Neyde Fraga - Mais Balanço com Neyde Fraga (1965)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 09 de maio 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

This is the second album at Loronix by this Brazilian female singer that I like very much. The first one was recorded with Walter Wanderley, her husband at that time. Neyde Fraga has one of the most swinging voices I have ever heard on a female singer and this album is so good as the other one with Walter Wanderley. Let's see how Loronixers feedback this one.

Martoni:

This is Neyde Fraga - Mais Balanço com Neyde Fraga (1965), for Continental, an contagious samba album with a swingy big band orchestra and arrangements shared by Erlon Chaves and Francisco de Moraes. Actually each one is in charge of six arrangements as indicated at track list. Neyde Fraga recorded several 78 rpm, some singles, EPs, three LPs and for reasons that I don't know she stop her career after releasing this album. The third Neyde Fraga LP is a 10-inch format, released in 1957 for Odeon. I'm tracking down this one and any hint is really appreciated.

Tracks include:

01 - Samba Jazz (Ely Silva / Meneguim Júnior) Erlon Chaves
02 - Gente (Marcos Valle / Paulo Sergio Valle) Francisco de Moraes
03 - Dor de Separar (Hilton Accioli / Roberto Luna) Erlon Chaves
04 - Miss Biquini (Sylvio Mazzuca / Zuleika Amaral) Francisco de Moraes
05 - Só Deus e Eu (Jorge Costa / Sebastião da Silveira) Erlon Chaves
06 - Mar Amar (Roberto Menescal / Ronaldo Bôscoli)
Francisco de Moraes
07 - Balançafro (Luis Bandeira)
Francisco de Moraes
08 - Posto Seis (Zé Keti / José Ari)
Erlon Chaves
09 - Arrastão (Edu Lobo / Vinicius de Moraes)
Francisco de Moraes
10 - Onda Quebrando (Zil Rosendo)
Erlon Chaves
11 - Barquinho Diferente (Sergio Augusto)
Francisco de Moraes
12 - Vá Ser Feliz (Geraldo Vandré)
Erlon Chaves

I'm not aware that this singer was ever married to Walter Wanderley, I don't believe this to be correct. The only singer I know he was married to was Isaura Garcia.

Good Night Gentleman!
Zecalouro is with this album under his wing for weeks using Google several times per day on a never-ending quest to find additional information.

The quest is over, unsuccessfully over. Lazy green bird.
He just wants to say that this LP from 1964 – Balançando, with Walter Wanderley and Neyde Fraga is very good. Maybe Walter is the only organist zecalouro knowns that can make a crowd dance using only an old organ.

Neyde Fraga is also surprising.

This is:Neyde Fraga - Neyde Fraga com Walter Wanderley e seu Conjunto – Balançando (1964) for Philips.

The green bird is absolutely right!
Walter Wanderley, as you said, consegue fazer groove apenas com um órgão velho. One more great choice – a rare gem – from loronix to us.
Enjoy this good one and be happy!
Grande, Lôro, grande! Abração e obrigado. Tô na área!

Felipe,
Sensacional. Continue assim que vamos longe.

PS. You would probably laugh at this, but they call it a “heatwave” on the local weather report and there has been temperatures as “high” as chocking 25 degrees Celsius today!

Aloysio de Oliveira – Cantem Conosco (1960)

Hello, Good Night! I said earlier that we would have something different at Loronix today, some posts will released with homage to what is known in Brazil as O Dia do Musico – the day of the musician, November 22nd, today!
I want to present an album from a key Brazilian music artist that is not common associated as a musician, but as the executive director of Odeon and then the owner of the legendary record label Elenco.

This is Aloysio de Oliveira – Cantem Conosco com o Coro Odeon (1960), for Odeon. My best pick would be a early Aloysio record with o Bando da Lua, unfortunately, I could not find it.

Today is a perfect day for this release, Aloysio de Oliveira was very important to the music that we like most and we are used to see at Loronix, he was responsible for the launching of many artists, such as: Alaíde Costa, Silvinha Telles, Sérgio Ricardo, and many others.

Stay with tracks and a link to Aloysio de Oliveira AMG Bio.

