobim's“.
A significant one “Orfeu da Conceicao” from 1956.
Side by side with the schmaltz of Doris Day and the unnecessary tribute from 1997.
If you can, I would like to hear more live albums and rarities…
And thanks for the consistently posting superb music!
Obrigado,
Fuzzy Bear

M. Fest: I wonder - really really pray for! - any of the great Manfredo Fest albums for Concord Records in California, of the '80s and '90s. Unbelievably they're out of print. Anybody...?
RED (Ireland).
PS.: Also, Zecalouro, when I wrote to your g-mail a few weeks ago, it was just to introduce myself, and tell you of my deep gratitude to you personally, and of how everything has changed in my habits since I discovered (with JimR's help!) Loronix!

I was planning to close the day with something different that I could decide together with Caetano, but we used a criteria that was not confirmed when I took the original choice for a hearing, that's why I'm making this pick, which is a record that was sent a long time ago by Cesar Saldanha that has just made a strong contribution a couple of days ago that will please everybody. Thanks Cesar for this LP and also for your "secret" contribution to Loronixers. I'm sure that we cannot go wrong with this pick, also a recommendation of Mr. D&C.

This is Luiz Bonfa - Black Orpheus Impressions (1968), for Dot Records/RGE USA. Cesar uses to make a nice work from start to end with his contributions and sent the complete personnel listing to this record, which includes Maria Helena Toledo vocals. The cover artwork disturbs me a little bit and as every Luiz Bonfa album, different covers artwork from reissues were also not inspiring.

Tracks include:

Personnel:

Luiz Bonfá
(guitar and vocal)

Eumir Deodato
(piano and organ)

Ron Carter
(bass)

Dom Um Romao
(drums)

Marvin Stamn
(trumpet)

Maria Helena Toledo
(vocal)

Track List

01 - Dreamy (Luis Bonfá / Simon / Maria Helena Toledo)
02 - Capoeira (Eumir Deodato)
03 - Night Waltz (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo)
04 - Song Of The Hills (Luis Bonfá)
05 - Manhã de Carnaval (Luis Bonfá / Antônio Maria) with Maria Helena Toledo
06 - Samba de Orfeu (Luis Bonfá)
07 - Dois Amores (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo) with Maria Helena Toledo
08 - Na Paz do Amor (Luis Bonfá / Maria Helena Toledo)
09 - Rancho de Orfeu (Luis Bonfá)
10 - Rio With Love (Luis Bonfá)
11 - Bahia Soul (Luis Bonfá)

Beautiful! Bonfa in a fuller sound setting. Exquisite arrangements. I always wondered what the original version of "Dreamy" by Astrud sounded like.
Thanks Zeca & Cesar

Thanks zecalouro for this "new" Bonfà! And do not forget to revise the former release of Bonfà at Loronix:
Luiz Bonfa - Luiz Bonfa (1955) 10" Luiz Bonfa debut LP

There were some errors in it and you promised to fix them :)
Thank you in advance.