Luiz Eça & Maria Petersen – Encontro Marcado (1992)

.
.
Originalmente postado no Loronix em 22 de agosto 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

This repost is been worked since 28th May 2007.
Shame it on zecalouro, he took three months to realize that Caetano Rodrigues could send it to us, as he did.
The repost idea started with a request from a Loronix friend who lives in Paris, France. I don’t know if I can mention his name, but he did a nice work to track down this album, even making email contact with Maria Hiort Petersen. Unfortunately, we did not exchange emails since then and I think he will be surprised with this reposting.

Encontro Marcado features Luiz Eça and Maria Petersen, in my humble opinion, one of the best Luiz Eca albums. The first version had a low bit-rate and eleven tracks, running time of 46 minutes. Caetano sent the CD version with extras, three additional tracks with running time of 67 minutes. It is a mandatory repost, now with highest bit rate and alternative FLAC files. I recommend.

This is Luiz Eca & Maria Petersen – Encontro Marcado (1992), for Line Records, recorded live at Au Bar, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Rio de Janeiro with musical direction of Durval Ferreira and arrangements by Luiz Eca.

Maria Petersen is a Danish singer and this is her first album. Luiz Eca piano can be heard in all tracks and Maria Petersen beautiful singing accompanies Luiz Eca piano in 9 tracks. Our very good friend from Paris said Maria Petersen recorded more albums before Encontro Marcado, most of them dedicated to Brazilian music. I think it is really worth to track them down.

Tracks include:

01 – Minha – Luiz Eca
02 – Chuva – Luiz Eca & Maria Petersen
03 – Brigas Nunca Mais – Luiz Eca & Maria Petersen
04 – Corcovado – Luiz Eca
05 – Imagem – Luiz Eca & Maria Petersen
06 – Summer of 42 – Luiz Eca
07 – Manha – Luiz Eca & Maria Petersen
08 – Insensatez – Luiz Eca
09 – Dolphin – Luiz Eca & Maria Petersen
10 – Meditacao – Luiz Eca
11 – Marina – Luiz Eca & Maria Petersen
12 – Stormy Weather – Luiz Eca & Maria Petersen
13 – Manha de Carnaval – Luiz Eca & Maria Petersen
14 – The Man I Love – Luiz Eca & Maria Petersen

This is a very rare recording with a limited amount of Lps pressed. I was at the recording session. It was done 2 or 3 years before Luiz passed. Maria had been living in Rio (where this was done) but shortly after it came out returned to Denmark where she’s still singing and recording. I love the “naturalness” of this recording. Good job, Zeca!

Varios Artistas - Hits da Bossa Nova (n° 1) (1963)

This is the first out of five records released by Philips between 1963 and 1964 with the "hits" from the artists of the Philips cast. What a cast! Hits da Bossa Nova is probably one of the best compilations I have ever seen. In spite of the nice repertoire selection, Hits da Bossa Nova features tracks never released on regular recordings, providing a guaranteed entertainment for starters and experienced collectors.

If you are new to Bossa Nova, you should take it.

This is Hits da Bossa Nova (1963), for Philips, featuring Tamba Trio, Sylvia Telles, Sonia Delfino, Carlos Lyra, Baden Powell, Lucio Alves and Sergio Mendes.
You cannot go wrong with such selection.

Tracks include:

Performers

Tamba Trio
Sylvia Telles
Sonia Delfino
Carlos Lyra
Baden Powell
Lucio Alves
Sergio Mendes

Track List:

01 - Samba de Uma Nota Só – SYLVIA TELLES
02 - Desafinado – TAMBA TRIO
03 - Meditação – SONIA DELFINO
04 - Outra Vez – SERGIO MENDES

07 - Samba Triste – LUCIO ALVES
08 - Nós e o Mar – TAMBA TRIO
09 - O Amor e a Rosa – LUCIO ALVES

Hi Zeca,
I checked all the tracks on this record. All but two came from well kown Philips LP`s by these artists (Lyra`s "Quem quiser encontrar o amor" comes from his "Depois do Carnaval" LP). "Desafinado" by Tamba Trio comes not from one of their early LP`s, this must be a track from a single. "O Barquinho" by Sonia Delfino is not on her Philips album "Canta para a Mocidade", perhaps also a single- track.
Hits da Bossa Nova Vol.2 has two tracks by Luiz Henrique which are not from his Philips LP but from an early EP-Single. Unfortunaly my copy of this Lp is very scratchy. I hope you will get it with better quality.

Thanks Frank-oliver,
I really thought this Lyra track was never issued on any media.
Don't be afraid about this copy, I found it on a very good condition.
Cheers, zeca

I'm recording Hits da Bossa Nova 2 at the moment - the vinyl looks to be in excellent condition, sadly when I've played it there are a few clicks and pops.
I'll send it your way as soon as possible Zeca but I fear the clicks might be a bit too much.

Hello, Good Evening! There is a great excitement around a vinyl fair in Sao Paulo scheduled for tomorrow. I will spread my wings and fly away there just to check with Caetano what is new. Actually, we will really check what is old, what is new does not apply to this business. It will be amazing to meet Loronixers, I will be with Caetano, so it will be easy to realize who is zeca, otherwise, look for a green guy, naked, 15cm tall and barefoot with four fingers, two in the front and two in the back. That's zeca. I'm tired today and I need to start easy and great.

This is Varios Artistas - Hits da Bossa Nova - Nr. 3 (1964), for Philips. We had already a very successful Hits da Bossa Nova Philips compilation at Loronix, Number 1 was very well received by Loronixers. Originalmente postado no Loronix em 07 de abril 2007.
Comentários originais incluídos.

Hello, Good Evening! I was checking the last five days and without knowing all first posts made were from obscure artists and the hard to find albums.
This time I decided to make a test drive with some Loronixers that are also vinyl collectors and none of the friends had seen this group and this album before. Let's keep the pace and show Loronixers another Marcelo "Sambasonics" Munhoz contribution that probably you never heard about.

This is Samba 5 - Moderninho (1970), for Tropicana. Little is known about Samba 5, probably a quintet that released only this LP for the label Tropicana. Personnel is also unknown and it seems to be recorded by known musicians, the drummer plays very nice and the record was mixed to highlight his work. Thanks for another one, Marcelo.

Marcia Calmon:

Tranka Oliveira
Sax e arranjos

Totó
baixo

Jota Jr.
piano

Írio de Paula
guitarra

Tatá
bateria

Tracks include:

01 - Wave (Tom Jobim)
02 - Januária (Chico Buarque)
03 - Aos Pés da Cruz (Marino Pinto / Zé da Silva)
04 - Mudando de Conversa (Hermínio Bello de Carvalho / Maurício Tapajós)
05 - Você Passa Eu Acho Graça (Ataulfo Alves / Carlos Imperial)
06 - Keep Talking (Donato / Crystal)
07 - Bom Tempo (Chico Buarque)
08 - Lapinha (Baden Powell / Paulo César Pinheiro)
09 - Pra Machucar Meu Coração (Ary Barroso)
10 - Sá Marina (Antônio Adolfo / Tibério Gaspar)
11 - Roda (Gilberto Gil / João Augusto)
12 - Bye Bye (Carlos Imperial / Jorge Roberto)

Conjunto de Jazz Bossa Nova – Brasil Bossa Nova (1963)

.

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 03 de Janeiro 2008.
Comentários originais incluídos.

I thought I knew everything about Bossa Nova discography after managing Loronix albums for more than a year. Unfortunately, when you have a collector such like Caetano Rodrigues on your side, it is silly to think you know everything. Caetano has a strange relationship with his collection, he loves his albums, keeping everything organized by sections in his place, which is such like a record store of our dreams, but he thinks that everybody has the music he only has. I got amazed with this album, which I did not have idea that exists, and Caetano got amazed to know that I don’t have it.

You will understand what I’m saying with the last post tonight, which will be one of the greatest albums available at Loronix, and in spite of Caetano thinks that everybody has it, I’m quite sure that nobody had the chance to know. Such like this one.

This is Conjunto de Jazz Bossa Nova – Brasil Bossa Nova (1963), for RCA Victor, featuring a quintet of bass, flute, violao, drums, sax and trombone. Personnel listing is partially identified and Caetano should be pleased if our community identifies the remaining musicians.

Brasil Bossa Nova is a great Samba Jazz session, so far one of the greatest releases in the style at Loronix. Thanks Caetano.

Orquestra Armorial de Camera – Gavião (1976)

Originalmente postado no Loronix em 06 de dezembro 2007.

A very good friend recently recommended this orchestra and I cannot believe that I could live without. Orquestra Armorial de Camara was nested inside Movimento Armorial, created at Northeast region by Ariano Suassuna and Cussy de Almeida, which is the leader of Orquestra Armorial.

The movement was created with the orchestra in 1970 and Continental recorded the first album in 1975. Orquestra Armorial is acclaimed worldwide and it is very connected with the Northeast culture and something really unique, different from everything that you heard before at Loronix. Let’s see.

This is Orquestra Armorial de Camera – Gaviao (1976), for Continental, the third out of four albums released in a short period of five years, from 1975 to 1979. I’m really excited with this album and I could not make a satisfactory research on the orchestra and Cussy de Almeida. This should not be a major concern since Loronixers are invited to append additional information at comments section.

This is fantastic! I have been looking for this album in a digital format for over twenty years. I received this album along with two other Orquestra Armorial de Camera albums as part of a São Paulo Rotary Club anniversary package when I was an exchange student. I loved the music, but ultimately wore out the poor grade vinyl. I hope you have access to the other discs in this series. Kepp those flac files coming! Thanks.

Pedrinho Mattar - Um Show de Mattar (1971)

This album was on my wanting list for another purpose, to address a request of Juliana, a personal friend that is absolutely crazy for Pedrinho Mattar in all phases. I finally got it this week and decided to hear before giving it to her. That's the story behind this post, Juliana agreed to show it to Loronixers and said to mention her name. Thanks Juliana!

This is Pedrinho Mattar - Um Show de Mattar (1971), for Copacabana, featuring Mauricio Einhorn (harmonica), Tita (vocal on track 03), Coral de Joab, Pedrinho Mattar (piano) and Moacyr Silva as producer and coordinator. Um Show de Mattar is a transitional album between the Samba Jazz works from the 60's and the piano virtuoso years, it is easy to identify both phases throughout the tracks. Mauricio Einhorn delivers a solid harmonica playing, especially on track 02 - Conversa de Botequim.

Tracks include:

01 - Darling Lili (J. Mercer / Henry Mancini)
02 - Conversa de Botequim (Noel Rosa / Vadico)
03 - Nirvana (Tita) with TITA
04 - Tu Mi Delirio (C. Portillo de La Luz)
05 - Sex-appeal (Fred Falcão / Arnoldo Medeiros)
06 - What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life (Michel Legrand / A. Bergman / M. Bergman)
07 - Tenebroso (Ernesto Nazareth)
08 - Anônimo Veneziano (S. Cipriani)
09 - Depois do Carnaval (Marilena Amaral / Sebastião Tapajós)
10 - Theme From Love Story (F. Lai / C. Sigman)
11 - Lúcia Esparadrapo (Antônio Carlos Marques / Jocafi / I. Tavares)
12 - Vim (Eduardo Souto Neto / Sergio Bittencourt)

"It has been my desire to create a new sound which people will want to hear over and over, a sound which they will be able to understand immediately and to which they will be unable to resist dancing – with or without partner" writes renowned Jazz guitarist Barney Kessel (1921–2004) himself in the liner notes of his album Bossa Nova, released in 1961 on Reprise Records.

Stan Kenton - Artistry in Bossa Nova (1963)

.
Saudades de Carlos Braga
.

Stan Kenton

CB

STAN KENTON

Stanley Newcomb Kenton (December 15, 1911 – August 25, 1979) was a pianist who led a highly innovative, influential, and often controversial American jazz orchestra. Stan Kenton was born in Wichita, Kansas, and raised first in Colorado and then in California. He learned piano as a child, and while still a teenager toured with various bands. In June 1941 he formed his own band, which developed into one of the best-known West Coast ensembles of the Forties. Kenton played in the 1930's in the dance bands of Vido Musso and Gus Arnheim, but his natural inclination was as a band leader. As a competent pianist, influenced by Earl Hines, Kenton was much more important in the early days as an arranger and inspiration for his loyal sidemen. Its soloists during the war years included Art Pepper, briefly Stan Getz, altoist Boots Mussulli, and singer Anita O'Day. By 1945 the band had evolved quite a bit.
Pete Rugolo became the chief arranger (extending Kenton's ideas), Bob Cooper and Vido Musso offered very different tenor styles, and June Christy was Kenton's new singer; her hits (including "Tampico" and "Across the Alley From the Alamo") made it possible for Kenton to finance his more ambitious projects. A popular recording of "Laura" was made, the theme song from the film Laura (starring actress Gene Tierney), and featured the voices of the band. Calling his music "progressive jazz," Kenton sought to lead a concert orchestra as opposed to a dance band at a time when most big bands were starting to break up. In 1949 Kenton took a year off. In 1950 he put together his most advanced band, the 39-piece Innovations in Modern Music Orchestra that included 16 strings, a woodwind section, and two French horns. Its music ranged from the unique and very dense modern classical charts of Bob Graettinger to works that somehow swung despite the weight. Such major players as Maynard Ferguson (whose high-note acrobatics set new standards), Shorty Rogers, Milt Bernhart, John Graas, Art Pepper, Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Laurindo Almeida, Shelly Manne, and June Christy were part of this remarkable project, but from a commercial standpoint, it was really impossible. Kenton managed two tours during 1950-1951 but soon reverted to his usual 19-piece lineup.

Then quite unexpectedly, Kenton went through a swinging period. The charts of such arrangers as Shorty Rogers, Gerry Mulligan, Lennie Niehaus, Marty Paich, Johnny Richards, and particularly Bill Holman and Bill Russo began to dominate the repertoire. Such talented players (in addition to the ones already named) as Lee Konitz, Conte Candoli, Sal Salvador, Stan Levey, Frank Rosolino, Richie Kamuca, Zoot Sims, Sam Noto, Bill Perkins, Charlie Mariano, Mel Lewis, Pete Candoli, Lucky Thompson, Carl Fontana, Pepper Adams, and Jack Sheldon made strong contributions. The music was never predictable and could get quite bombastic, but it managed to swing while still keeping the Kenton sound.

Kenton's last successful experiment was his mellophonium band of 1960-1963. Despite the difficulties in keeping the four mellophoniums (Gene Roland, Joe Burnett, Bill Horan and Tom Wirtel et al. which formed their own separate section) in tune, this particular Kenton orchestra had its exciting moments.
Kenton was a salient figure on the American musical scene and made an indelible mark on the arranged type of big band jazz. Kenton's music evolved with the times throughout the 1960s and 70s. He promoted jazz and jazz improvisation through his service as an educator. The "Kenton Style" continues to permeate big bands at the high school and collegiate level, and the framework he designed for the "jazz clinic" is still widely in use today. His music has experienced a resurgence in interest, with later critical "rediscovery" of his music and many reissues of his recordings. Kenton continued leading and touring with his big band up to his final performance in August, 1979, a week before he suffered a stroke while on tour in Reading, PA. Kenton did not recover and passed away on August 25, 1979.

 ALBUM REVIEW
This LP features the Stan Kenton Orchestra (during the period when it had a mellophonium section) performing some of its familiar standards and a few newer songs with a light Brazilian rhythm provided by percussionists Frank Guerrero and Milt Holland (Larry Bunker fills in for Holland on three songs). Although one might consider this project to be an example of Kenton jumping on the bandwagon (since the bossa nova fad was at its peak at the time), the music is quite enjoyable. Kenton on piano is the main soloist throughout, with Conte Candoli having a couple solos on trumpet and high-note trumpeter Bud Brisbois getting a few spots. Kenton's "Brasilia" is a charming piece deserving to be revived. Otherwise, it is interesting to hear such songs as "Interlude," "Concerto to End All Concertos," "Eager Beaver," and even "Artistry in Rhythm" in this setting.

Acontece...

Texto original do Loronix

I can file and track down every request and recommendation made by Loronixers, but seems to be imposible so far to associate the requests with requesters, specially one so hard to track down such as this nice LP with the participation of several Brazilian starts recorded for the label MPS/Basf in 1966, Germany.
The whole story is so far unknow, but this studio record has together on the set Chico Batera, Dom Salvador, Edu Lobo, J.T. Meirelles, Jorge Arena, Rosinha de Valenca, Rubens Bassini and Sylvia Telles. Some websites reports a not credited participation of Baden Powell, which is something to be checked. Who has the whole story about this? If any friend has additional info, please write us on comments. Tracks will be given with detailed participation on each track.

This studio record was produced by Joachim-Ernst Berendt for MPS records in Germany. Berendt handpicked all artists himself in Rio de Janeiro for a tour in Germany and Switzerland. During the tour the album was recorded in Germany. There is also a 50 Minute live footage aired on German TV with the same lineup but different tunes. Baden Powell was not involved in this project. In the 90`s a CD was compiled by Universal Germany with this album and Baden Powell`s “Images on Guitar”
